828  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people in USA fear socialism so much? on: December 07, 2011, 10:07:49 AM
Nothing is 'wrong' with those places. I've enjoyed many of the European countries. 10 years ago, envy, is what most people would have thought because of the 'benefits'. Those are emotional, 'live today' crowd that ignore the fact that somebody always has to pay for those privileges that are given. Socialism is, imo, an idealistic realm that can only exist when resources are abundant.

As to the question, today people in the USA fear socialism because of Europe, sort of, embraced it and went broke. I don't mean to necessarily include all countries in Europe, but it is easier to generalize and get the point across than to list each country.

If a country wants to give a privilege to its citizens by using others money to pay for it though equalizing wealth, so be it. Just so long as they know the consequences. Socialism will never truly exist. Never has never will, unless you can find one of those food and material replicator devices from Star Trek.

But Hey, its just my dumb opinion. No offense.

Hello All,

I see a lot of depression here when you join up at the forum and are restricted to the newbies section. Well anyone that knows me from the IRC channel #bitcoin-otc, where a bot by the name of Gribble (great bot) resides, knows that I every-once in awhile put out a BTC_Challenge. Some are easy, some are hard, and some go unsolved because of a time limit.

Well don't tell anyone... shh... keep it a secret... in this section where all the l33t5 won't come. I will, every-once in awhile, offer the same to you. This is a simple process for FREE BTC. I will pose a problem, either with a time-limit or without one, and the first to post the correct answer will win.

This is the important part: Post your receiving BTC Address with your answers... If you forget, I will pay the first correct answer that has the BTC Receiving address.

OK. For the first BTC_Bear BTC_Challenge.

Many might know that you can see transactions to an address by using blockexplorer.com Well lets do a pretend look up.

You look at : 1QCyFFRxZuzHAPKNQw5gWBzLWnHXNHxi86 and (not for real tho) and find these transactions sent to the address in different blocks at different time intervals.

1.71 BTC, 1.82 BTC, 1.73 BTC, 1.66 BTC, 1.66 BTC, 1.76 BTC, and 1.69 BTC as the transactions to that address. (if it wore possible to do so)

Here is your Question for 1 BTC to the Winner. You will in no doubt know you figured it out when you do,

What do the above transactions represent? First to answer correctly, Wins.

Remember don't tell anyone I'm here  Grin

I will check back later to see who has won, if anybody.

Quote
When Zhoutong states that bitcoinica hedges it's net position on MtGox, what he really means is that the net burden of risk is foisted onto the shoulders of the markets when it is unable to be balanced internally. Essentially, if Zhoutong's clients make large collective mistakes, YOU and ME and anyone else who holds bitcoin will end up paying for these mistakes whether we use the bitcoinica platform or not.

This sounds familiar... oh yea, the Wall Street debacle.

Any Exchange, Broker, Escrow, etc... can take advantage of its customers... Personally, I would be more concerned with the exchanges. Everybody knows what Derivatives are... its gambling... and the House always wins. Now some players by using their wits and skills can narrow or even overtake the odds stacked against them.

Which btw, if Zhoutong is correct that his service accounts for over 1/3 of the trades at MTGOX during peak hours of trading, it would give those people with enough wits, skills, and experience to use that information to their advantage.

When are those peak hours? What are the 'odds'? In which direction would it favor the user to place said bets... I bet someone can find out without to much effort.

Unlike fiat services that do the same thing, BitCoin has a paradigm shift out into the future. At some point, people will realize they don't need the exchanges, brokers, and escrow services. They can do it all themselves. They can trade in person, in the -otc, at the store, and yes even at the Casino. It will be the best of times, It will be the worst of times...

Bitcoinica is going through its growing pains, hopefully it will fair better than MTGOX's growing pains... We all know he had them. Or he might go the way of others and disappear with peoples BitCoins just like some banks are doing.

But all should understand, it is about Trust. Can I trust this person, entity, service, or whatever to do what he says he is going to do. But before we throw Zhoutong under the bus, ask that question about almost any other service you use.

Lets end my diatribe cause it will all even out in the end, when I have all the BitCoins.

BTW: Thanks for the info  Wink

833  Economy / Services / Re: [POLL] Is there a demand for a high-end non-anonymous escrow service? on: December 06, 2011, 10:33:45 PM
Additional services are always welcomed.

I, however, think you have a Catch 22 problem. VIP traders tend to know each other and trust each other, so there would be consequences if the deal was not upheld. Now, if you provided a form of insurance, they might be willing to pay your fees for that insurance. But finding an insurance underwriter for that type of deal, I think would be hard to do.

For the low end traders, it would be great for bringing them on board with confidence of not being scammed. However, you will not be able to charge a large fee to them which would hurt your side.

I think it was Stone that said: "The money is in the meter pull." I think I'm paraphrasing as I did not look it up. But what he was getting at is that it is better to make a $1 from 100 people, than $100 from 1.

The problem with that aspect of doing your type of business is your transparency business model. Once the two parties know each other and the trade goes through without a hitch, they won't need you. If you keep them anonymous to each other, then you would be the counter-party and they would need an escrow with you.

Escrow does have a place however for certain deals, But for most people, they will just use an exchange that they trust and pay the 1% or  less fee.

I would like to try and provide a solution also. IMO, if from some miracle, PayPal allowed you to act as an escrow service to protect them from the chargebacks... Let me know... I'll invest.

Good Luck,
BTC_Bear

Luke-Jr,

DanielDaniel had won a bid on a Item, but was only able to pay 10 BTC of the amount of the winning bid. He had an important party to goto... I agreed to refund his 10 BTC and went to the next highest bidder.

In fairness to DanielDaniel, he did ask if it was alright that it could take 5 minutes to transfer... I said that shouldn't be a problem... the 5 min had elapsed... and the bid on that item released the *Secret Item*  So the pressure was on...

In this case, Transparency is desired, so I will post the PM as 'no' Personal Information is in it.
