861  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: TOR Nodes on: October 13, 2017, 08:41:10 PM
Hello all, thank for your comments. Just a quick update: I dont know if it is because I have a IPv6 or a TOR enabled service but my node just got 1 incoming connection. it gets stuck at 9 connections.
I wonder If there is something I could do.
If having a TOR node is the right path to have a incoming connection enabled node but only permit ONE connection then I think I would rather have a regular node.
The log keeps showing this:

Quote
2017-10-13 19:38:59 connect() to 79.10.132.141:8333 failed after select(): Connection refused (111)
2017-10-13 19:41:16 connect() to 72.48.98.106:8333 failed after select(): Connection refused (111)
2017-10-13 19:41:58 connect() to 217.33.94.163:8333 failed after select(): Connection refused (111)

Don't worry, that is all normal. It is hard to get incoming connections, but eventually they do increase. If you got one, and it is not from some local app and is indeed from Tor, then you should get more then one as well, as time goes by. Look at that incoming connection and if it says "via <your onion address>.onion", and you didn't do it yourself, then there is no reason that others won't connect as well. Just make sure to setup "externalip <onionaddrees>.onion" in bitcoin.conf so you can advertise your onion to the network.

Those failed connections in the log might be outgoing connections (to my understanding your node isn't reachable through IPv4 and only with the hidden service, so it must be, since it wouldn't report IP addresses otherwise). Some nodes just might not like Tor nodes or are more likely just failing due to Tor being a bit slower and less reliable then a direct connection, but you still offer bigger anonymity to the network and as you can see you still get 8 outgoing connections, so it is worth it.

U četvrtak sam u Beogradu, radi li ovaj ATM u Kralja Milana? Kako to funkcioniše?

863  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: So how much privacy do we really need? on: October 13, 2017, 08:14:14 PM
It won't destroy law and order because law and order will destroy (or better shutdown) the exchanges that accept that cryptocurrency first.
Physical evidence is a way to catch a criminal, as long as that evidence exists.
What if that crime was committed in the cyberspace only? Someone could not even touch or physically possess drugs or dirty dollars but still committing crime by exchanging them with that super-anonymous cryptocurrency and then in turn exchanging them with USD (= money laundering).
And I'm not talking about sacrificing democracy or freedom of speech. But these freedoms should be revoked if the line gets crossed (i.e. you act against the other people's interest). And that's when you go to jail.

First of all, government can't shut down all the exchanges, since there are decentralized exchanges, there are even the ones like Bisq that use fiat and are still decentralized. They really have no way of effectively stopping this revolution.

If physical evidence doesn't exist, then how can you be sure that crime even happened. There is a reason why I didn't count any crime that happens in cyberspace, because it isn't a crime in my opinion. You can't get killed or hurt in cyberspace. I think that cyberspace has nothing to do with the law or governments or the rest of the physical world and they shouldn't hold no authority over it. My point is that if no one gets physically hurt, it shouldn't be a crime and if they did, then there is evidence. And if law enforcement can't catch it by using that evidence, nor the evidence they obtain from cyberspace peacefully or anywhere else for that matter, as long as it is a peaceful way of obtaining information, then they shouldn't compromise other peoples privacy or peace just so they can get their job done. Biggest fish already have their ways of anonymity, as we saw in part in Panama papers, this is for the people and they just want to protect their power from the people. It is a biggest trick all regimes use, fear, to make people give them more power then they deserve. Money laundering shouldn't be a crime on it's own, it hurts no one, it is an actual crime they are laundering money from that is a problem and that should be stopped there, as other ways are unjust and ineffective. There will always be ways to easily launder money for big criminals, they are not fighting this battle so they can win or even make a dent in this crime, they are fighting it so they can hold power and have reason to exist and expand and employ more of their own people.

I think that democracy and freedom of speech should never be revoked, whatever you do, you should always be able to say your part of the story and give your opinion, as opinion never hurt anybody. It is just another way to stop people from expressing their opinion about the system, if you take away their right to vote or say how badly they were treated in the system, you can keep doing it and make up crimes for others to shut them up as well. I know you don't want to believe this is happening and it isn't happening in an enormous level at all, and is always decreasing, but it is happening. System is corrupt, everyone can see that. And in such system, even the worst criminals deserve a right to free speech, democracy and anonymity for their opinions.
864  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Questions about running a node on: October 13, 2017, 07:43:46 PM
While Linux is definitely more secure, there really isn't any need to install Windows. For most people, Windows is still more comfortable and easy to use. If you were to ask someone to switch to Linux, the UI and functions would all be vastly different. I don't see a problem as long as you don't run any suspicious apps or go to any random website. If you patch your computer regularly, it would be rather secure, given that Wannacry infections was also due to users not patching their computers.

I would challenge that it is easier for people to use Windows. Every new version of Windows makes users adjust and learn again how to use it and most of the things new versions of Windows implement in their GUI is from Linux distributions. Since Linux distros are usually open source, GUI gets developed by the people, for the people. There is no limitation nor a reason to not have at least one Linux GUI that can be easy for new users to use, just like Windows. And I know that many were developed to look like Windows for people to make a switch, but it proved to be not as important to new users as other advancements that a new different GUI brings. So in short, if there was something good about Windows, Linux would implement it, but if there is something good about Linux, Windows will not implement it is quickly, since they don't make decisions about quality, but what makes them most money. They have a monopoly, so the free market rules don't apply to Windows, but still apply to Linux distros. Windows doesn't have to care about giving better software, they have no competition.

As for the security, there are a lot of 0-days in Windows due to corporate priorities and closed source. And when it comes to Wannacry, a lot of users still use XP, that didn't get the patches as Windows ditched it. You can use Windows very conservatively and still get malware and since you mentioned Wannacry, it is one of the examples. It spread across the LAN network as a worm using exploits discovered by NSA and leaked by ShadowBrokers. The whole structure is broken and hopeless. There shouldn't be a place for closed source software on such a low level like an operating system.

866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: viability of 99% offline clean computer for storage? on: October 13, 2017, 07:17:01 PM
I've read both your comments, thank you, the second one was a little above my head and interest for more speculative alts right now, that is a fully air gapped setup.  Hence the reason I was curious about my initial question.  A PC updated and maybe even using linux and nearly 99% offline for maybe 5 or so alt coin types with lower levels of investment and using only the dev recommended wallets.  Only to be network connected to transact to and from an exchange and off again?  Just wondering if that's a "decent" amount of security assuming I don't mess it up with poor installs.

I can't advise you on keeping the system offline for most of the time, since that means that you won't be having security updates and patches. That works when you have it offline 100% of the time, but if you just pop it online for a short while, it might not even get a chance to catch up before it gets infected with malware. Keeping PC disconnected for most of the time is a two-edged sword, can't tell you with certainty what is safer, but Linux that is often updated should be very secure.
867  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Btc not received i forget to change the address and received on the old one on: October 13, 2017, 04:08:29 PM
To be honest, I can't get this transaction from my own mempool or in blockexplorer.com . I can see from the blockexplorer you provided a link to, that the fee is about 20 satoshis per byte, which is pretty bad. Also it is suspicious that the transaction is only 150 bytes and the addresses start with 3 which means that it is P2SH tx. Is this a segwit transaction, since it is so small,if so, how is it an old address?
868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: It is safe to use virtual machine as a cold storage? on: October 13, 2017, 03:55:16 PM
I see people very often making this confusion. Using virtual machines for safety only works the other way around, you protect your host system from the guest system. So you don't add security to your system by installing a VM, you add to the security by shifting the use of your host system for dangerous operations to the VM, as the VM should keep all the malware in and not let it escape to the host.
869  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to send Bitcoin to an email address on: October 13, 2017, 03:50:37 PM
Bitcoin has nothing to do with email and of course you can't send coins to an email address. Bitcoin is fully decentralized and associating Bitcoin addresses with email addresses would require some form of centralization (which would create a security and privacy risk and completely defeat the purpose and all the benefits of Bitcoin technology in the first place).

So to answer your question, Bitcoin is not PayPal, they are completely on different sides of a spectrum. If you want to have such a feature, you will have to use some centralized service, like someone's website, and fully trust them with those bitcoin's.
870  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Transaction Problems btcdirect to electrum on: October 13, 2017, 03:45:45 PM
You can also try to use CPFP method if the fee is too low for that transaction, since you do own an address to one of it's outputs.
871  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: viability of 99% offline clean computer for storage? on: October 13, 2017, 03:43:49 PM
The thing is that downloading other altcoin wallets could get you malware. If you must have an online (hot) wallet for BTC, then try keeping that PC as secure as possible (the best bet here is to run Linux and only open source software on it, including Bitcoin Core or if you really can't download the whole blockchain then Electrum). You can use that old PC for experimenting with different altcoin wallets, but be careful what you download, there are plenty of high tech malwere out there disguising as a cryptocurrency wallet.

Keep in mind that no matter how fresh/clean your OS installation is and how many antivirus software you run and how rarely you go offline, it will never compete with running Linux and there are no real drawbacks when using it.
872  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Download stuck on: October 13, 2017, 03:37:02 PM
Look at the debug.log in the data directory, it might give you some clues. Are you running WIndows? Do you perhaps have a firewall? Maybe try deleting banlist.dat and peers.dat in the data directory.
873  Economy / Services / Re: ★☆★ 777Coin Signature Campaign ★☆★ (Jr-Hero Accepted) on: October 13, 2017, 12:46:31 PM
Does this apply going forward? As people were expecting to be paid the previous rate for last weeks work.

Is it possible to get an explanation for the two week cycle as well, does that mean we'll be paid for a maximum of 60 posts in that time or only that payment will be made after week two?

Since a second week has already started and people have been making posts already for this one, the most correct thing would be to pay the old rates for both of these weeks. It would make sense to give people at least one week notice anyway when changing rates, especially in this case, as the second week has already started.

875  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What happens to BTC after they're all mined and billionaires own majority btc's? on: October 11, 2017, 09:08:39 PM
Good question.. unfortunately don't think there is a way to tell currently what will happen. I believe another cryptocoin will become superior to BTC eventually just because of its technical limits. There are better alternatives that function much better overall. Another question that remains is will another coin become as well known as bitcoin to the regular public? What coins will make access for a regular person as easy as FIAT is now.. time will tell.

You might be surprised on how many improvements can be done to Bitcoin without creating a new cryptocurrency. Bitcoin was designed with many features in mind that were never deployed due to slow and secure development on Bitcoin. You might notice Bitcoin Core version starting with a zero, which is to indicate that all of this is still just an experimental version. Many other currencies, like Ethereum, has experienced bad transaction scripts that enabled thefts of large amounts of money. Bitcoin is still the most secure network and blockchain to date.

Bitcoin protocol was left with many op codes that were never filled and serve as a placeholder for many features that Bitcoin plans to implement eventually.
Satoshi and the devs didn't just make a first cryptocurrency and leave the job half done. they spent A LOT of time exploring all the possible benefits and applications and features that such technology could bring. But altcoins popped up in hopes of generating revenue when they saw Bitcoin early adopters easily becoming rich, so they rushed to make all the features that Bitcoin didn't have yet due to slow and steady development that focuses on security and stability.
Bitcoin can't run around implementing new feature every month even if it has the most talented and skilled developers of all cryptocurrencies. They have big expectations and a very big responsibility to make a first and best crytpocurrency in the world.
876  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Fixing the value of the dollar on the Blockchain on: October 11, 2017, 08:48:37 PM
This doesn't have much to do with Bitcoin, it is a smart contract on another blockchain that has nothing to do with Bitcoin. So they probably have it somehow defined in this contract a value for an item in dollars or other tokens that might be centrally controlled in supply to hold the same exchange rate to a dollar.

This sounds feasible, they did mention the use of smart contracts, but my assumption was that the bitcoin blockchain did not use smart contracts, so maybe they are using Ethereum as well?  Hope that doesn’t sound too far fetched....Thanks for your explanation

You are right about bitcoin blockchain not using smart contracts, that is why I said it was probably a contract on another blockchain. So yes, this really has nothing to do with Bitcoin directly.

878  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: So how much privacy do we really need? on: October 11, 2017, 08:39:24 PM
You are not realistic by saying
"It's our right to be 100% anonymous" or "I don't steal".

Anonymity is the right of any citizen of a modern civilized country, up to some extent. There is a red line which separates the anonymity right and the use of anonymity to conduct illegal business. If someone crosses that line, the government should waive the anonymity right for that person in question and investigate what's going on. Else if we all demand unlimited anonymity, the country will fall into anarchy. It's like demanding our right for free speech, but at the same time swearing at others. The government should protect the privacy of its lawful citizens on the other hand of course.
You might say that you don't steal and that you are righteous, but statistically there will be some people who misbehave in a society. And this must be controlled or the society will fall into chaos.

It is foolish to think that anonymity can or will destroy any chance of law and order. There are plenty of other ways to catch a criminal then to look at everybody's daily transactions. If there is an actual physical crime that took place, then start from there, the physical evidence, there is no absolute necessity to look at all the transactions of your suspect and gain knowledge about what his interests are, what websites he visits, what he writes on his social media, what he sends to his friends or a loved one, who he voted for and what his views are.

There is no necessary connection between a physical crime and information regarding someone's personal life. We shouldn't let the government scare us into giving them more power then they need. We should try to solve crimes at their core, in the physical world and leave the cyberspace as a free world of information and ideas, where no one can get physically harmed and can say whatever they want.

There is no issue with people swearing at others, that never killed or physically harmed anyone. Freedom of speech should never come second to someone's feelings getting hurt. Freedom of speech is an absolute necessity in a democracy, as all decide as one mind and there can't be limits to what that mind can think of, however scary it might be, a mind is to be free to have it's thoughts. Anonymity is a direct requirement for such democracy and freedom of speech, as lack of anonymity puts a physical body of a mind at risk for it's thoughts and ideas. Neither of those things, as they are all a product of a same idea, should come second to none. No fear should sacrifice the democracy, freedom of speech and anonymity.
879  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: bitcoin electrum doesn't show received transactions on: October 11, 2017, 08:24:06 PM
You should use a blockchain explorer like https://blockexplorer.com/ to put your txid and see what is happening with the transaction and we can take it from there. Maybe it was never broadcasted, maybe the fee is too low, maybe it is confirmed and the problem is with the Electrum wallet.

You should consider using Tor browser in case you want to keep privacy when it comes to associating that transaction with your IP.
880  Economy / Exchanges / Re: WHERE CAN I BUY BITCOINS?? on: October 11, 2017, 08:21:01 PM
You can buy some from me if you want to? Just pm me how much bitcoins you need, and I'll send them over asap.... - after you payed me of course Cheesy

I heard that paypal transactions is really easy to reverse. Aren't you concerned with the OP just reversing the transaction when you send him the coins?
