it's easy to say it now after you see the peak, but trading is far more dangerous than many think, it's not easy money, like with mining, you can also lose big with trading, not with mining, i never lost a penny with mining

And that's kind of the point to this thread.  Everyone is so hung up on ROI (even though that's not the correct term) and they want it as fast as possible.  New miners don't realize it can take a while to navigate downturns in the market.

Everyone wants big money now, and they want shortcuts to get there.  You can't blame them, they aren't experienced enough yet to know why their best laid plans may take bit longer.
862  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Best Linux distro for Nvidia Mining (ETH/Zcash?) on: July 12, 2017, 06:39:47 PM
Title says it all, I'd rather not do Win10 mining if I can get around it.  For the primary reasons of Win10 isnt slimmed down, has a lot of overhead and the remote management seems like it would be a nightmare.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a proper Linux OS for mining Nvidia cards?

While I can respect your opinion as to why you don't want to use Win 10, what does overhead in the OS have to do with mining performance?  I can tell you from experience that it has no effect.  Many of your better tools are on Windows, and  remote management is a simple checkbox in the System control panel... takes 30 seconds to enable RDP.

863  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to mine ETH without ETH wallet? on: July 12, 2017, 04:15:42 AM
You can use other profit-switching pools like miningpoolhub or zpool.ca

This brings to mind a funny story. Last year we were buying and new car and moving some things at the same time.  Basically, during the move, the heavy items put one of our older vehicles out of commission and we went out and quickly bought another used car

I'm not sure how that relates, but Ok.  Cheesy
865  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Cannot connect to Dwarfpool through Simplemining on: July 12, 2017, 12:51:52 AM
Try one of their other proxies like eth-us or eth-eu.  I haven't used SimpleMiner in a few months but the default configuration was already set to Dwarfpool, all you had to do was plug in your rig and and mining address in the fields provided.

There is no secret coin out there. Profitability went down for everything pretty much.

There are secret coins... but they are temporary.  You have to move quickly.

Noob question: Where i can learn more about this technique ?

I can't point you to a single thread or YouTube video and say "there it is."  It comes with experience, reading between the lines, reading charts, reading articles, reading threads... even when they are full of contradictory information, reading, doing, experimenting, testing theories, reading some more, diving in, learning from the mistakes, and then reading more.

It's kind of like asking Michael Jordan "how are you so good at making shots?"

Not that I'm comparing myself to Jordan in any capacity... but his likely answer would be to "keep practicing."

868  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [Awesome Miner]- Powerful Windows GUI to manage and monitor up to 5000 miners on: July 11, 2017, 06:12:10 AM
Hello,

I know this is not a problem of Awesome Miner but I would like to have your opinion on the reliability of the gains of Nicehash, Zpool and MPH.

For example, Zpool gives superb theoretical performances but we do not do it according to the practical tests.
Are these services really profitable compared to mining our currencies on our side?

Thanks.

I wrote up my take on profit switching a few pages back...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=676942.msg19944585#msg19944585

The problem is that profit pools are not fast enough to auto exchange to bitcoin, so you are usually getting a poor conversion rate by the time the exchange happens, because the coin you mined is no longer the most profitable.
869  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] ArabianChain - DubaiCoin (DBIX) - Smart Contracts from Dubai to the World on: July 10, 2017, 06:58:03 AM
You guys are in denial. This coin was profitable to mine when it was $45, and when 70MH/s were bringing me 0.3DBIX/day
$1.9 profit/day with DBIX and $5.3 profit/day on ETH

https://ibb.co/c28gqF

https://ibb.co/gV2D4a

You don't mine these coins for their stability like the big coins.  You mine them for their potential and the ability to stack lots of coins before the difficulty gets too high.

If you have more than one rig, you should be diversifying anyway.

How long have you been working on this Carson?
874  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to solve the ICO and shitcoins madness? on: July 09, 2017, 08:03:45 PM
I believe bitcointalk should also take a step forward and introduce some internal reviews and rankings before listing all of these coins and ICOs here. For example, everyone that wanted to post ANN, should first apply with their project and get audited by an internal team which would do at least basic checks and eliminate the obvious scammers.

It's almost impossible to keep up with all of the new posts like this.

Absolutely not.

In no way should bitcointalk limit free speech in that way.  It's a forum, not a gateway.
875  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Manual overclocking makes no sense on nVidia cards... on: July 08, 2017, 04:38:00 PM
Let me do the thinking.

Anyone 1080ti 300w 40C?

I think after 3 pages now, you should know the answer is no.

If you are asking for permission, then please understand that you don't need our permission.  Just try it and let us know how it goes.

If you are asking for validation, then no miner is going to approve because of the sunken cooling and power costs you will incur in your attempts to hit 300W @40C.  No one believes its worth the effort for the small gains you would see.
876  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining for the non-profit sector. Need to exceed 2 mBTC per day per 1070… on: July 07, 2017, 10:17:11 PM
It's not that I'm not listening, it's that my funders have already rejected the options you were giving me AND I'VE BEEN TELLING TOU GUYS THAT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN but no one is listening to me. The only path forward they've given me is "an app that is as user-friendly as NiceHash but without the commercial license limitation."

I don't understand this restriction around the commercial license.  Why is this a hang up?  Plenty of non-profits use commercial software with much more restrictive EULAs.  Do any of them use Apple products?  How about Microsoft?  Did any of them read the terms for Facebook, or Youtube?

But once again.  Why can't you mine using Nicehash, convert from BTC to fiat, and just donate the proceeds?  You've stated that they don't want want the benefactors trading cryptocurrencies, but you are expecting them to cash out $30,000 of bitcoin one day down the line?  BTC may be more accepted and used by that time, but it will still be confusing to most people.  And what about the tax implications of exchanging that much BTC to fiat?  How will the charity or the benefactor prove that this is a legitimate donation?
877  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining for the non-profit sector. Need to exceed 2 mBTC per day per 1070… on: July 07, 2017, 05:35:27 AM

MY FUNDERS WILL NOT BACK A PROJECT THAT EXPECTS POOR FAMILIES TO TRADE CRYPTOCURRENCIES. IT WAS LIKE PULLING TEETH TO CONVINCE THEM THAT BITCOINS AREN'T THE DEVIL'S MONEY AND THAT MODERN PCs ARE NOT DEVIL BOXES. *****IF YOU WANT TO WRITE SOFTWARE THAT WILL MINE WHATEVER IS MOST VALUABLE IN A GIVEN MOMENT AND PAYS USERS FOR THEIR EFFORT IN BITCOINS, YOU CAN HARDCODE THE PROCEEDS OF CPU MINING TO GO DIRECTLY TO YOUR OWN WALLETS*****. IF THIS IS NOT A PROJECT THAT SOUNDS INTERESTING TO YOU THEN PLEASE STOP REPLYING TO THIS THREAD.

So the main problem your benefactors have is that they don't want to use commercial software?  What's preventing you from doing the mining and donating it to them?
878  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [Awesome Miner]- Powerful Windows GUI to manage and monitor up to 5000 miners on: July 07, 2017, 05:13:36 AM
Hello Patrike,

As the others have commented, there is something really weird going on with the Profit Switching.
I have several pools added to the pool list, they are all enabled.

For some reason, the program is constantly switching to a coin which has much lesser value than the top open.
And I'm not talking about a few cents less, sometimes the coin it chooses is half the profit of the top one.

Other times it just gets stuck with a coin, like if it has a mind of its own and it decided that is going to be that coin and only that one.
Doesn't matter how many times you restart the miner and update the coin interface, it will keep going at it.
Even if you completely close the program and open it again, it will go back to that coin.

When that happens, I open the log file and look at the "Profitability information". Even in the log file it clearly says that the other coin is more profitable, yet the program continues choosing its "preferred" coin.

I know that you are busy and all but giving that this is one of the most prominent features of your program, I think it should receive priority.

I have seen this behavior from zpool.  I've read elsewhere on this forum where someone explained that zpool will intentionally put you on a different coin even if it's not the most profitable in order to get hashrate up on it.  I don't trust zpool that much.  I mined on it for several days, and my BTC rate was much much lower than even nicehash.  I've not had any problems out of MPH, though.  I mined it for a few days and it seemed reasonable... just slow with their auto conversion to BTC.
879  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [Awesome Miner]- Powerful Windows GUI to manage and monitor up to 5000 miners on: July 07, 2017, 05:08:17 AM
Hey guys i just tried to followed the step settings that puwaha mentioned earlier yesterday and left it mining overnight while i slept, it stayed on 1 algo mining, equihash the entire night with no switching, i had 8 algo's turned on to switch with...

I decided to post a video showing some of the issues im having.. i really want to get this figured out so i can use Awesome Miner in the future...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?edit=vd&v=yfpAV-9kimI

Also is there a way to adjust intensity per algo in this software?

Is this video private?

Is it possible to modify the web interface that comes with AwesomeMiner? Would be nice to customize it myself.

I'm willing to merge changes back in if I can get access to the UI for it.
Thanks i changed it from private..

Storx,

Are you passing any custom command line parameters?  When you go to the nvidia Profit Switching profile, and you select the miner software, click on the configure button... there is a section where you specify the custom miner, as it seems you uploaded Alexis78's version of CCMiner... then the section at the bottom you can pass custom parameters to the mining software.  It looks like you are passing the -a Scrypt parameter based on the diagnostics window output.
880  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Windows 10 version to GTX 1070 rig on: July 06, 2017, 03:29:40 AM
Windows has inferior stability to LINUX - and recent Windows versions haven't even been close.
For reference, I have a lot of machines that have run the Distributed.Net RC5-72 client (which is doing crypto work and loads down a GPU just as hard as any cryptocoin mining, they're doing VERY VERY similar work) and had ZERO failures in many years of operation - some having gone for 18+ YEARS with the only downtime being (1) hardware failure, usually on the hard drive (2) power outage (3) shut them down to move them - and NONE of them have ever had a software-related crash in all of those years on dozens of systems.

Uptime measured in years is COMMON for LINUX systems.
I've NEVER seen any Windows system manage 1 years uptime (one exception, a NT 3.51 SP5 server that was strictly doing file serving), and 1 MONTH uptime on anything since NT 4 SP6 is uncommon even in such narrow usage.

This is not speaking just about my own systems - I worked IT for a couple of large corporations for quite a few years, including being the #2 tech on the FAFSA on the Web site for a year and change.

Windows DOES have better tools for managing overclocking/undervolting and such, and it does handle "mixed" rigs a ton better, but those are the only advantages a Windows system has to a miner.

The UI - is definitely subjective, I have known a couple folks that liked that Win8 abomination.
In my case, the one time I tried to use it (pre-installed on a system I bought as a system), I spent 6 HOURS just trying to get one simple thing done and COULD NOT FIGURE OUT HOW.
I wanted to figure out if a piece of "pre-installed mining software" was on the machine so I could configure it and start it up - and couldn't even figure out *IF* the software had been installed, much less how to get to it to do anything with it.
Yanno, BASIC stuff - and Win8 UI would not LET ME DO IT.

It took me about ONE hour to do a "from scratch" Ubuntu / XFCE install, get the mining software installed, configured, up and running.
THAT is why I absolutely despise what I classify as the "TOTALLY UNUSABLE EXCUSE FOR A UI" that Windows 8 has and refuse to have anything to do with that abomination ever again.
By far the most USER-UNFRIENDLY excuse for a so-called UI I've ever suffered through.

I don't see how you can be seeing stability like you claim in 10 - I've yet to see ANY Win 10 system go more than a week without needing a reboot or having a crash, no matter how little I was doing on it. I eventually just said "just say no" on anything but one gaming system due to the constant crashes and joke performance issues (recent drivers are reported to have fixed the performance issues, and might have been part or most of the cause of the crashyness, I'll concede).

However, I have yet to see ANYONE claim Win10 is capable of higher performance for mining than Win7.

If I'm going to use a "server" OS, I will use LINUX - better performance, MUCH better stability, than anything Windows has ever been. I don't see the point of playing Micro$loth's massively INFLATED pricing for their "server" OS versions.

The "file window" issue is one that has been ticking a lot of folks off for YEARS, yet Mickey$loth has blown it off for years. Thus the emphasis - and I know a FEW folks and have talked to friends in IT departments in a couple of largish companies that have stated that it is one reason they refuse to move away from XP on at least SOME of their production systems - and in a couple of those cases it was the "straw that broke the camel's back" on a decision to abandon Windows entirely and move to a LINUX solution.

If you like Win 10, that's your call - just don't expect EVERYONE to believe you when you make claims that go against the experience of a lot of folks about "how stable" it is.

QuintLeo,

I respect your opinions and input on a great many subjects, but your information on Windows is biased, and just wrong.  No offence, bro.
