@statdude:
Do you think you could also post the relative % of the emitted coins that is represented in your stats? Think it would just be interesting to learn what percentage of the monero currently in circulation is being represented/stated by people filling the form.

903  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] cudaMiner & ccMiner CUDA based mining applications [Windows/Linux/MacOSX] on: August 29, 2014, 11:33:36 PM
I will most certainly buy 1 or 2 GTX980 when they are out. But that's not my point. I have not planed to use them for mining so it's almost irrelevant how they perform there. Also Gameing performance is not a big criteria for me. If anything than the rendering performance is what I am most interested in.

However 1000 cuda cores are still 1000 cuda cores and I want to have more cuda cores than the card I last bought.
Same as with CPU. Yes a 1GHz CPU can be faster than a 2GHz one. But still it's strange to buy a 1GHz once you had 2 GHz.

If you don't have the need don't buy... that's all I can really tell you.....

I would add that for someone that mostly cares for rendering performance (and I'll assume that your rendering work translates to raw compute performance), you should really look at Titan and/or Quadro cards. The 690 has a lot more cores than the regular Titan, yet the compute performance of the Titan is way ahead.

You might find some useful data on this review:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6774/nvidias-geforce-gtx-titan-part-2-titans-performance-unveiled

On the other hand, the typical replacement candidate for any Nvidia, is the same performance reference @ 2 gen's upwards. As we're apparently skipping the 800 convention for the high end desktop series: if you have a 690, you'll be looking for a 990 once it's out, if you have a 670, a 970, and so on... Personally, I find that most times a single generation bump is not worth the cost or bother for the little performance gains one will have.

The 690 is a very .. very old card already ..  and I didn't buy it for crypto mining but rendering.

My point is that it sux that my old card has after so much time till more cuda cores than any new you can buy.

And the Titan Z.. well ..who in the right mind will buy that one!?  I wonder if they every sell one such card for the price they dream. So forget about that one.
The 690 was in the price range of a normal card back then.

What sucks, is that a lot of people are still buy into the obvious marketing moves and don't really take the time to learn the differences in fine print. You are comparing two very distinct architectures on a single metric, and one that does not even translate directly into any absolute benchmark reference point. Manufacturers take advantage of this to squeeze every last bit of profit that they can with each product generation...

Let me put this in other words: How performing/fast are the individual units of cuda cores for each card? What's their relative memory bandwidth? What are the base & boost clocks? What's the overclocking headroom? How tolerant is the cooling design towards sustained usage at max TDP? Are there any hardware instructions exclusive to either architecture? What are their respective compute levels? What are their relative efficiencies?

I could go on and on, and these are just the most basic specifications, most of which are certain to be listed on any product page (once a product actually exists).

I for one, am very interested in the 800/900 series, as these will be super at dual duties. A pair/trio of these in SLI will be a massive game setup, and even if we're stuck with 28nm, the Maxwell generation is well proven to be efficient at mining. The 750TI might even continue to be the most cost effective choice for mining (or perhaps the most efficient in pure W/hash), but it is really just for the casual, low-res gamer as it is entry level and has no SLI support.

For mining alone, density should be an important factor, but only for those that might call themselves "farmers". I have a single game PC/rig, and a spare PC that I can assign to mining duties if I need to move some 750TI's around. So personally, I don't care for density all that much (yet?).

running the current win64_cryptonite-qt, trying a fresh sync, i get up to 7 days behind, then
Not enough 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 0 0
Not enough 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 0 0
infinitely repeats and no further progress occurs.

any suggestions or insights, or am i stuck until i debug this?

I ran into the same problem yesterday, and repeated the whole process (fresh/cleared appdata folder each time) a couple of times. At the 3rd attempt my qt effectively sync'ed past that dreaded '7 days behind' point. It seems to be related to which peers you're connecting to, but I don't really know what or why.

I'll edit this post to get you my peers list in a bit.

anyway the temps was around 85-86, these cards shouldn't handle those temps without problem?

Oh, I never go above a very conservative 65°C core temp on any of my cards. Mainly because if the core is 65, the VRM could still very well be around 90°C and I'm planning to use the cards for a long time.

That's the issue right there. The VRMs do not normally impact on fan speed directly (at best, only by residual heat transfer to surrounding area, thus raising the overall cooling demands). These are usually the 1st to 'die', not the GPU core or RAM.

For mining, or in other words, long periods of gpu operating at the highest clock, I personally keep 60°C as my limit (on 750 TI's). With a previous 770 I didn't have much of a choice though, the best I could ever keep it at while mining, was some 65°C.

... yada yada yada ...

Please make an effort. Senseless posting will not earn you any trollpoints(tm).

I'm actually a windows miner, and had 4 blocks using a single desktop CPU at launch time. Once GPU mining was available, I've been mining with 4x 750 TIs, which you can imagine, make me a "huge stakeholder" here. I'm bound to loose the house if this thing drops a cent. Oh, wait, that doesn't sound right, does it now?

While I do agree that windows users got screwed at the start for the short duration that win-wallets were broken, it doesn't amount to anything of significance, given the extremely slow emission rate. I got screwed then, still made some blocks, and the dev was notably fast in addressing the problem right when it was spotted (a few hours is all it took...).

In any case, please carry on, let's bump this baby all day long!  Grin

All development around this and similar coins is there to justify inflated prices and make bagholders feel better while they are holding overpriced coins.

I'll bite, as a form of appreciation for the trollbump(tm).
Where are all these "similar coins"? I kindly request a sensible post, say, point us towards innovations on a similar platform to 'miniblockchain', or perhaps an emission rate of ~50% in 10 years. Similar stuff.  Roll Eyes

Maybe you could give the 2nd XCN(maybe the 3rd, if include the dead minipool) pool a try. http://xcn.theblocksfactory.com/

But I did actually! Unfortunately, this pool is not working with the CCMiner binary from DJM34 (last checked yesterday).
Once that's fixed, I'll be certain to give theblocksfactory another go.  Wink

developer, u might want to invite dwarf pool for this coin. I am sure they will be glad to host
Definitely an awesome ideia for such great pool.  Wink

+1

Big fan of Dwarf's here. They're my favorite Monero pool, and have also mined with them various other coins in the past, have not had any reason to complain, ever. On some coins (I recall JPC was one such example), Dwarf's performance was/is just superb, and I'd have consistently better payouts there.

In any case, the more the merrier!  Wink

912  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: August 18, 2014, 12:44:53 AM

That's an education thing that we'll have to battle through - getting people to understand that there's no central money control or anything. However, I think the conversation is going to be a lot easier.

"You just create a new account, which is completely secure and free, and you can create as many different accounts as you need for you, your wife, your business, whatever. And the great thing is that there's no government or company that controls your money, just like with Bitcoin, so you are in control of your money."

fulffypony: While I generally agree with the use of 'account' replacing 'wallet', I'd like to offer a suggestion to the team's consideration:

Wallet -> Account
Address -> Account Number (or Account ID, or something in those lines)

For people unfamiliar with crypto currencies in general, the function/meaning of "address" finds it's obvious counterpart in the traditional monetary systems, in the expression "account number" (unless there's some other expression that eludes me). I think this particular understanding is vital in making the shift to "account" successful.

This would be a brief, yet sensible description, that integrates both terms:
Creating an account in the P2P Monero network, is the process of generating a Monero account number, under the control of an individual's private key (or seed?).

PS1: I think that there's some conflating the everyday use of 'wallet' as the "location/resource/data that holds funds for an individual", and the use of 'wallet' as the "piece of software that an individual uses to manage/operate on his funds". Is there a name yet for the new GUI, the upcoming Monero Client? (/hint /suggestion)

PS2: I struggled to express my thoughts concerning the terminology, hope this makes enough sense to spark some discussion, or perhaps feedback from any of the (many) brighter minds in this community.

And now that you've doomed my "monujo.com" domain worthless, I'll let it go for 3 Moneros, any takers? 2 Moneros? 1 Monero? Hell No!
Cheers,
~ Myagui

^^ Well, now would be a good time for them to dive in  Grin

It's just the second time I've had a really unexpected buy order filled.
With any luck it will turn out as good as the previous one!
PS: Happy either way. I'll either be holding more moneritos in the long run, or some more BTC shortly!

seem they dont have any such plan, including pools...

That's not entirely fair, as Bitfreak even setup a bounty thread. Not much going on there though, which again, looks like we need more promotion & wider adoption so that such things as bounties can move forward. Large stakeholders are kindly invited to add more substance to the bounties!  Grin

I cannot connect to any pools. Tried 3 all unable to connect =*(

Perhaps post your batch/command parameters to see if there's something off.

Edit: In other news, JPC is fast approaching a good looking jackpot again (~2 BTC), though not sure it's worthwhile mining it unless you're the one hitting the jackpot!  Grin

My rig of 6x750Ti was working some hours with previous reliece of ccminev and then have been stoping responding.
I set it v2 now, and I'm testing..
With the first reliece (posted into cryptonite thread) the rig was pritty stable...

As the new version puts out greater hashrate, it is most certain that it is pushing the cards harder. Usually that just means that you need to turn down your overclocking a bit, if you were right at the edge of stability. The best practice and for maximum performance, is that for any new algorithm, you should start from 0 overclock (or a very modest one), and work your way up to find out what the highest setting that the cards will take with that algorithm.
An overclock that works fine for X13 mining, might crash with X11 mining (just a random example).

Happy Mining,

Any promotion plans ? The most talking is miner, and miner, still miner.
I know that's very important, but we need to attract more investors too.

Though I would add that other than "miner, and miner, still miner", we also need more "pools, and pools, still pools"  Wink
As an investor, I would be concerned to see that all the nethash is concentrated on a single pool (1GH).
