Thanks for the links. It looks like even in the best case scenario, I'm looking at a year before I make a return. I wish I'd found out about Bitcoin sooner Sad

Ya best to just learn more about it , maybe buy some coins if you think it's going up - Mining ain't for everyone.  But then again having a miner run on your PC when you'd be on it anyway can't hurt (much)

Now that I think about, if I had 10-20-50g laying around I would buy some more houses in Florida, yes some are selling for 10-50k 3 bedrooms with pools right now, and can rent out 600-850 a month after fixing up, honestly much more profitable then mining - from a biz perspective anyway

Geez - if I was like you guys, ie> in the path, I would shut down mining as soon as the winds pickup - sometimes when power goes out it will trip on and off 10 or 20 times quick, very bad for computers running at max - even with surge protectors!

Enjoy!

think it will take a good Thash off!

944  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are the major hurdles you feel BitCoin faces to mainstream acceptance? on: August 27, 2011, 10:23:49 PM
Lol +1 for being funny.  Picture someone trying to explain Bitcoin to the average guy on the street, it isn't going to work.

I have tried explaining what bitcoin is and how it works to my friends a numerous amount of times, and I find it near impossible, even though I am such a well-spoken and smart person. The only way I can explain bitcoins to anyone that I know is by dumbing it down to the point where it doesn't even seem interesting.

Yep I get the same puzzled looks.. and the older crowd is like 'but its not money you cant hold it'  - And to other poster I am all for spreading the word , and do so - going to pitch the idea to small business association locally some time soon, but really you don't need mainstream appeal to be successful. To me its a small gamble, always have multiple horses int he race they say...

Look at gold .. 90 to 95% (maybe higher) US citizen has no idea that gold is money, even after this run from 250 to 1900 .. there just isn't wide mainstream appeal, but hey I would say that isn't such a bad thing it has worked out very well for me.  i fell bitcoin may be similar as time goes on.

Kinda like the apple stock holder arguments to me "i'm up 400%!!!" ..but yeah everything you buy costs 500% more.. you lost, after taxes, well lets not even go there such deep thoughts lol

946  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are the major hurdles you feel BitCoin faces to mainstream acceptance? on: August 27, 2011, 06:22:14 PM
I don't ever see mainstream wide adoption really.

You have to have an IQ over 60 really to use bitcoins.  That cuts about 50% of the population out right there.

that is unless maybe you could dumb it down enough to an iZombie app or something.

It makes one proud to be a Bitcoin miner...

Apparently, for most Bitcoin miners, when you hear about a massive hurricane about to hit the most populated area in the United States, your first thought is,

"Bwahaha...some miners might die and/or have to shut down their rigs. Less difficulty... more $$$ for me!"

Oh, wait a minute...I was confusing pride with shame...
 Roll Eyes

lol.. ya I had a month of no power back in 2004 here in FLA and must say it's always in the back of my mind 'what happens if I lose power for a month or so again'

Oddly enough Irene only gave us about 30-40 mph winds down here so although I like the storms, was glad we kept power!

Chances of 4 hurricanes hitting here in a 1 month time frame is pretty low, but it did happen once
949  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Going offline for hurricane irene on: August 27, 2011, 08:00:45 AM
Stay safe!

Must say I am kind of curious how much overall hash rate this storm actually removes, directly or indirectly. Seems it could shut down millions and millions of homes on the east coast.

time will tell -

get lots of water and hunker down y'all!

I was gonna input on this thread, then remembered the world's real problems like all the banks in the world collapsing, USD & Euro being printed to below toilet paper, and the likely collapse of all fiat civilization...er what was I saying  Roll Eyes

952  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The $1 Billion Armageddon Trade on: July 30, 2011, 05:34:00 PM
It depends on what type of agreement is reached.

A) No agreement, then highly likely. The republicans would love for some shit to happen and blame Obama. (2012 elections hello....)

B) Debt ceiling is raised but only enough for 6 months. Still likely that we could lose our triple A

C) Debt ceiling is raided substantially.  No we do not lose our triple A.

AAA will be lost doing C as well, just FYI - And those who think we should do another 2.5 trill.. that's 25k per every person in this country... and it will be all gone right after next years elections,... if it even lasts that long

1million+ liability for every taxpayer as of today... no possible solution unless the dollar loses 90% of value

953  Economy / Economics / Re: So I met a guy who makes Algorithmic Trading Programs for High Frequency Trading on: July 30, 2011, 06:38:33 AM
Over 90% of all trades are algos.. only way to win is to not play.  as far as 'who's money is it' .. its yours..if you are wise enough to not directly invest, all those taxes you pay into public servant pensions gets pennied every millisecond and you pay the bill.

Check out "stop loss killa algo" here.. this is natural gas.... so you pay there as well

954  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining on ancient computer... on: July 29, 2011, 01:25:28 AM
Is it worth it? I am using an old p4 computer with no standalone gfx card and certainly no openCL support....

I mine at like 900khash/s.

I guess I don't fully understand the concept yet, so I'm asking you....

Is it worth it?

Will I recieve any bitcoins?

Prolly not , not sure if it will even be able to have enough to ever get a share?  Even if it did is your electricity free?

955  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 6,072,279.6165 bitcoin transaction HOW THE F... [Solved] on: July 28, 2011, 09:43:56 PM
What's with the long series of regular, ~5000 BTC transfers?

I'd say these are legitimate coins being moved by a large pool or exchange.

It's a steadily-tapering amount that's now down to about 400 BTC per transaction.

yep scares the herd it seems too... looks like a bot gone bad imo

958  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Can you share your experience with a failing PSU? on: July 22, 2011, 01:33:46 AM
Could you share your experience with a failing PSU?  Note, I mean failing, not already failed (that's obvious).

What were the symptoms leading up to a failure?  any unexplained behaviors observed?

Thanks!

If you want, look for a program called Everest, It can show voltages for 12, 5, 3.3 , etc - if they are 10% off or more you may want to get a b/u PSU

sometimes it can find problems before they even begin.

Ahh very informative going to try out Everest, Thanks Palmdetroit

Ya that program is great (and much easier/safer than using a multimeter to check voltages, hehe). I did forget to mention to slowly increase load from vid/hds, cpu, and monitor the voltages, as joules pointed out. I always run everything at 100% so forgot that part  Grin
