If we love Bitcoin, each one of us should be doing *some* of these things each week.
942  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / StrongCoin.com just published a method to generate off-line transactions on: November 08, 2011, 03:25:28 PM

This is freaking huge in my book.

I don't understand why anyone uses windows.

I think mappers vs packers theory applies. Honestly, I don't want Linux to be a mainstream desktop OS. I'd much prefer it keep it's "high hanging fruit" status.

I think Microsoft will eventually have to take away all choice, your system auto upgrades to latest version and it can't be stopped.

Makes me giggle to think of all the apps this could break.

I don't think there's any "kind of transaction" you can make that will invalidate the thief's copy of your wallet.

He just means that you're "invalidating" it by taking the money out of it and not using it anymore. The thief would still have access to the private keys to send money, but there would be none there. And you may have to watch for future transactions sent to that wallet and "spend" them before the thief did.

What rodeoX said...

If you have a significant sum of Bitcoins, you should take a large portion offline immediately into multiple addresses (so you dont have to bring your entire offline sum online if you need to spend a small amount). Move the rest to a new wallet to spend as needed like allowance or discretionary spending.

If there's any indication your machine has been compromised or unauthorized/malicious software has been able to run on your system, your only recourse to be absolutely sure is to reflash your bios, wipe your drive, and reinstall.

Anything less than that, and you can't really be sure you're in a trustable, safe state.

bitventory.com looks interesting (like strongcoin, but signable java instead of unsignable javascript).

Wallet Unlock Failure

Sorry, your wallet failed to unlock. This is probably due to an invalid password. Please try again.

951  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: physical shop on: November 05, 2011, 01:23:34 AM
I think he means like a physical store to "purchase" Bitcoins.

The point of bitcoin locator is to locate exchangers, enthusiasts, etc.

Also, any bank of america or chase bank is a physical location to work with the online exchanges... that is, you deposit money in the bank, it goes directly to the online exhcange's account and they send you bitcoins in a matter of hours. try get-bitcoin.com

You don't need to have bitcoin actively running to receive coins

I absolutely love this.... for example... you make some bitcoin addresses(and keys offline) with bitaddress.org... they've never "seen the internet"... yet you can send money at any time to those addresses... get some more bitcoins 3 months later during a dip? no need to bring that address online... just keep sending the bitcoins to the address.. it's like a super secure savings account.
954  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: multiple wallets on: November 04, 2011, 04:03:23 AM
Think of it like this... the blockchain contains the data to determine a wallet's balance and the wallet.dat file contains the data to spend bitcoins, or rather, sign money away to other addresses.

If you're taking your money off-line, then yes, you should make several wallets and keep various denominations in those wallets. When you need to bring some money "online" you just open as many offline wallets as you need to get the amount you need.. that way, the rest of the off-line money stays safe offline. and actually, you don't really need whole wallets for keeping stuff offline.. you can use bitaddress.org to generate just the bitcoin addresses (and keys) (offline).

srsly? fucking A =D

btw, from everything ive read so far, it seems to me that bitcoins arent really stored on any file, but associated with a certain wallet which cannot be accessed without the wallet.dat file. the reason i think that are the instructions on how to make a 100% secure wallet. the way i understand it, the wallet.dat file you're supposed to put your money doesn't seem to be online at any point except for when you retrieve money from it. is this accurate or am i misunderstanding something?

also, wouldnt it be way safer to have a shit-ton of wallets with only small amounts in each (each with their own password of course) rather than having one wallet with everything in it? yes, it'd be tedious but safer, wouldnt it? (assuming you're able to memorize a high quantity of very complicated passwords that is)

If you're not here for the betterment of Bitcoin, then get your mother fuckin' ass off this forum.

I like your style. But the libertarian in me says they have a right to say what they want and we have the right to hit the Ignore button.

957  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BIP - Capitilizing on Bitcoin's Block Space. on: November 03, 2011, 10:36:41 PM
Dont see how this would work as the data would be stored in the block (and a burden to all blockchain processors) for the rest of history.

I have wondered about the introduction of "super blocks" that would contain summaries of all previous bitcoin address balances so that the blockchain could be truncated from time to time. For instance, every million blocks, a summary is computed for all known addresses and balances so that all previous blocks could be removed and the blockchain shortened.
958  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is your net return in USD? on: November 02, 2011, 04:30:42 PM
I know, but it seems such a pointless reference though?

If you invest in bitcoin, you obviously realize the failures of fiat and its doomed future. So why keep pegging the value of a coin to how much it can be traded for in fiat? The only motive I can see for doing it is that you much prefer fiat and don't give a crap about bitcoin other than how much profit it can put in your bank account. But if this is the case, you are a stupid investor because there are many better fiat investment opportunities.

Logic tells you that anyone trading bitcoin for fiat profit is suffering from cognitive dissonance.

No, it's really not a pointless reference... a currency has to be relative to some other store of value to establish its own value. It's like velocity in space - It only means something relative to other objects. You could value your bitcoins in Toyota Trucks, but that would be rather difficult. Everyone understands commons like USD, Gold, etc..
959  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is your net return in USD? on: November 02, 2011, 04:20:40 PM
If people are investing in bitcoin solely to realize fiat profit, what is the bloody point? Trade forex, stocks and shares, bonds or commodities. They are far more reliable markets with much higher trade volume, so you are much less likely to lose your precious fiat.

it's just a relative reference. I dont plan on giving up my Bitcoins until Bitcoin is ubiquitous. At that time, I feel the few I have will be worth a lot more than today. If Bitcoin really is ubiquitous by then, I'll just start spending the Bitcoins unless there is some caveman that has something I want and only accepts fiat.
960  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why are so many people Anti-Bitcoin? on: November 02, 2011, 03:55:44 PM
1)  Bitcoin eh?  Scary.  Yeah that is the coming of the Apocolypse.  The book of revelation says we are going to have one world currency as the hosrsemen bring down the heavens.

Wow, that's awesome... Denying Bitcoin is like denying God's will.
