961  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / weird idea: a bitcoin game on: April 08, 2011, 02:43:16 PM
while thinking about kibas plan to make a game funded by bitcoins
http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5465.0
i thought about an old abandoned fun project of mine, a remake of agent usa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_USA

when i thought about reviving the project (and maybe get someone to give me some bitcoins for it  Grin) i imagined possible mods and stuff and got an idea: why not make it a bitcoin related game instead?

the basic idea is very simple: you keep the games fundamentals, like the train traveling, normal and zombie-like people and dropping replicating objects to save the latter.
but instead of dropping crystals, you drop bitcoins. regarding the backgroundstory, the zombies are not "fuzzed" like in the original game, but just panicking because they are scared of their monetary system collapsing. (printing too much money like the US, or having to save one country after another like in the EU)
to make it more about bitcoins not just a remake with different graphics, there should be a simplified version of the bitcoin generation model  present in the game. so when bitcoins start replicating, difficulty increases and the replication slows down. after a certain amount is generated, smaller coins are generated, which only save zombies if they get more than one. to counter those effects, value increases for every saved zombie, who is now using bitcoin instead of dollars. i am thinking of a moving status bar, that moves in one direction whenever the new bitcoins get "smaller", and the other direction when they get more valuable)

so, when you get the growing number of panicking people to accept bitcoins fast without generating bitcoins that just lie around, your bitcoin value is high and the game stays easy. if you stash to much bitcoins or have them lie around without being picked up, value decreases and you will have to give huge amounts to convert new people. (alternative: conversion needs a fixed amount and you gain money from converting people with bitcoin and if the value gets too low you might not have enough money to travel)
you win the game when you accumulate a certain amount of real world value in bitcoins and bring it to the central bank (the ex-fuzz bomb) to convert the countries currency to bitcoin.

so, what do you think?
is this idea worth pursuing or is too silly or the whole agent usa game concept not interesting enough?
962  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Crowdfunding 1200 BTC (150 BTC pledged) for Automata RTS Game on: April 08, 2011, 12:06:53 AM
For those who wants to view my code repository: https://github.com/kiba/jstet

It's not the most nice looking code in the world, but I been working on this project on and off for several months. With the Automata RTS, I'll work on it harder and faster than I work on JStet.

wtf javascript?!

didnt know thats a serious option in game programming...
963  Economy / Economics / Re: A Debate on the Usefulness of "donating" Miners on: April 02, 2011, 12:24:02 PM
i think your model misses the fact that the most profitable kind of mining is gpu mining with already purchased gfx cards and computers. you dont lose all the amateurs when you switch off the coin generation in the client but only those who dont have such a gfx card or are not tech-savvy enough to use it.
i also think that cpu mining is rather useless. you need something like 50-100 cpus to get the mining performance of one gpu.
964  Economy / Marketplace / Re: New bitcoin project: SEO link building marketplace on: March 21, 2011, 05:06:18 PM
although i like people creating new ways to spend and earn bitcoins, i think context links are not a good way for advertisement. since there is no way to distinguish them from links from the original author they effectively disturb the way a blog post or article is supposed to be read and thus lower the overall quality of the text.
if you intent to offer any other forms of ads i would be happy to use your service.
965  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: JAPAN TSUNAMI RELIEF, PLEASE READ on: March 12, 2011, 03:25:39 PM
why donate something after all?

japan is still one of the richer nations. short term direct help by other nations military or civilian catastrophy organizations is necessary of cause, but why money? thats exactly what governments and reinsurance companies are made for. unlike many other countries, japan has both of them.

Lets say we have two yard workers, Jorge and Bill.

Jorge is an excellent yard worker, and advertises that he will mow lawns, trim trees, and trim hedges. For Jorge, who is awesome at what he does, mowing a lawn takes only 10 minutes, as does trimming hedges, while the trees take 20.

Bill is a beginner, and only advertises mowing lawns. He is horrible, and mowing a lawn takes 30 minutes for him.

Bill does one yard for every thirty minutes of work. Jorge takes 40 minutes per yard. over the course of the 8-hour day, Jorge mows only 12 yards, while Bill completes 16. If Jorge and Bill work together, Bill specializing on mowing, and Jorge doing the trees and hedges, they can together, complete 16 lawns.

so, jorge and bill complete 16 lawns, while jorge and another jorge complete 24 lawns. worst example ever.

I'm looking for something that embodies the ideas of: nimble, yet robust, trustworthy, distributed,

this guy (gal actually) here is mystaceus:

she totally wants to lend your her name.
doesnt she look trustworthy indeed? and robust! plus, almost everybody can spell her name.
and spider webs are a very good reminder how super distributed, nimble, yet robust your whatever product thingy is. well, she is a jump spider with absolutely no nets, but who knows that, right?

well ok, the name sucks. but i really tried. unfortunately, after reading  "brobust" and "crustworthy" it was basically a lostcause  Grin

972  Other / Off-topic / Re: Religions and business on: March 01, 2011, 05:32:37 PM
Of course in measuring the decline of violence it helps to have a very narrow definition of violence.  For example, by excluding over 1 million abortions/year in the US alone is an interesting approach.  Whether you are pro or anti abortion, there is no doubt that 'violence' is taking place during an abortion (lesbian libertarian feminist Camille Paglia has an honest view of what an abortion is, articulated here.

there is also violence taking place during kidney transplantations. so what?

Really though to deny the positive impact of true Christianity on raising the status of women, children, immigrants, the poor and others from the time of Rome to the present day displays a significant ignorance of history.

yeah, thanks for the no true scotsman.

why does anybody need an external source of morality anyway?
its not like anybody ever acts in accordance with the rules. as soon as their specific ruleset conflicts with their needs and wishes, people break the rules. then they either justify it with some other contradicting part of the ruleset or they bask in self-contempt, whichever they like better.
well, maybe its just personal preference. some people like to do what they want, others like feeling guilty about doing what they want  Wink

976  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Sind Bitcoins legal? on: February 27, 2011, 12:22:56 PM
977  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 5870 & 5970 Full Load Power Consumption on: February 26, 2011, 11:56:30 PM
power supplies deliver less and less energy over time. and they age faster when they constantly have to supply too much power. so in my opinion, a suitable power supply is a good investment.
