621  Other / Off-topic / Hacker, Pinkie Pie, wins Two $60,000 Prizes (somebody shoot me!) on: October 18, 2012, 07:50:19 PM

Quote
Google hosted its Pwnium 2 competition at Hack in the Box 2012 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The winner, Pinkie Pie, went home with a $60,000 prize and a free Chromebook. Pie, incidentally had also won $60,000 in the first Pwnium competition held earlier this year. The bug that Pie had discovered relies on a WebKit Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) compromise to exploit the renderer process. This time, he found a bug in the IPC layer to escape the Chrome sandbox.

That's nine so far, all different people. If that's not the case, then some 'plaining's in order.

Not sure which Sonny above is BFL_Sonny.

Feel free to post other names so that I can add them to the list.

The reason for the research is to see how many of the 22 employees are dedicated to the assembly line by deduction (subtraction).

624  Other / Off-topic / Wordpress (with Poll) on: October 16, 2012, 05:22:23 PM
I'm at the early stages of developing a website and currently exploring all my options.

At first, I was leaning away from Wordpress as a CMS choice due to being somewhat aware of its security flaws and not sure if it could handle what I have in mind, namely something slightly similar to this: http://www.themillionpagewebsite.com/

I have learned that The Million Page Website uses Joomla for its CMS and, if that's the case, Wordpress should be able to perform the same tasks I envision, which would help in developing my site since I'm very familiar with WP. I would still need the services of a programmer(s) to incorporate various other aspects I have in mind for this project: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=118178.0

Addressing WP's security concern, I did find this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bulletproof-security/

Then I was really taken aback when I discovered a list of notable brands currently using WP for its CMS (take a look): http://en.wordpress.com/notable-users/

The site I intend on building is based on the same premise as The Million Page Website, in the sense that users/members will have a page of their own, based on a tier system with a bump factor built in. Similar business models have been tried, but have fallen short for a myriad of reasons. The best example would be the infamous The Million Dollar Homepage, but its lock-in design has many broken links, coupled with not being very practical today (if ever) and looking too tacky.

But enough of what my project will consist of at this interval. I look forward to the discussion on Wordpress, hopefully to learn if it's a viable CMS choice for my endeavor.

If Wordpress does prove to be a viable CMS choice, I would be able to start building the site on my own showing proof-of-concept, then take on a programmer(s) to build and assure its functioning dynamics. What I don't want to do is build the preliminary site with a subpar CMS, then have to back-pedal and rebuild the thing.

625  Other / Off-topic / (Poll) Atlas or Dank? on: October 16, 2012, 01:29:50 AM
Oops! I tried to reset the poll to 60/90 days, but clicked the reset button thinking that would do it. The tally was 14-20 in favor of Dank. The contest is still active, but I'll forego the voting aspect. Everything has to be double, sans the voting aspect, for Atlas or Dank to win the now $100 gift certificate.

The winner will receive, from me, a $50 gift certificate redeemable at an eating establishment close to their home of their choice. The establishment must offer gift certificates and I should be able to buy it here in Sandwich, IL, or online. An example would be Applebees.

The only other requirements is that by the end 30 days (via the time stamp when this thread stated: 30 days at 08:29:50 PM CST) when the poll ends (I did set the poll for 30 days), there must be no less than 300 votes and this thread must have no less than 300 posts expressing the poster's favorite by the end of the 30 days. Posts must be longer than the maximum character count that Twitter allows--144 characters (English).

Somebody please quote this post, locking in the rules.

I have not yet voted, but will.

628  Economy / Services / Seeking domain registrars to purchase 9 TLD, 1 for 10 years. on: October 14, 2012, 02:45:14 AM
I've always used Godaddy in the past, but for this order I choose to use a registrar by a fellow Bitcoiner. I may even break up the purchases in 3-4 parts. I'm not price shopping, but I do desire to explore my options by seeing a myriad of domain name registrars in one thread.

I will be purchasing a total of 9 domain names, one of which I will register for the max of 10 years (correct me if there is a longer time frame). The other 8 for only 1 year, but will extend all 8 to equal the max set for the main domain name next year if all goes well. I'm not planning on using a proxy for the main domain name, but may opt for that option if it's free for the other 8.

The project I have in mind can be viewed here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=118178.0

Thank you in advance,

~Bruno K~
629  Other / Off-topic / Business Venture that Accepts Bitcoin (desire input) on: October 13, 2012, 01:38:22 AM
EDIT: At the bottom of this post is the list of individuals who've earned one free premium account valued at $20 USD ($10 if BTC), redeemable once the site is up and running.

The first input I desire is to let me know which section I should put this in since I'm only at its preliminary stage.

It does consists of a product, but not a physical one unless merchandising related to the site is purchased (shirts, cups, etc.). It does not consist of barn wood, furniture, or hand tooled leather.

It'll be web based and not have Bitcoin in its domain name. Bitcoin could have a big part in this venture, but it's truly not needed. But since I'm a Bitcoin enthusiast, I feel it important to include it in this project. There will be a 50% discount on the primary site when any product/service offered is purchased with Bitcoin. Related merchandise can be purchased at cost (approximatley 20%) when using Bitcoin. All others using fiat pay full price. The majority of the products/service offered well generally be in the $1-$20 range.

I will be registering the .com domain name for 10 years, as well as the .net and .org for 1 year. Two similar names will be registered for all 3 TLD for 1 year, thus a total of 9 domains will be registered. I've always used Godaddy when I've registered in the past, but will strongly entertain using a domain provider by a seasoned bitcoiner in the spirit of keeping it ($) in the family.

This venture idea is not a ruse in any sense of the word. For an example, it's nothing along the lines of a hookah bar, revamping a theatre, buying a car or motorcycle, etc. The site will be 100% legit, although I have envisioned how it could be used as a mixer of sorts (this is the only time I will mention that concern).

I will need programmers on an ongoing basis, up to the point where the site is fully functioning, then beyond. To know if your skills are needed, I will be outlining certain things that I desire the website to do, albeit they will be vague at first to not let the proverbial cat out the bag prior to launch.

I'm planning on doing this endeavor out of pocket, but now am toying with the idea of having investors. <it was at this point that having investors entered in the grand scheme of things entered my mind--it was later that I refer to this point as to having an epiphany> The only reason for investors is to have the full product/service up and running in a quicker time frame. All the investor's money will go toward the development of the project, where I pocket no moneys from the initial sales until all investors are paid. I will pay back 100% plus the initial investment within a year (let's call it 364 days) to the initial investors, with any further investors coming on board receiving a prorated return. Chances are very good that all will be paid back in a much quicker time frame with the full 100% interest, but wanted to give myself a little cushion.

All investors will receive the main product/service free of charge valued up to the total of amount they have invested. If an investor invested $100, they receive a $100 service/product free, the same exact item as if they were only an actual customer.

Once the site it fully up and running, I will probably need a full time staff to run the thing, making sure the backend is always working. This will be a huge site and will demand a lot of attention. I don't foresee needing a large office building to maintain this thing, but that's not out of the realm of possibility further down the road. That said, the goal is to have all the staff working from their homes or current offices.

The one person I desire to be on board down the road is Rassah as the CFO. I have not spoken with him, nor anybody else for that matter, about this project.

That's it for now. Please ask any questions, and let me know if this thread needs to be in a different section. Perhaps at its current state, probably not, but hopefully by tomorrow I will have a new thread up in the proper section.

The running list of those entitled to one free premium account (individuals and company owners are treated separately, therefore it's possible for one person to have more than one premium account, e.g., edd):

  • All admins/mods of this forum (past, present & future).
  • Owners of companies that accept Bitcoin and their staff, no matter how small their concern.
  • All those that have sent me a PM or email helping me with this endeavor, but haven't commented on any threads related to this project.
  • All those that I've ever been critical of in the past for one reason or another. e.g.: Josh; Bruce Wagner; Atlas; etc. Simply contact me with a quoted text, and one premium account is yours for the asking.

  • nomorecoin
  • gweedo
  • Any other member of this forum will receive, for free, a $1 USD premium account, which will be worth more than that proverbial buck, and you'll see why once the site is live.

The individual names on the above list were gleaned from those who've currently posted in threads related to this endeavor.

There is one main caveat. Although I've stated that I will refrain from mentioning the investor aspect of this endeavor prior to its soft launch, any investors will be given first choice of premium spots, but don't worry, when you see what the site consist of, a myriad of valuable opportunities will still be readily available. That's even indicative of somebody from the wild purchasing any tier account a year, or years, from its inception. I'm so excited, if there were a pony with a pink tale about, her 'tale' would be mine.

All other members of this forum entitled to the $1 USD premium account (see end of list) will be able to activate their accounts after any investors and those on the list above have already gotten theirs.

Josh Blue (born November 27, 1978) is an American comedian. He was voted the Last Comic Standing on NBC's reality show Last Comic Standing during its fourth season, which aired May–August 2006. Blue has cerebral palsy, and much of his self-deprecating humor is centered on this.

Since he's "special", the material he needs for each show can be gleaned from this forum.

For instance:

I picked up a new hobby. Something to keep my hands busy between gigs, the soccer season. and masterbating. As you can tell by the erotica movements of my right arm, it's telling me it wants to do something. <at right arm> Not now! Soccer season doesn't start for another two months. Seriously, those of you who follow soccer know that hands are not allowed to touch the ball unless your the goatse. I meant goalie. Especially if one plays in the league I'm in unless your fortunate enough to be born without legs, then by all means use your fuckin' hands.

Where was I? Oh yea, my new hobby. I started mining bitcoins. Who here has heard about Bitcoin? I see a few hands. Great! Please explain it to the others so that I can continue with this bit and hopefully by the end of it we'll all be up to speed.

The reason I'm asking is due to the following image:

The image was gleaned from Hi, my name is Sonny Vleisides. I put the quote is code tags because the thread is locked, but if it wasn't, it would look like the following:

Code:
...I'm on a good track now, trying to put the past behind me.

[img]http://communityhosting.net/ih/images/sfamj.jpg[/img]

Somewhere along the way, I got involved with the BFL project...

Note the communityhosting.net part.

There's only a small handful of ways for which this feat could have been accomplished.

  • Sonny Vleisides owns communityhosting.net. (unlikely)
  • He knows somebody who owns communityhosting.net and had them host the image. (very likely)
  • Somebody at communityhosting.net is representing Sonny Vleisides. (not outside the realm of possibility)
  • Sonny Vleisides has free access to communityhosting.net. (unlikely)

Although number two could be the most logical, it does beg the question as to why Sonny didn't simply post the image above on some free image provider anonymously.

635  Other / Off-topic / (BWLI Inc.) Barn Wood Labs International on: October 06, 2012, 05:30:23 AM
The name of this thread used to be 123 Elm Street.

I'm toying with the idea of starting an online furniture company, with all products built using reclaimed barn wood. Yes, it's been done before, but if all goes as planned, I'll be the first to exclusively except only Bitcoin as the sole payment option for our one-of-a-kind products.

I'm about to register the domain name, but before I do, I felt it important to ask the community--via a poll--which address I should use. If I opt for the 123 Elm Street address, I will also use a city name that doesn't have an Elm Street, along with using a different zip code that doesn't correspond with the chosen city, but will be fairly nearby. Chances are it shouldn't matter since I'm a trustworthy guy. In fact, I'm so trustworthy, there shouldn't be any problem whatsoever with accepting Bitcoin payments in advance.

The first line I'm planning on building is the Rassah Coffee Table, model number RCT256, similar to the one shown.

The pre-order price will only be $1,299, and if you're ever unhappy with your purchase, you can return it for a full refund, used toward the purchase price of another fine piece of reclaimed barn wood furniture of equal or greater value.

RCT256 Specs:

  • 1 large taxidermied wolf.
  • 80+ year old barn wood.
  • 18" Wide
  • 30" Long
  • 16" High

I chose to be conservative with the above specs, therefore a many customers may receive the RST256 with 2 medium sized taxidermied wolves, built with reclaimed barn wood older than 100 years old, and measuring 20" X 36" X 18" or larger.

I look forward to seeing the poll results so that I can get the company name registered. Meanwhile, I'm looking at the beginning of the week of Thanksgiving to start shipping out the first orders, but no later than Christmas.

Another product I'll planning on introducing is a reproduction of the following crate, but with a twist. When acting as an end table and plugged in, it will keep your favorite hot beverage at your desirable temperature.

Thanks for taking the poll and here's to hoping that you enjoy this thread.

To play, simply click on the last link within the sentence whereupon you'll land on another Wikipedia page, find a sentence containing only one link that tickles your fancy, then post it.

To show how the game is played, I'll start with a few examples, starting with: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilgamesh_epic

Quote
The story centers on a friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu.

Quote
Gilgamesh's close observation of rigor mortis and the slow decomposition of Enkidu's body provides the hero with the impetus for his quest for eternal life, and his visit to Utnapishtim.

Quote
Unfortunately, when Gilgamesh stops to bathe, it is stolen by a serpent, who sheds its skin as it departs.

Quote
The Ancient Egyptians associated it with Wadjet, one of their oldest deities as well as another aspect, Hathor.

Quote
The uraeus originally had been her body alone, which wrapped around or was coiled upon the head of the pharaoh or another deity.

Quote
There is evidence for this tradition even in the Old Kingdom during the third millennium BCE.

There is a little work involved such that you'll have to incorporate the link manually. Caution is advised, for this is addictive.

Enjoy!

~Bruno~

Click on Old Kingdom above and find a complete sentence on that Wikipedia which contains only one link and post it, making sure to included the link and that it is functional.

Feel free to include several finds within one post, or break them up to increase your post count.

To not further pollute the current Butterfly Labs thread with this I believe lies a connection, I'll dedicate a new thread here in Off-topic for my dwindling fan base to peruse.

There's a lot of players connected to Laissez Faire City, some of which committed suicide, died, didn't really die, or are active members of this forum. The follow ad appeared in The Economist in June of 1995, of which I glean from here: http://www.seasteading.org/2009/07/nation-founding-classics-laissez-faire-citys-ad-the-economist/

Feel free to discuss whatever related to LFC, and since we're in Off-topic, the tread may verve in who knows what direction, but as always I'll keep my wet noodle whip closeted, saving the 500 lashes for some other occasion.

I've reserved Post #2 for a synopsis if one is warranted. Post #3 is where I'll start penning to get this thread a rollin'.
