742  Other / Beginners & Help / What non-profit would you like to see accept Bitcoin? on: April 28, 2012, 04:20:37 PM
Welcome Newbies.

I offer up this thread to give you a place to post during your restrictiveness and, moreover, with your help, grow this list: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=78353.0

You can read more about Bitcoin 100 here.

What charitable organization would you like to see accept Bitcoin via their respective donation page?

743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin 100 Needs Suggestions (100 emails) on: April 28, 2012, 04:59:58 AM
@Admin: Would you be so kind as to allow this thread to stay in Discussion for 48 hours, whereupon you(s) or I will move it to Off-topic? It would be appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT: The goal is to send out 100 emails on Monday/Tuesday.

Due to a recent kick in the ass by a couple Bitcoin 100 supporters, I (we) need to send out more emails to non-profits to try to get them to embed a Bitcoin donation option onto their respective websites. This thread was created to solicit requests from supporters and non-supporters of Bitcoin 100 as to which non-profits you, the reader, would like us to approach. Please submit a name of any charity you feel should be consider. This thread is not meant as a discussion on any of the suggestions, but anybody wishing to express a dislike for any suggestion will be duly noted. That said, here's a few of my suggestions, which feel free to express if you truly don't think I shouldn't pursue any certain ones. Any post with a simple +1 would be nice as well.

~Bruno~

If there are no objections, I will be emailing the below after the 48 hours is up. The list will grow as the suggestions pour in.

744  Other / Off-topic / LadyBytes can do this! on: April 24, 2012, 06:06:12 PM
I was over in Newbies and discovered this: https://www.jottit.com/

Which led me to this: https://www.jottit.com/about

then this: http://flash.screeniac.com/jottit-dg/jottit-dg.html?TB_iframe=true&height=590&width=1050

and finally this: http://demogirl.com/

I firmly believe that LadyBytes could be Bitcoin's very own DemoGirl, for she's capable of representing any brand in a good light.

I love this thread! In fact, I think all these photos would look cool in a colossal slideshow. I've created one with the first 30+ images.

746  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Smartphones & Bitcoin on: April 19, 2012, 01:54:15 PM
At the onset, this thread has two purposes: Which smartphone should I get and to discuss various models and best uses in relation to Bitcoin, of which may become an ongoing dialog.

In the next few days, I'll be getting a smartphone, for I'll need it to better demonstrate Bitcoin to potential new users. Early last year, I did have the new Android HTC and Verizon, but discontinued the service due to not being able to use it in the middle of nowhere where the barns were located. I calculated that I lost tens of thousands of dollars due to lost sales those close to three weeks. It was even a nightmare to revert my primary number back to my Walmart Tracfone. I will keep the Tracfone, for it's the one that works most anywhere, and use the smartphone for the populated areas. Pretty smart of me, eh? But I digress.

That said, which smartphone should I consider, coupled with which carrier? I won't be streaming movies or watching many videos on the phone, but will probably do a lot of web surfing. That should be the extent of my bandwidth usage. Moreover, the device will be used and shown to others for Bitcoin demonstrations.

Which smartphone do you use and with which carrier? Are better phones and services coming out over the horizon, and how easy is it to change out one phone to another (with the same carrier, provided I'm not locked in a contract) when a better phone does hit the market?

Thank you, in advance.

748  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin + TEM = BitTem? on: April 16, 2012, 04:47:14 PM

A few months ago, an alternative currency was introduced in the Greek port city of Volos. It was a grass-roots initiative that has since grown into a network of more than 800 members, in a community struggling to afford items in euros during a deepening financial crisis.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17680904

Quote
From jewellery to food, electrical parts to clothes, everything here is on sale through a local alternative currency called TEM.

It works as an exchange system. If you have goods or services to offer, you gain credit, with one euro equivalent to one TEM.

"It's a very good idea because we need to make people realise we can all buy and sell something; we don't only need euros."

"We have reached the bottom of our lives and we now have to think in a different way," says Tasos, a vegetable-seller.

What are the chances of this Greek community, among others, reaching out to Bitcoin?

749  Other / Off-topic / The Monthly Bitcoin Newspaper on: April 15, 2012, 01:48:25 AM
I've just realized that there's not enough sources for bitcoiners to get their news. Therefore me, and my team of 50 followers, will publish one. The name of the newspaper will be The Monthly Bitcoin Newspaper because, quite frankly, that's what it will be.

The newspaper will be a physical paper--none of that online crap. We are currently accepting advertisers for the paper. The rate will be whatever you want to pay. Hell, we'll even do the copy for you. Subscription cost will be 1 BTC per year--13 issues. And if you order now, the second year is free. The first issue of the newspaper will be the May issue, thus allowing us plenty of time to get it out.

We are setting up the domain now and will have a vanity address hashed shortly, thus allowing us to take your money.

Please offer up any suggestions for the newspaper so that it can be the best it can be.

751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Pinterest & Bitcoin (now) vs Facebook on: April 09, 2012, 03:09:35 AM
From the looks of Pinterest's search results, it seems some bitcoiners have started to take advantage of this new social media craze: http://pinterest.com/search/?q=Bitcoin

I was taken aback when I read the following about the percentage of women who use Pinterest.

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Pinterest-143361306.html
Quote
Social media consultant Shauna Causey says over the past few months, Pinterest has exploded in popularity. Causey says there are about 20 million unique visitors a month and 80 percent of users are women.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss how Pinterest could be used to its fullest potential to bring further awareness to Bitcoin.

752  Other / Off-topic / WOTD on: April 08, 2012, 04:57:54 PM
Prior to joining this forum, I used to be one of those that posted #WOTD (Word of the Day) on Twitter. I felt it increased my word power. Felt, hell! It most certainly did. Often times I muse about twitting my newly found word to fellow tweeps, but lack of time no longer affords me to do such. Thank you, Bitcoin.

Unless, of course, I restart the practice here on BitcoinTalk, albeit a smaller group of cohorts, I believe such a thread would be most receptive. That said, today's WOTD (linked) is...

Apotropaic

In Ancient Greece, the Gorgoneion was originally a horror-creating apotropaic pendant showing the Gorgon's head.

I'll used http://dictionary.reference.com daily for my inspiration, although a handful of other sites offer up their own WOTD. My daily posts will consist of gleaning references from the internet that have incorporated the WOTD in text and images. I'll even Google it with the word "Bitcoin" to see if I'll be able to relay a prior or obscure connection. For instance:

Sweetie Belle by Apotropaic Puppet

Feel free to post and discuss any word that recently has tickled your fancy, coupled with commenting on a current or past WOTD on this thread.

One final thought: Consider incorporating the current WOTD in your very next post.

I, for one, am having trouble keeping track of all ladies associated with Bitcoin, now that they're infiltrating us. I'll start and maintain the list, and look forward to further contributions.

I would love to link their names to any URL they desire. Just ask on this thread or via a PM. I will kindly change any links, as well.

755  Other / Off-topic / [POLL] Which language for theymos via musical selections? on: April 01, 2012, 01:26:18 AM
I need to take two semesters of a foreign language, but I'm not sure which language to learn. My choices are French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and German. I've been leaning slightly toward Chinese; I don't really like the "sound" of Romance languages, and Chinese culture seems interesting. I've heard that Chinese is pretty difficult, though, and it probably wouldn't be as useful as Spanish. Also, I intend to learn Japanese someday, and I'm worried that knowing the Chinese readings of characters would mess me up (or would it actually help?).

Any advice?

To help our friend, theymos, make the best possible choice, I've started this poll, couple with providing the best music I could find, corresponded to each language option. To be fair, the list in the poll, as well as the musical selections below, are in alphabetical order, albeit I favor German as the most logical choice.

Plus two bonus tracks:

Hope you enjoy and vote, for theymos needs you.
