442  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is democracy even possible? on: May 24, 2013, 03:59:01 PM
Democracy is an ideal achieved by nobody, approachable ony through the most reprehensible elitism, ie, no women, slaves, unlanded, felons ect... that results in psuedoethically defendable oppression of minorities and marginalized voices.
Consensus decision making turns this on its head. Global consensus based bodies are neat-o.

Lets talk about transhumanism ITT!
A microprimer: humans can be immortal, and effectively unlimited in all ways using fututetechnology.
The gift economy is a very practical reversal of contemporary finance. Behaviorist ideas like positive reinforcement and operant conditioning can be read to imply many things about economics. Abstracting value allows for a more robust abililty to express quantified gratitude.

Anyone like comic books? I'm partial to DC myself, but who can argue with Wolverine?
So... The Hulk is a character who, say... gets punched in the face, or has a boulder or missile fall on him. You know what the hulk does? Hulk smash. This dood's superpower is to get stronger when assaulted. So yup.. cheers.

451  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin - powered by greed? on: May 24, 2013, 03:00:31 AM
Greed is the only way to motivate people, its an unfortunate reality.

Ah, I guess we better close down Wikipedia then. And all other open source programs for that matter.
Greed doesn't mean money. Greed means finding things that make you happy, and trying to obtain them. It is greedy to contribute to Wikipedia for the pleasure of proving people wrong on the Internet. It is greedy to contribute to open-source projects for the fame of having your name appear on the credits. It also looks pretty good on your resumé, improving your job prospects. Double greedy!

Quite.

453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Do You Explain Bitcoin to Non-Technical People? on: May 23, 2013, 03:11:25 PM
Non-technical people probably have infected computers.

See, that leads to even more problems. It's kind of making me wonder if maybe getting mainstream isn't going to be possible without getting people more educated on how computers work and ways to be safe.
Ignorance of the structure behind a casascius coin's worth might suffice for now, if that's the best safest medium so far.
Edit: The wallet and security is one subject, the blockchain is another, and exchanges might be the third.
454  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Do You Explain Bitcoin to Non-Technical People? on: May 23, 2013, 02:44:06 PM
Bitcoin is a balance in a public list called the blockchain. Really huge combinations of secret numbers own the balances. The short huge number (example) is your address, which recieves btc, and works like a 1$,50$, or 100$ bill, only with 0.00000001btc as the lowest denomination. The longer number is your private key, which lets you spend btc.
New btc are made when the blockchain is updated with compressed new records of btc spends.

Someone willing to revise this?
455  Other / Off-topic / Re: I want to sue Google on: May 23, 2013, 11:25:59 AM
User error.
Risk management is hard.
Google should fix that bug, calculating what the bug lost you and asking politely for some btc reimbursement. Some google pr bitcoiner programmer might talk to you to settle out of court.
456  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: so my electric bill came in on: May 23, 2013, 11:18:21 AM
If I mined with 5GH/s at my house in the Socialist Republic of Kalifornia, SCE would run me $720/month before AC costs.  Considering it was 90F today and will be 95F tomorrow, it would probably be $1k with AC running  Shocked

$170 is damn cheaper than most everything (except free)

You may get the police busting down the door expecting you to have been growing something inside the house...

I've got a total of 1 card may bump up to 2 at home the rest are at work where I don't pay for electricity Cheesy  Without mining I used to hit $300-350 in the summer of Texas prices.  After installing the 21SEER AC last year it never went over $150 ish Smiley

Has anyone actually ever INVITED the police to his mining rig saying "Hey, I noticed some of my friends got busted out of bed for their electricity bills and so on, could I invite an officer to my place for some coffee so we don't waste valuable government money on me NOT growing marihuana?"

I have actually thought about doing that one day. If my elec bills would climb to a level that might be considered dangerous, I would walk over there and tell them "Hey, I know that police raids tend do happen at 5.30, and to prevent someone busting my door in while i am sleeping, would you want to have some coffee at my place after your shift to see that you don't have to raid me? I would love to see your time rather used on someone that hurts our country."

Congress does Kim Jong -Il style inspections of american mining rigs, and outlaw dollars.

When considering relative scale, universal worldwide adoption will look slow, like a galaxy moving through space. Galaxies move pretty darn fast, though.

I appreciate what you do, Erik. Every time I go to write something to friends and family, I find that you've written essentially the same thing more succinctly than I ever could have. It's much appreciated. I can basically paraphrase you in everything I send to them. Just don't ever start copyrighting your work. Smiley

Devil worshipers cult Illuminati (Bilderberg Group) trying to ban Bitcoin.
They are moving in hard now.

video source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBOLhvuGcPE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Everyone must rise up to take down the Devil worshipers cult Illuminati also known as the (Bilderberg Group) asap!

I have an idea for how to do this... Make a coin that they HAVE to embrace.
The DEVILcoin.
A coin where the symbol is an upside down star/goat, then the word "Coin".

And I nominate Devcoin.
The Illuminati might like a coin with devil imagery and plans for developing mankind.
I would embrace this!

Can someone photoshop Venom->Coin?
I love you. Also the term is sigil of baphomet.

A fellow metalhead or just into occult?
Had trouble finding the thread to answer.
I like drugs and weirdness, the expression of rage, and old books. Kickass list of kickass metal: Drumcorps, Psyclon 9, Ministry, Dimmu Borgir, Marduk,Burzum, Hecate, Skinny Puppy, Anything under DTRASH, a lot of powerviolence, grindcore ect.
Crowley got me into the occult, Lovecraft, Robert Anton Wilson made it more abstract.
Anton LaVey really solidified it. I was at a point where my public highshcool was breaking a lot of laws and I needed something more solid than negative atheism, so I found Satanism.
460  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is being killed by governments and nobody seems to care! on: May 22, 2013, 01:19:18 PM

This is a theory and practice type of statement.

If I want to use bitcoin as a p2p payment system, I need to turn what value I have, which is in fiat, into bitcoin before I do anything.  The exchange rate that I get for my fiat is what puts an exchange value on the goods I want to buy.  So if I am spending an extra $8 on every bitcoin, then my goods are going to cost an extra $8 per bitcoin - compared to buying them with fiat in the first place!

Its the whole concept of financial regulations which created a need for bitcoin in the first place. If I have to tell a regulator who I am, what I am going to use my money on, and produce an audit trail to prove it, its going to take time. The only advantage left for bitcoin is the speed of making a purchase, and if the exchange transfer is taking forever, then I might be better off using fiat.

And, in the political paper shufflers world, that is exactly how you kill a competitor. Not through outright banning legislation, but through using paperwork treacle. It means they can always hold their hands up to any accusations of killing off with a simple it wasn't us, it was the free market that didn't want it.
The value of a dollar is as high as it takes to buy 1btc. These exchanges seem to me to be a way to trade in as many dollars as possible and as efficiently as possible until the dollar is regulated out of relevance.
That value, the oppurtunity to cash your $, is a limited time offer, and by definition, it will end before we expect it to.
The fall of the dollar has been eagerly anticpated.
