1  Other / Meta / Re: How to get Merit points on: March 29, 2018, 04:17:27 PM
I am really wandering, how to get Merit points, I think even though my posts are very on point and constructive and worth the merit points, I am not getting merit. What should I do?
Not all constructive posts earn merits, but the most constructive of them. Remember merits are scarce and thus users will only give them to posts which they consider of the highest quality.

P.S. Are there really good guys that are giving away merit points when they see that the posts are on point and well constructed?
For this, you can visit my thread: List of Threads Giving Away Merits
2  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Signature Advertisement Blindness on: March 25, 2018, 02:27:38 PM
-
It's almost the same for me, I see normal signatures, I do read most of them and sometimes click. But I ignore all signature ads.
I actually have this banner blindness not only here but in other sites too, I even find it weird that people complain about the ads in some sites Grin

So for all users that want their signatures read, don't make it look like a sig camp ad. Keep it plain and simple and more people will see it this way!
3  Other / Meta / Re: List of plagiarists [UPDATED: 18-March-2018] on: March 18, 2018, 06:17:12 PM
Sure it's definitely listed as "not allowed", but are you sure it's a bannable offense and not just the thread being deleted? I'm really not sure.
I can't find where I saw it, but I believe that it even leads to a perma ban. Maybe a moderator can confirm this.
4  Other / Meta / Re: List of plagiarists [UPDATED: 18-March-2018] on: March 18, 2018, 05:43:22 PM
Also, my goal is not only for mods to delete the posts, but probably also a source of members for campaign managers to add to their blacklist.
Plagiarism is a bannable offense by the rules, so plagiarists will probably get banned and not only their posts deleted if their posts were plain copy/paste.

33. Posting plagiarized content is not allowed.[e]
....
33. This includes both copying parts or the entirety of other users' posts or threads and copying content from external sources (e.g. other websites) and passing it as your own.
5  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Blockchain Download Time on: March 18, 2018, 03:57:02 PM
Will be interesting to see how big it gets, with the increased popularity of bitcoin.
The size of the blockchain has nothing to do with Bitcoin adoption. Blockchain's size increases with every block added to the blockchain, which usually happens every ten minutes. And each block of 1 MB size increases the size of the blockchain by 1 MB.

7  Economy / Services / Re: Yahoo62278 Sig & Avatar Campaign(High merit required) on: March 18, 2018, 07:47:02 AM
Look Guys, I don't want to be rude, but if you "will" continue this kind of bad habit, applying in campaigns that is not asking for new participants, then you guys might be blacklisted or tagged by manager yahoo62278 Himself and any other managers. And How can He hire/accept you if in the first place you are not reading? How can you guys obey the rules and regulations if you don't even read. common guys, you stayed here for months and you need to know and have sense with the situation. If a campaign is looking for new participants managers themselves will announce it. announce it. announce it.
sorry for my words. But Free service is well appreciated.

I guess it would have been better if Yahoo62278 announced that the campaign is full (assuming it's full). He actually said that he won't be accepting anyone else before the first week payment indicating he may accept someone after that. Also, users updating the list of signature campaigns consider it open.
I know some users still apply for closed/full campaigns, but it's not their fault this time.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC mining becoming less profitable, many countries not allowing BTC mining on: March 17, 2018, 07:56:38 AM
And this will only get worse as the mining difficulty will rise.
-snip-
Do you think mining difficulty will be brought down (I know this option is almost impossible)?
You got the wrong idea about difficulty, with less miners mining difficulty will decrease. It's a totally possible thing and it's related to the network's total hash power.

That being said, no country banned mining due to high electricity usage. In fact, banning mining, although leading to centralization, would increase its profitability, so the whole OP doesn't make any sense.

EDIT: If you want miners' opinions you should post in the mining board, the spam in this board makes quality posts harder to be seen.
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lack of views on new posts on: March 16, 2018, 01:52:41 PM
Does only the topic/title itself defines how many bitcointalkers view and click on my post (e.g. in Altcoin Disucssions) or does my status influence my post's visibility? I barely get a view and I'm not sure what the reason is. Besides probably that there are hundreds of posts every day and you can get lost quite quickly.

Any tips on how I can get some answers/discussions for topics I post (let's assume they're interesting  Cheesy)?
Your status has nothing to do with how many members see your post.
The two things that mostly matter are the title and content of your post. An interesting title will attract users to click on your post and a high quality content would make them want to engage into discussion with you, thus replying to your post. And with every reply your thread is bumped to the first page for more people to be able to see it.
10  Other / Meta / Re: Deleted message on: March 16, 2018, 08:23:01 AM
We also do not tolerate threads from 2012 being necrobumped by shitposting newbies hence why that post and all the ones before and after it were deleted.
Rather than delete posts pre-2012 or about the time I think it will be more profitable for the forums if those threads are just locked up but not deleted for history and research purposes. For me, I like going back to the caves.

They didn't delete the whole thread, I guess he meant that they deleted the post that pumped the thread and every post that followed it.
11  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin wallet and bitcoin segwit wallet on: March 15, 2018, 01:19:26 PM
-snip-
-snip-
Thanks for the correction guys, I'll edit my post so that it doesn't show wrong info.

The issue is that some wallets and service providers (exchanges, gambling sites, webwallets etc) do not support Native "bc1" addresses at this time, so you can't send from these services to a "bc1" address... As they are likely to flag a "bc1" address as invalid and refuse to send to it.
I guess this is why I confused things up.
So just to get things totally clear, services already support sending to P2SH addresses and that's why they all support sending to nested SegWit addresses?
12  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Adoption and the Scalability Problem. What can normal users do to help? on: March 15, 2018, 10:26:06 AM
The non-technical side of the community can help with their support. The wallet providers and exchanges will only make decisions to implement new technologies, if there is a huge demand for it. You can write emails to these third party services to ask for these technologies. When there are enough people doing this, they would not have a choice in the matter, they have to go with the demand or they will lose market share in a highly competitive market.

Leave the technical side for the experts and concentrate on the things that you can change. <Consumer demands>
Thanks, that's exactly what I was asking about.

Please spend an hour of your time reading -----> a flash of insights on lightning network you will be learning everything about the LN.
Thanks for the good read. It's definitely going to be a new era for bitcoin if Lightning Network is as perfect as described in this article. I hope it's adoption won't take so long when it's out of beta, which I know will.

14  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin wallet and bitcoin segwit wallet on: March 14, 2018, 04:29:05 PM
Whats the difference between btc wallet and btc wallet with segwit? .... Is it better to use the wallet with segwit?
The difference is that transactions made from SegWit addresses cost less fees, so yes, it's better to use a SegWit wallet. And now the mempool is empty and fees are at their lowest so it is a great time to transfer your BTC to a SegWit address.

Is it possible to transfer btc from my btc wallet to btc segwit wallet?
To answer this question, you have to know that there are two types of SegWit addresses.
 1)  P2SH SegWit nested addresses that start with '3' and as others mentioned not all addresses that start with '3' are SegWit nested but all SegWit nested addresses do start with '3'.
 2)  Bech32 native SegWit addresses that start with 'bc1'.
And of course there are the legacy non-SegWit addresses that start with '1'.

So what's the difference?
Bech32 native SegWit addresses are new and are not supported by all wallets and services yet. The result is that you may not be able to send your BTC to a native SegWit address unless you import your private keys into a wallet that support this type of addresses. While all wallets and services support sending to P2SH SegWit nested addresses.
15  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Adoption and the Scalability Problem. What can normal users do to help? on: March 13, 2018, 09:57:22 PM
LN is not activated yet.

It's not a soft fork, so it doesn't activate. Your statement therefore doesn't make any sense
So what's the right term to use here? And why the term 'activate' can only be used for soft forks?
English isn't my first language so I want you to help me a bit here :3

Lightning is already running, but still in a beta form. The UX is fairly clunky and there are potential bugs in the various implementations. It's not ready for mainstream use yet.
I get that, if it was ready it would be "out?" (since I can't say activated :p ) already.

Even when LN is activated I don't know if it would solve things up.

The transaction capacity of Lightning is only really limited by it's BTC capacity & it's routing resolution. As long as the incentives work out, it could be so widely used that scaling will rival incumbent payment networks (Mastercard, Amex etc) and completely eclipse SWIFT. How much more capacity could Bitcoin need than that?
I read that:
Quote from: Bitcoin wiki
Lightning is 180 times (17,900%) more efficient than basic Bitcoin.
But please help me with this question, will LN be available for the normal user with a small internet bandwidth? or does it require certain setup?
16  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Adoption and the Scalability Problem. What can normal users do to help? on: March 13, 2018, 09:28:16 PM
Have you looked at the mempool lately?

https://jochen-hoenicke.de/queue/#1,1y

It's as empty as it can get. So no, we are far from having real scalability problems. These big ass peaks were obviously abnormal behaviour, either be by exchanges not properly batching transactions, Roger Ver and Jihan Wu spamming the network, and so on. Add in segwit and the mempool is empty. Transactions are now fast and cheap.

We don't need to rush things in order to accommodate a "mainstream demand" which simply doesn't exist, otherwise BCash would have full blocks as well Bitcoin itself. Censorship resistant and robust of the system > rushing things scaling wise.
The last "peak" lasted for months, even being from spamming the network, it did negatively affect bitcoin, and increasing the tx capacity would make such spamming attacks harder to achieve and less effective. I'm not asking for bitcoin to handle as many transactions as paypal, but I am hoping for such peaks to never happen.
I have near to zero technical knowledge so I can't say if LN development is going faster or slower than it should be. But I can't see how a faster adoption of SegWit would be "rushing things". SegWit is fully developed and it's the responsibility of wallets, exchanges and other services to start supporting it.

If you want to help learn to code and drop good BIPs
I might actually do it :p
I have some knowledge in programming languages like C++ and java, but I don't know what you meant here by "learn to code", do you know where can I start?
17  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Bitcoin Adoption and the Scalability Problem. What can normal users do to help? on: March 13, 2018, 06:49:37 PM
I have reached a conclusion that Bitcoin has almost got to the highest adoption it can sustain and we can't get to a higher adoption without solving the scalability problem first. As:
Higher adoption ----> more transactions per second ----> higher tx fee/time ----> inability to do smaller transactions ----> less adoption.

We can see this happening when Steam stopped accepting bitcoin in December last year after the high surge in its transaction fees.

What I find weird is how slow things are going. SegWit adoption is low and LN is not activated yet. Even when LN is activated I don't know if it would solve things up.

What can we do to help?
What comes to my mind is that we should start using SegWit addresses for all our transactions. I think if more bitcoin users show interest in SegWit and LN it would encourage their adoption among wallets and other services.
Any other suggestions on how we as a community can help solve the scalability problem?

PS: Though technically it's not a technical question but I preferred to post it here and get useful replies rather than posting in bitcoin discussion and having to deal with all the spam.
18  Economy / Services / Re: A simple bitcoin Q/A. Learn new and interesting stuff about bitcoin. on: March 12, 2018, 09:50:03 PM
Question: What does double spend mean?
I'm so sleepy right now to make sure my answer is accurate but here I go:
Double spend is to spend the same coins in 2 different transactions. It's mostly attempted when the 1st transaction doesn't have any confirmations yet, because it becomes much harder to successfully do a double spend after each confirmation.
Double spend is usually attempted when someone makes a transaction by mistake, when a transaction gets stuck because of a low fee, or of course for fraud.
There are several ways to attempt a double spend, what I know of them:
Including a higher fee in the 2nd transaction (the one you want to get it confirmed faster), asking a miner to include your transaction in the next block, these two methods work for unconfirmed transactions.
Double spend can also happen in 51% attacks or similar attacks where the attacker has high hash power. In this case the 1st transaction could have a couple of confirmations and still get reversed. Though this kind of double spend is not worth it unless the amount of transaction is so high.

Correct or wrong answer I'd be happy to receive feedback  Grin

I found that some links were wrong, edited the OP everything should be in its place now.

Nice idea and solid thread, bookmarked it... Hehe. Makes it easy for people who want to do find and do good work to rank up their profile. There are a lot of complaints from newbies about the merit system being unfair. With this they can do solid work and get merited. I myself will be joining in, will soon hit Hero member soon... Grin
Thanks! If you by any chance find a thread that I haven't listed be sure to post it in the replies!
20  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 12, 2018, 02:17:33 PM
Congratz for the winners and thanks for the feedback! much appreciated.
Regarding the signature, I actually liked the old one better. IMO a simple signature would draw more attention. I feel like if a signature is too complicated some people (like me Grin) would assume that it's a paid ad and would just ignore it.

Nicely done btw, I see this challenge took much of your time.
