I've finally persuaded wetsuit to take a serious look at LN. It came from a discussion we had recently about our dust problem (229 BTC that's too expensive to consolidate).
First, we'll add Lightning Network deposits and after that's been running for a while we'll start charging a very small fee for sub 30,000 deposits via the blockchain to pay for the consolidation.
Wow, now that's some good progress Freebitco.in is making. Also, how about adding internal transfers as well. That way users who trust each other can deposit their tokens in a single transaction and then doing free internal transfer to themselves. I don't know how it would benefit freebitco.in but it would certainly benefit it's users and eventually increase the userbase as well. Internal transfer between the freebitco accounts will really help and in some cases may save transactions fee. If you have brothers, sisters or wife having freebitco account, then due to free internal transfer, they can move their earnings in one account and withdraw it once saving multiple tx fees. Lets hope this feature is built soon. We will not enable internal transfers because we can't prove we paid them. That's the great thing about the blockchain if there is a dispute between 2 users, one claiming the other one didn't pay them and the other blaming us I can show them the transaction ID. |

He was very cautious about it being stable and reliable enough. There being enough people using it to make it worthwhile and all the complications of implementing it. This isn't something that's going to happen immediately because there is a lot of work involved in making sure it is both reliable and secure. |

I'll gladly open a Lightning Network channel to freebitco.in once the option becomes available. As to sweeping the dust, can't just you just sprinkle a small amount via every withdrawl? It might take a little while unless you wait for an opportunity when fees are low and you can sweep some/most dust in a series of transactions. It is just a question of how much of the value we are prepared to pay to move it. If it costs more than 0.5% of the value then we leave it where it is. Because we consolidate 50 deposits at a time and apply that 0.5% limit to the total value that means bigger deposits pay to sweep smaller ones. My plan is that after LN is active we can deduct 400 Sats from new dust deposits and that will pay to consolidate itself + one old dust deposit. |

Watch how FB will become "Free Fun Tokens" as the price of bitcoin rises then.  That's not going to happen. They should have implemented the Lightning Network to prevent that route from happening imo. As you already stated it could be to do with NYAG. There must have been some reason that is was done now rather than before or waiting until November. Most loans accrue interest periodically, and if a company cannot produce returns (adjusted for risk) from investing the money that could be used to repay a loan that is greater than the interest rate, the company is incurring interest expenses for no reason. I am not familiar with bitfinex's intimate financial details, however, I would find it hard to believe that bitfinex is able to invest $550 million for 6 months, and reliably earn a risk-adjusted return greater than the interest rate they were paying.
The only thing I could possibly see them using that kind of money on is capital for their OTC trading desk, but I am not sure it would generate that much revenue.
They are affiliated companies so it's effectively an internal loan and they are paying interest to themselves. I would think it highly likely they were not able to do something to earn more than 0% in it. This looks more of a matter of internal accounting than any great mystery. |

I am curious as to why it took them so long to do this considering they raised a billion dollars in early 2019 that I was under the understanding was going to be used to repay this loan.

What's the deal with FUN tokens? Did freebitco.in implement these tokens because bitcoin became too high in value? If so maybe implementing LN would have been a better idea. I admit LN is too much trouble for the devs maybe that's why avoided it.

We'll always be a Bitcoin site but we *might* launch other sites in the future. Remember the original reason for Freebitco.in was to be a faucet for the promotion of Bitcoin (BTC) and to secure it's future to provide a use case for the BTC token.  The world has changed a lot since 2013. Will we be able to convert back and forth between "FUN" and "BTC" on Freebitco.in ...or will we be forced to use those 3rd party exchanges? I only saw this now, with the launch of the Signature campaign.. so I am a bit late to the party.  At the moment you can buy tokens on the site or anywhere else you want. From March 15th you will be able to both buy and sell tokens on the site. You will also be able to deposit and withdraw tokens you have sourced from elsewhere. As we are not an exchange you will not be able to buy from us to withdraw or deposit to sell to us. |

Can someone clarify the situation on forecasting the price of Bitcoin?
I understand that the earlier the bet is made, the greater the coefficient, but let's say if the total prize pool by the end of the month is only 0.5 bitcoin. And at this stage, I see that if my prediction is correct, my winnings will be x157 (which is more than the total prize pool). What pool will the winnings be covered from?
