301  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast announces specs for new ASIC: 400GH/s on: July 21, 2014, 01:48:31 PM
Does anyone have a small amount (5-10) of golden nonce chips to sell?

A guy I know has some technicians at hand who could design an asic board.

Are they even worth the trouble anymore? Even ASICMiner's current gen 3 chip is selling at cost because it's not that efficient anymore. These chips have in in the making for a year now. They're garbage now!
302  Other / Off-topic / Re: Blackphone - are you buying one? on: July 21, 2014, 01:43:56 PM
Blackphone seems shitty and oveerpriced compared to Oneplusone:

Blackphone is powered by a >2 GHz quad-core SoC and features a full set of premium features, such as a 4.7" HD IPS screen, LTE, HSPA+, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 16GB of storage, >8MP primary camera with flash and 1.3MP front camera, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11n WiFi, GPS, and more. Certain specifications are subject to change and may be adjusted prior to shipping the first phones later this year.

Oneplusone has a full 1080px HD 5.5-inch screen, 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM, 64GB of internal memory, CyanogenMod 11s Custom OS, 13 megapixel (rear) and 5 megapixel (front) camera – Sony Exmor sensor, Dual LED and 4K video support.

Blackphone is 629$
Oneplusone is 350$

I think you know which one I'm going to take...

So people are still comparing phones or anything in terms of the pure performance specs. This has always been pretty stupid. It says very little about the actual quality of the components, the quality of the surrounding hardware and the actual performance and experience provided by the operating system!
303  Other / Off-topic / Re: 69.6969 BTC Loan on: July 21, 2014, 01:41:39 PM
Thought it was real for a second. That would have been the funniest thing if some rich guy send that for fun.

Well there are people who just send about 800 BTC to freaking Mark Karpeles magic mountain company whilst it is already in midst of bankruptcy! I'm still amazed that that guy got his BTC back!
304  Other / Off-topic / Re: Happy 45th Moon Landing Anniversary, Earthlings! on: July 21, 2014, 01:39:43 PM
There will be always some kind of conspiracy theory about this event. It's always popular to doubt anything.
Nevertheless, this is one of the biggest achievements in the history of mankind!

It is! Especially if you consider how close it was to the invention of the plane! If we progressed with that kind of speed technologically, who knows where we could be today!
305  Other / Off-topic / Re: New geological survey of Mars! Any lava flow under the mantle of Mars? on: July 21, 2014, 01:37:03 PM
I was under the impression that the core of Mars was solid. Is there still active lava flow under the mantle of Mars?

Proof that Mars is hollow by Dank in 5... 4... 3...

Ha, you made my day! That guy really is creative in describing a hollow earth the other day! Umm, what happens if we should find out that the moon is hollow, too? Would our bitcoin mission fail?  Cry
306  Other / Off-topic / Re: Totally Off-Topic! on: July 21, 2014, 12:00:22 PM
So I hear bitcoin been stuck around the 650$ mark for a while now, hmm where is the 1k+ hype?! Oh Bitcoin is the Martian currency!

Hello there Mr. from March! We're already back where you were back then. Just a word of advice: Sell your stash and re-buy at the mid of April for $360 and something!
307  Other / Off-topic / Re: Vicks First Defence CURES COMMON COLD on: July 21, 2014, 11:56:58 AM
More like it's excellent as masking the symptoms. There isn't a cure.

Yeah exactly. Although I do wonder why the cold isn't spreading nevertheless afterwards then? I guess in most cases it's just chance or luck and the body (not weakened by the cold) was able to fight off the cold effectively.
308  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you think she is pretty? on: July 21, 2014, 11:55:22 AM
Omg, so much trolling in this thread. OP's girl has a weenie too? Does it matter what others may think?

If she does, I would jump at the chance to date her.

People are just afraid that their sexuality gets shattered or questioned Smiley I never exactly got why, just make out with whoever you like as long as there's adult consent it should be perfectly fine!
309  Other / Off-topic / Re: Anyone got Tor working for Linux? on: July 21, 2014, 11:52:36 AM
Didn't the FBI capture the main TOR server a while ago...?

I don't use TOR, used to though. After I read the main server was captured, I decided against using it in the future. On Ubuntu, just run the bundle. That should be enough to get it working.

That was Tor mail and not the actual Tor browser.

At least you're on a list as soon as you search for the Tor browser or tor in general I guess. I always wondered if this whole thing wasn't just some trick or trap to quickly capture all people using Tor and thus exactly know who to observe  Grin
310  Other / Off-topic / Re: Cheese and? on: July 21, 2014, 11:50:58 AM
Eww... say goodbye to your coronary arteries I guess Grin Doesn't exactly sound very healthy. And I personally also don't care for the ingredients. But that's just my taste and it's totally fine if you like it Smiley
311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: theoretically there are 21 mil btcs, in reality, many bitcoins are lost on: July 21, 2014, 11:48:18 AM
It's safe to assume that from now and into the future the number of lost Bitcoins will not increase very much, because in the past people didn't think much of Bitcoins and formatted drives without thinking twice.

I agree with this very much. LOL

Yeah, it is true, people who buy BTC with their hard earned money nowadays know about the real world price of them so they just don't lose track of them. But it'll happen today and even tomorrow, since there'll always be people who just don't pay attention and format their hard-drive, don't have backups, lose their phones, etc...
BTC will always be lost! Imagine having the only remaining BTC while all the others are lost!

True! It'll get less, that's for sure. At least as long as bitcoin continues to gain value! But coins are bound to get lost by definition. Once really lost, they can't effectively be recovered. This is bound to happen at some point and in some quantities.
312  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: GHash Commits to 40% Hashrate Cap at Bitcoin Mining Summit #ghash #summit on: July 21, 2014, 11:44:48 AM
This is BS. There is no way to make sure that they will stick to the 40% cap. What if they launch another secret mining pool with some 15-20% of the hash power, while retaining some 30-40% in GHash?

Yeah, it's pure marketing. Promises, promises, promises Smiley They really need to show some concrete efforts in tackling the problem. The thing is, I can't really think of a way to prove you don't own a certain share of the network! Is there one?

Yeah the whole CoinSummit London conference wasn't concrete enough. I think all blocks found by ghash should be given to me and I'll send it out to all their users.

The what? Grin Just to go along with your vivid idea: How could this possibly eliminate the threat of a 51% attack on the bitcoin network to begin with?
313  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dell.com now accepts bitcoin! on: July 21, 2014, 11:43:18 AM
Dell? Whoa, they ARE bigger than Overstock and DISH combined. Is it really just the media hype? Maybe many companies just don't exactly know what do make of bitcoin and decide to better embrace it to avoid missing the train choo choo!
314  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Bitcoins are not stolen .. on: July 21, 2014, 11:41:30 AM
On the topic of defeating keyloggers, I have a text file containing bits of my passphrase mixed amongst random text. When I want to enter the passphrase, I open the text file and copy & paste using the mouse the relevant pieces into the password field.

I know how most key loggers work, and most do not capture the clipboard contents.

That sounds awfully dangerous. How can you be sure that the majority of keyloggers or even backdoor malware actually don't transmit your clipboard contents? This seems like one of the most dangerous or naive methods I've seen  Grin

316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could the US government gain control of Bitcoin? on: July 21, 2014, 11:37:02 AM
This has been eating at me so I figured I would ask you all what you think about this. I don't know if this has been talked about before and if so Im sorry.

We all know the government is actively watching bitcoin emerge as a legitimate currency source. I'm sure they are in talks about it behind closed doors. Which we would know to lead to think tanks about regulation. What if the government was planning to mine a large portion of the coin themselves. Im not talking about buying a room full of 6th miners. Im talking about them using something like these NSA datacenters. Building their own high tech hardware that would put our best miners to shame. Would it be possible for the government to miner a large enough portion of the wealth that they would hold  controlling interest?

Yes, definitely. They'd just need to develop fast enough ASICs or buy them in bulk. It'd be not that expensive as you'd might think, although I can't provide any concrete numbers now. If they suddenly had 90% of the network, bitcoin would become worthless. They could afford that, they're the freaking US government!
317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Fraud? on: July 21, 2014, 11:35:04 AM
So miners are doing the actual ledger confirmations?

It's not the core bitcoin s/w?

I thought bitcoin core participated in the public ledger daisy chain.

Just like more robust wallets like electrum the server version, isn't that a ledger node?

It doesn't make sense for miners to be doing all the transactions, since there's a limit of coin, that would mean when the last coin was mined there's no transactions.

Is that really the scenario? Bitcoin will only last until all 21 million coins have been mined?

Well, bitcoin has definite rules everyone has to abide by (no double spends, confirmation times, etc.) If someone violates those rules, their transactions simply won't be accepted by the network. If someone mines a block with such a faulty transaction it would be rejected as well, and thus the miner wouldn't get any block/fee rewards.
The calculations (we need those fast ASICs for) are merely a technique to limit the amount of blocks that can be mined and help to decide when a state of the blockchain (a new block) will be accepted by the whole network.
318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Using 2FA to guard against Bitcoin theft. Do you back up your 2FA codes? on: July 21, 2014, 11:32:06 AM
That is a pretty cool idea. I often think about what happens if I lose my iPhone and can't access the codes. I keep it backde up in iTunes so I feel pretty secure but it makes me a bit nervous to think about. I keep very little bitcoin online, but I do use 2FA to withdrawal my purchases from coinbase etc.

Are you aware that 2FA codes aren't stored in iTunes backups unless they're set to be encrypted? The 2FA information are stored in the iOS keychain, which isn't stored in unencrypted backups for obvious reasons. So you should either encrypt your backups (checkbox in iTunes) or write your codes down!
319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin Is More Than a Made-Up Investment Bubble on: July 21, 2014, 11:30:16 AM
Well, it does provide new features and aspects no other currency provided before. Of course it has some Ponzi-like characteristics in so far as early adopters profit from it. But that's just the incentive people need to join Bitcoin. Why should they join something if it's just risky without actually providing any benefit?
320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is the Real Reason people are interested in Bitcoin on: July 21, 2014, 11:28:18 AM
Money is a very strong incentive to get involved with things. If it wasn't for the stories about enormous gains over a relatively small time frame, bitcoin wouldn't have received that much exposure. That's also the reason why those coins that are directly backed by the USD 1:1 are going to fail.
