401  Other / Off-topic / Re: How do you think the universe will end? on: October 29, 2014, 11:36:15 AM
I've read up on number 2--the big freeze but can't really wrap my head around the physics of this. Would anyone care to explain like I'm 5 the theory behind the big freeze aka, heat death of the universe?

Yeah, this is the most popular theory at the moment I think, I'm no astrophysicist but I'll explain what I know.

Historically, the "Big Crunch" was what most scientists believed. This involved a "Big Bang", an expansion of the universe, then after a while the force of gravity would slow the expansion down. Eventually the force of gravity would overcome the initial force of expansion, causing the universe to begin contracting. This contraction would accelerate, ending in a spectacular "Big Crunch", with all the matter in the universe trying to occupy a single point. Some then speculated that another "Big Bang" would occur, and the cycle would continue.

However, in 1998 the Hubble Telescope observed some distant supernovae which showed that, a few billion years ago, the universe was actually expanding more slowly than it is today. Many more experiments have shown this to be true - The universe seems to not only be still expanding, the expansion is actually accelerating. Now this threw the "Big Crunch" theory out of the window, and caused scientists to make new theories involving something called "dark energy". Although no-one really knows what dark energy is, most scientists believe it's a mysterious energy which repels matter, overcoming the force of gravity (which attracts matter to other matter), and causing the accelerating expansion of the universe.

With these discoveries, it seems that the "Big Freeze" or heat-death of the universe is a likely scenario. In this theory, all matter keeps getting further and further apart, and eventually reaches maximum entropy, where all the energy is spread evenly throughout the whole universe. In such a state, there would be no heat or light, as there wouldn't be enough concentrated energy to sustain the processes. It would be very dark and cold.

However there is the "Big Rip" theory, which I admittedly know very little about, which predicts that the accelerating expansion of the universe will cause it to tear itself apart as a result of dark energy becoming stronger over time. The idea (I think) is that as dark energy gets stronger, it begins to tear apart smaller and smaller objects, until it is strong enough to tear apart subatomic particles, in essence destroying all matter in the universe.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I feel like I have a better grasp of the concept now.

I'll be going as Bob from Bob's Burgers. My girlfriend will be dressed as Linda and we're going to try our best to stay in character for the duration. Happy Halloween everyone. Have fun and stay safe Smiley

Man that was such a messed up situation for Gary Webb. Imagine trying to do the best at your job and being slandered and outed as a hack and liar from everyone you knew. That's essentially what happened to this guy. Everyone thought he has delusional, paranoid and sick in the head. He knew the truth all a long. The CIA basically hired thugs to ruin his life. Pretty scary if you ask me.

The bulk of this article relies on the misery index. This all attributes to both the inflation and unemployment rate. Considering that this index has no precedent of predicting anything in the past, then I see no reason to rely on it in the present. Besides, there are TONS and TONS of other factors to think about and not just inflation/unemployment.
405  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Does Bitcoin have the potential to evade capital controls? on: October 29, 2014, 10:13:36 AM
If Bitcoin would get controled by the government, it will be just like any other currency.
That is what makes Bitcoin so special in my opinion

But the thing is Bitcoin still CAN be controlled by governments. Remember the Chinese government backlash against BTC late last year? All it takes is for a government to ban it outright. Sure, there will still be users on the black market but the mainstream will see it as something illegal and something that is not worth their time. That is how governments can control Bitcoin.
406  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Cops abuse and attempt to abduct 12 year old girl, state “You’re a prostitute" on: October 29, 2014, 10:08:16 AM
The U.S. police force is a cesspool of corruption mired in bad policies and bad attitudes. The people who became cops from my high school were the ones that enjoyed bullying others and being able to hold some false semblance of power. The cops in America are given far too much power for the amount of training and qualifications they possess.
407  Economy / Economics / Re: Is the US economy going up or down? on: October 29, 2014, 10:02:47 AM
The U.S. based economy is definitely going down. To get a good indication of this--just look at the current gas prices. Oil prices generally present a clear indicator of how well people think an economy is doing. Gas prices up = people using their cars to go to places to spend money, hence the demand for gas increases. Reverse that and you have the current trend that is happening right now.

This is an over-simplified explanation but if you want a better explanation just ask.

You should use that money and invest in yourself. Investing in yourself would mean learning new skills, getting an education--things that employers look for. You haven't given us much info on your academic standing but from what I can gather you are just graduating high school? If that's the case, focus on school. Learn something you like. Be a bus boy or dishwasher to support yourself and then use the money to re-invest in yourself. Making yourself more marketable to employers is the end-game.
410  Other / Off-topic / Re: How you drink your coffee? on: October 29, 2014, 08:31:35 AM
I like drinking flavored coffee personally. With a lot of cream and a tiny bit of sugar so I can still taste the flavors. I'm actually cutting back on coffee because I've been getting more and more antsy at night due to drinking a ton of it during the day time.
411  Other / Off-topic / Re: Being part of a tekkie Commune anyone? on: October 29, 2014, 07:53:03 AM
Very interesting. Have you guys considered starting a garden to grow your own food to become really self-sufficient? What kind of rules does this commune have? i.e. what happens when someone gets out of line?

I've always been interested in projects like these. I'm currently seriously considering living out the open sea on a boat a few years down the road when work/time allows.
412  Other / Off-topic / How do you make friends after college? on: October 29, 2014, 07:46:40 AM
While I was in college, making friends was pretty easy. It came naturally because I lived in the dorms and my roommates and I always hung out. There were also a lot of social events like school clubs, etc. Now that I've graduated and moved across the country for my job, I find that making friends is extremely difficult. My co-workers are at least 10 years my senior. I don't really have any peers to connect with on a more personal level.

How did you guys make friends outside of college/school?

I've been having trouble the past 4 days. I will wake in the middle of the night and stay awake for around 30 minutes which really disrupts my REM schedule. Do you have any techniques or suggestions that might remedy this? Getting groggier and groggier every day.

415  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Cops stealing $50k on: October 21, 2014, 03:21:34 AM
This happens in Texas daily. Cops use the "War on Drugs" as an excuse to seize innocent people's money. Then when they try to recover the money, it is stuck in bs government red tape. This should be considered a crime if you ask me. I couldn't get away with forcing someone to give me their money, why should the cops get a free pass?

416  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thoughts on microchip implants? on: October 21, 2014, 03:17:42 AM
I think microchip implantation will inevitably be the status quo in the distant future. As for the near future, I don't see it being implemented with public fears of government vouyerism. I myself would gladly volunteer for a microchip implant if it can let me do things such as monitor my health or allow me some other form of convenience that would make up for the intrusion. I think the future of humanity will move towards automation and nanotechnology. Implantation will then be par the course for the common human.

I'm pretty excited. $6,800 is extremely cheap considering what you get. I'm just a little concerned about 3 wheels. Is anyone experienced or familiar with car design who can give an opinion on what this would do to the handling of the car? More prone to fish-tail? Hydroplane dangers?
