121  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [Blacklist] of unreliable, 'taint proclaiming' Bitcoin services / exchanges on: July 26, 2022, 08:39:19 PM

Perhaps we could also start a whitelist of online businesses such as gift card sellers which are known to pay no attention to taint and freely accept mixed or coinjoined coins, etc.

Yes, fight censorship by using businesses that accept BTC as BTC.

Nice one, El-dude (#622602).

Energy, we'll be hearing about that the rest of our lives.
123  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which hardware wallet to buy? on: July 22, 2022, 12:15:26 AM
...

Just speaking for myself, I like the Trezor Model T and the BitBox02 (BTC only version).  I only buy BTC, no Alts.

For me the Trezor is slightly easier to use.  The BitBox has coin control.  Both allow secondary passwords, both seem reasonably sturdy.  Both use apps on a PC.  Both seem to be excellent hardware wallets.

I have also used the Ledger Model S (soon after it came out), but I liked it less than the Trezor and Bitbox.

Dabs has raised a great point re OPSEC while out and about on private business.

A mask, hat, sunglasses (try to partly cover ears, distinctive for every person) and a burner (with your main phone Faraday'ed or back home).

Other simple ideas very welcome...

Edit:  Maybe learning some of those old spy tricks re OPSEC may make a comeback.
125  Other / Archival / Re: Most crypto-friendly economies in the world on: July 18, 2022, 06:12:47 PM
The data they collected seems like a joke, how can El Salvador and Central African Republic who accept Bitcoin as a legal tender aren't a crypto friendly lol.

The research obviously had some other criteria than that Bitcoin is legal tender in a country as an important feature when it comes to the status of a crypto-friendly country. Obviously, more focus is being devoted to the overall status according to crypto laws and adaptation, probably also security when it comes to investing.

There is no data for my country at all, although in any case it could be considered quite crypto-friendly considering the number of physical crypto exchanges without KYC for amounts up to even 2000 EUR per transaction, 0% tax if you sell crypto 2 years after purchase and the fact that you can buy almost anything you can imagine with Bitcoin (online).

They should have perhaps included another variable in their study.

I have bought at BTCATMs in parts of Europe.  Switzerland and Austria have very friendly BTCATMs, in that there is no KYC for smaller amounts (250 euro for Austria, IIRC), and there are lots of the machines in those two countries.  I have not been to Poland, but coinatmradar.com shows a lot of machines there as well.

Germany, on the other hand, has a very low number of BTCATMs.  The UK used to have a lot, but their regulations have strangled that.

Nice link, witcher-sense!

Thanks to you all for shedding more light on Wasabi's new project.

Will there be any kind of advance notice before they BLACKLIST?

Creating a different thread so as not to clog up comments on nearby Wasabi threads.

Soon after Wasabi kicked off its new CoinJoin "Service", (witcher-sense, IIRC) showed us their first CJ in a post.

Is there an easy way to look at / find recent Wasabi v.2 CoinJoins?  I'd like to take a closer look at a few, maybe even try a small CJ myself there with some "well tainted" coins I already own just to see for myself what some limits might be ($ size of TX's, % "tainted", etc.).

I'm one of those learn by doing dudes, except for trying to learn programming...

Many thanks!

We're just back from Peru. ...

Alas we finally succumbed to COVID (probably omicron) while there.  Double-vaxxed, non-boostered.  I took plenty of Ivermectin and Zinc (as per FLCCC protocol), and it's hard to say if they helped.  Maybe, our cases were mild.  I had been taking Vitamin D3 for over a year as "they say" it helps strengthen the body's immunity.

...

What symptoms did you have? How long did it take for you to recover?

My wife got it a day or so before I did, some 4-5 days after arrival to Lima.  Maybe we got it at one of the airports or on the flight, we don't know.

I had a mild fever (at one point it spiked to 102, a Peruvian thermometer...), then an hour or two later back to just a slight fever.  Malaise.  Mild headache.  Sore throat for 2 days or so (took a local antibiotic, cleared that right up).  No cough, no gut issues, no loss of taste or smell.  Slightly dizzy / bad equilibrium / general weakness.  Sick feeling!

BUT, it was very different from the at least three cases of FLU I had when younger.  With Flu, each time I had body aches, cough, could barely get out of bed, etc.  COVID felt completely different.

I am about 97% back now (say, two weeks after first symptoms).  I did bump my forehead one night at 3:30 AM when strength and equilibrium failed me after using the toilet.  So, if anyone gets what they think might be COVID, be careful!

My wife is back at 100%.  Moi?  I'm just going to hide under the bed for the next couple of days and do as little as possible.

EDIT: WatChe, I'm pretty much done with the symptoms other than the typical relative weakness that many get from after COVID "goes away".  YES, staying hydrated is also important, good point.

We're just back from Peru.  While there I found an exchange house ("Casa de Cambio") that will sell BTC for 2% over spot + $20 for him to extract the BTC  from his exchange.  The below link has an OLD ADDRESS, his new shop is some 50 meters south along Caminos del Inca from the intersection of Av. A. Benavides and Caminos del Inca (ref the corner of Inca and Benvavides with the bank):

https://moneytransferexchange.com/casa-de-cambio-christian-currency-exchange-in-santiago-de-surco-peru/

That part of Lima is not really central to much of anything of great interest, but if you're in the neighborhood, well...  But that 2% + $20 is a great rate, for cash (US$ or local Soles) with no KYC.  As long as Christian is around you're good.

Disclosure: Unaffiliated in any way with him, but have known him slightly for years.

Disclosure: Peru is a very interesting country, but not "easy" like France and Italy for example.  We've been there many times, my wife was born there.

IVM (as well as HCQ) are easy to get at Lima pharmacies.

Oh!  A speculation thread.  OK.  I have been following Bobby Lee's advice: "Don't sweat the volatility."  Crypto Winter will (likely) end, and all of us HODLers will be fine, or even better than fine.  Like I had to say that to you guys...

130  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockstream's Green Wallet on: July 13, 2022, 05:27:18 PM
...

ETFbitcoin and dkbit98

Hey, thanks for your comments, I will reply why I still like Green as my easy-to-use, everyday mobile wallet.

First, as many of you longer-term members know I am not particularly adept at technology (not trained, not a programmer).  Simple is good.  I do not use multi-sig (no way).  Nor am I interested in shitcoins or even Lightning/Liquid (both of those are still very fuzzy concepts in this old guy's head).  Some of the off-chain technologies do look like they have great promise, but they're not for me until they become easier to use.

I have looked at Sparrow, but it looks complicated and there was some issue (which I forget at the moment) that make it a no-go for me at least for now.  I am hoping that Sparrow will become easy to use as it DOES have features that look very interesting especially their version of coinjoin.

Nor am I capable of setting up my own node, using LINUX, etc.  It's too late for me to tackle those learning curves.

Simplicity matters.  For me, Green offers me enough features with simplicity.  I get BTC onboard with Green (better for me than blockchain or bitpay), then move them to hardware wallets.  Works for me.
131  Economy / Web Wallets / Blockstream's Green Wallet on: July 12, 2022, 10:32:30 PM
...

I was not really very happy with either my mobile wallet nor even my desktop wallet (after the Wasabi betrayal of confidentiality), so I went looking for an alternative, especially one that would work of my mobile device as well as my desktop.

I already own (and am very happy with) both a Trezor T and BitBox02 hardware wallets.

So, I decided to give blockstream.com's offering in the space for both my Win PC and cellphone: https://blockstream.com/green/

All in all, I am pretty happy.  It's easy to use (important for me).  You can adjust the TX fees to whatever sats/vB you want, which is nice (neither of my hardware wallets allow setting EXACT fees).

I like the Green Wallet more than my ancient blockchain.com and bitpay.com wallets for everyday mobile use.  I use the PC version if I want a quick'n'easy transfer from "bcq1..." to/from "3..." addresses (mobile version allows that too).  Another tool I like is that Green can delete wallet info once you're sure you don't need it anymore (uh, do make sure you REALLY want to do that).

EDIT (see below post on August 24): The only thing I would change would be to add a coin control feature, which I could not find anywhere there.

So for quick and easy receipt or purchases of BTC, Green is good!  Of course I quickly send on most BTC from there to a hardware wallet.

133  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 18, 2022, 05:42:12 AM
This place sure gets weird when Bitcoin is going down.   And since most of the people here have been through a bear or 2 it's even weirder than weird.

The whole world is getting weirder, quickly, and in a very bad way.  Weirder than during the last bear market for sure.

My uninformed guess, of little value, is that it's all some kind a cultural thing(s).  The USA and Europe have slid into a kind of cultural degeneracy that is absolutely inexplicable to me (Drag Queens teaching First Graders in the NYC public schools how to apply DQ makeup?  Spend more .gov money to slow inflation?  "Green Energy"?  Corruption at all levels?  Loss of fundamental liberties practically every day?  Begging for increased foreign oil production when we have so much oil (and natural gas) here?  Etc.)

I struggle to decide how best to provide what I can for my grandchildren in such an uncertain and toxic environment.  But, no one can do much to help far into the future, especially with the instability we face.

I think I'll start fitting myself for a Tinfoil Hat.  I have crossed over to the other side.  Looks like some of the conspiracy theorists are right.  "It's not incompetence, it's deliberate"

I have not seen many comments on mindrust lately...

If he's a trader, or at least buys & sells some of his BTC stash (IIRC he sold around $40,000), I would think that turns out to have been smart!

As many of you know, I sold most of my BTC last year in small pieces, 2021 average sale price: ~$42,250.  I am happy that I was prudent, and took a lot of profit along the way.

Often, prudence can be smart.

In 2022 I have bought on the way down, costs between $45,000 and $24,000.  Was that prudent?  We'll see.

An hour or so ago, Bitcoin Magazine published the below piece on Wasabi Wallet 2.0:

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/wasabi-wallet-2-contains-new-features-for-optimizing-bitcoin-coinjoins

Note that author Shawn Amick did not mention anything about the controversy surrounding Wasabi working with blockchain analysis companies to censor their coinjoin UTXOs....

Hmm...

Is Wasabi helping blockchain analysis companies track transactions?

Yup, 11 pages on Wasabi's decision to lessen privacy here:

OT:

One really foreboding sign going on in the debt market is that 10 yr bond yield.

Keep your eyes on it.

It is a really bad sign to see the 10-yr incrementally jump 0.1 points every single trading day.

It is signaling really bad things in the debt market.

The Fed better have a plan to stabilize that.

Nice catch, Torque.

10 yr yield is up pretty sharply over the past few days, it will nail some bond market guys (usually pretty smart guys) badly.  Then what...?

I doubt the FED has a plan for that, what can they do?  [Don't answer that, they can do all sorts of trickery]

The Yield Curve has become more inverted, last I checked.  That's often bad news as well.

Let's hope Honey Badger don't give a ......
