So, Doc how is Bitminter's security?

Good.

I recommend turning on 2-factor authentication if supported by your OpenID identity provider. It's supported by Google and Verisign that I know of.

Just throwing it out there would be nice to have... is to be able to use the program to remotely view/control another computer running the software on the same network. Kind of like how you can login twice with BOINC or add another computer with Folding@home to both control and view. Not sure if that is a huge pain and I can remotely monitor the computer in question. I guess this is the downfall of running something like this in a graphical environment, because if I was running a Raspberry Pi I could SSH and view/control it way easier. Just a thought.

Something like this is planned. But it will take a while before I get to it.

Thanks Doc!  I already have installed those USB to Serial drivers when I setup EasyMiner (the BFL software/eclipse pool), so this should be a snap.  I want to switch to Bitminter so I could rack up some NMC while mining BTC.  I keep my miner off-site (in an unused room at a relative's house), when I get around to doing the switch over, I'll let you know how it went.  Prolly next week sometime.

You can use EasyMiner on Bitminter. You need to choose custom or manual mining or whatever they call it. There will be a command line field with an example bfgminer command. Put in something like this in that field:

bfgminer -o stratum+tcp://mint.bitminter.com:3333 -u user_worker -p X

Except replace user_worker with your user and worker name at Bitminter.

So i recentley set up my account on bitminter.com and started using the Bitminter miner and I can see that its getting proof of work accepted by server and all of that stuff but my balance on the website is not changing, only the unconfirmed for NMC and the future for both BTC and NMC are changing. I have my account info set up on the miner as well. Thoughts?

There's a delay from doing work until the work is fully paid, 10 shifts, currently about 10 hours.

If you turn off the prepay perk the pay will first appear as unconfirmed. If the blocks are confirmed then the pay is confirmed. This takes about 20 hours.

More info on payouts:

Is there a quick run down/tutorial for install and setup of a BFL ASIC device (little single) with Bitminter on Win XP or Ubunto?

You may need to install drivers on old operating systems: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

On Ubuntu you may need to give yourself access to serial ports:

"sudo usermod -a -G dialout USERNAME" then log out and back in

Then plug the device in the USB port and start Bitminter client, or if the client is already running choose "devices" -> "probe all ports" in the menu.

im going to bet bitminter is pigging out on RAM and crashing.

It's possible. I run it for weeks without restarting without increased memory usage. But it could be something that only occurs under specific conditions.

Any more details?

kj nonchalantly tosses in an extremely low hash.

We have almost 11 days left of the race, but this will be a tough one to beat.

He can almost taste the KnC Jupiter. It tastes like metal.

is it possible to do manual cashouts at all?

Coming soon.

Manual cash out will allow smaller amounts to be cashed out, which a lot of users will be happy about. But be warned, cashing out tiny amounts is not recommended. You'll get a "wallet full of pennies" and be forced to pay (higher) fees to send coins.

You think those "get free bitcoins" sites are doing you a favor, until you try to send the coins and see the minimum fee required.

I'm not sure what the minimum should be for manual cash out. I don't really want to make it too easy for users to shoot themselves in the foot. I'm getting a lot of complaints from GPU miners wanting to cash out some bitdust though. It might be easier to just let them do it, instead of explaining over and over how much it will hurt. Tongue

if you hit probe too fast the device has not popped up yet you bomb if you hit probe too slow after it reappears on the screen you time out.

Wow, really? Does it behave this way consistently?

Any suggestions of what I may be doing wrong?

Many people have this problem and I haven't been able to figure out why yet.

Could you try this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=31163.msg3633302#msg3633302

Bitminter pays minimum fees on auto cash out transactions. This has usually worked well, but right now there appears to be a big boom in bitcoin usage.

The number of unconfirmed transactions is very high and growing rapidly. I've changed our settings to make bigger blocks and include more free and minimum fee transactions. Hopefully that will help somewhat, but I think we need other pools to do the same.

This is the best mining client and pool i have used.

No configuring, just mine away.

I have a request: Add litecoin mining support Smiley

Thanks, glad you like it. I'll think about it.
1152  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: BitMinter client (Win/Linux/Mac, BFL ASIC, Block Erupter USB) on: November 18, 2013, 09:36:50 PM
I have not read the whole thread.

Wondering if you ever got a BF1 for testing?

I just tried the beta on Fedora without any luck (and also without much poking around).

Not sure yet why it is not working for many people.

Try starting the client, then unplug the BF1. Plug it back in, wait a couple seconds, then probe all ports.

Make sure your user has access to serial ports. On Ubuntu: "sudo usermod -a -G dialout USERNAME" then log out and back in

Whoa! subseaguru was looking so secure holding the lead for so long. But ScandyAndy jumps into first place with an even better hash.

Still, we have almost half the race left.

Will someone luck out and take over the lead?

2) Hey Doc, why can't we seem to use workers in the client ? I tried MoreBloodWine_worker2 on my brothers computer but the work he does defaults to worker1 since it's the default worker.

You have to put the user name in the user name field and the worker name in the worker name field.

Is it a good idea to turn on auto cash out? I worry i'll get nothing because it subtract the fee of the transaction from my share.

Auto cash out is free - Bitminter pays the fee for you. There will soon be a manual cash out too, but that will require a fee.
1156  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mining with Bitminter and EasyMiner on: November 18, 2013, 12:58:09 PM
I am using BitMinter which often stops working when it runs for longer than 2-3 hours. This means I constantly have to check and restart the mining device every few hours in case it has stopped. It is winter now so I don't think it is overheating. Is there a way to automatically reset and start the Jalapeno miner in Bitminter?

What exactly happens? Does the program crash or lock up? Does the device spit out tons of errors in the log and finally give up? Do you get network errors or other error messages?

After installing VCP driver from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm and connecting it to your PC, does it show up in device manager (assuming you use windows)? Under "Ports (COM & LPT)" ?

When you see "relayed by Bitminter" at blockchain.info it just means we relayed the block. That doesn't mean we created the block, it only means the block passed through one of our bitcoin nodes. In a peer-to-peer system like bitcoin, nodes are relaying stuff all the time. The information is utterly useless. What you can read out of this is "Bitminter is using Bitcoin". Great. Thank you, blockchain.info.

If your wallet got hacked and the transaction that stole the coins was relayed by person X: that doesn't mean he stole your coins. It just means he runs a bitcoin node. Don't start threatening him based on some nonsense you saw on blockchain.info. You can trust that data like you can trust random gossip on the interwebs. This example is based on a true story.

For some reason blockchain.info displays this (completely useless) information very prominently on their site and it causes a lot of confusion. Why on Earth would they do this? That, gentle reader, I leave for you to figure out.

Here is an alternative that actually works: http://blockorigin.pfoe.be/
1160  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Are miner pool thieving away? on: November 16, 2013, 10:35:25 PM
Why would they interfere? That's only superstition.

The chance that a proof of work (aka share) mined at difficulty 1 will produce a block is 1 divided by the difficulty.

So your hashrate determines how many lottery tickets you get, and the difficulty determines how likely each lottery ticket is to win. That's all there is.
