661  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Looking For Truly Knowledgeable Individuals For CC Article Interview on: July 17, 2014, 10:09:43 AM
A reporter is doing a story on the proliferation of  alternate crypto-currencies, and the future of alts in general, if you are interested in being interviewed on the record (real name and phone interview) let me know immediately so that I could pass your info to him.

You must be seriously into alternate CC (min 10 hrs a week engagement), this would be an excellent opportunity for community leaders to speak intelligently about their respective coins, and CC industry in general.

A reporter for which publication?
Some blog writers have been known to call themselves journalists.  Cool

Associated Press (AP)

can't get more legit than that, especially on the worldwide stage

Being a stringer for AP myself, I've never heard of AP reporters outsourcing interview subjects or sources to a third party.
So pinch of salt and all that.
662  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][RVC] / RevoCoin / POS - POW / 10,000kh miner limit / launch 14-07 on: July 17, 2014, 10:02:48 AM
WHat keeps a larger miner from signing up with all the various pools (assuming there are more than 1) and running 1 miner on each pool?  If there were, say, 5 pools, they could easily get to just under 50 Mh/s without an issue.

Thats what I was thinking or simple have a proxy for each new account on the same pool. Hell you can make 10 accounts=10x more mining power=10x more coins earned.

It won't be that easy. The pools will be actively monitored and suspicious IP's banned.

Given a choice of solo mining a coin with a 1G farm, or creating 100 accounts (100 x 10Mhs) to mine RVS, I think farms will give this coin a miss.
So yes, hash restrictions, although not perfect, will work.

However, unlike Minerals, the devs do not have direct control of the two pools.
So it will boil down to trusting Suprnova and Maxminers, and hoping none of their employees leak the source to some private farm (or farm the coin themselves).

One thing everyone must remember is - hashrate restrictions means there will be no whales at the start of trading.
Price will take some time to climb as whales must first accumulate their share before starting a pump.
663  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Exlusive interview with The Mage of LTC Association - full of rude questions! on: July 17, 2014, 02:06:20 AM

TheMage is a nice guy. I've interacted with him before on the LTC board.
But as long as LA remains a closed group, it can't grow.

LA wasn't a closed group.  It was open to everyone.  I joined a month ago.  Recently (about 3 weeks ago) they have temporarily stopped new memberships as they reorganize membership types.  Once that is finalized they will open it up again.

Maybe I should've put it a little better, but I'll just quote kingscrown and TheMage directly.

Quote
Who are the leaders of the Litecoin Association and how do they come to hold their positions? Is there an election?

The current board of directors (I will go by their handles) are Carnth, Crazik, Seansoutpost, and Weex. The ambassadors are myself and Kyrio.
I believe the original board of directors was included with its founding
[...]
I was personally appointed to ambassador
[...]
As far as elections, there has not been any elections for those on the board.

The original dots were not all the same size. I recreated these, and you took them.
You even kept the exact same proportions and distances of the design.

Not a problem mate, be happy with it. Just saying that next time you won't be able to use my work as base for yours anymore in the future;)

I haven't checked yet, but if this is true, then Unlock.mk should be disqualified.

Unlock.mk, you were also caught plagiarizing in the Cococoin thread, but the coin owner already paid you, and went ahead to use it anway.

Even though the Pseudocoin dev had paid you, he did the right thing by not using your design.

Coin owners should not encourage plagiarizing by rewarding unoriginal work. Some coin owners continue to use plagiarized designs even after being informed - that smacks of irresponsibility and shortsightedness.

667  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Team Earthcoin Newsletter on: July 16, 2014, 11:30:01 PM
The vision, to be very blunt, is a hell of a lot bigger than that. We envision a time when Bitcoins, Dollars, Euros and what have you are traded on exchanges where the BASE of the pair is Earthcoin.

And I thought OPECcoin was ambitious.
Clearly, Earthcoin is on a whole different league.  Grin
668  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: This will be a real game changer Credits CRD will have a Exchange in the wallet on: July 16, 2014, 11:23:20 PM
How would this work? Genuinely curious.
Will we trade remotely from the wallet, or will the integration be at code level?
When we login, for example, will it be trasmitted to the exchange?
How will the data be protected in the blockchain, and how will it effect the blockchain size?
Any exchange on board thus far?
669  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mintpal hacked (VeriCoin) on: July 15, 2014, 09:27:05 PM
I just noticed this particular sentence from a Coindesk article about the hack.

Quote
According to MintPal, only the vericoin wallet was affected during the attack. This includes the database containing sensitive customer information and passwords.

Has Mintpal made an official comment about this yet?
Has MintPal-Jay commented on this yet?
Has our password and email been compromised?

I urge everyone to be safe and immediately change their Mintpal password. (I have withdrawn everything out of Mintpal a while ago.)

Philosophical issues and principals about decentralization should take a back seat first.
IMO, the most crucial thing right now is for Mintpal to provide a full disclosure of the incident, including method, vector, scope and resulting remedial actions.

Rose, broccoli and oak, to start the ball rolling.

672  Other / Meta / Re: It Is Not Against Forum Rules For Users To Post Your Personal Information Here! on: July 15, 2014, 02:02:35 PM
That is the problem. There is no way that the forum could verify every scam accusation, nor should it have to now that there are more appropriate services available for this. Since we can't make exceptions to allow for people to post the personal information of scammers, we have two choices:

1) Remove all posted personal information, like Reddit.
2) Allow everyone to post personal information about anybody.

Bitcoin attracts a lot of scammers, so I would tend to err on safer side of allowing all personal information. Not to mention, if it wasn't posted here, it would just be posted somewhere else. Public information cannot be made unpublic.

Right.

I do feel for innocent victims of doxxing, though. I welcome suggestions on how to improve forum policy in this area. However, forum policy must be consistent, and I'm not going to start deciding who's guilty and who's not (again).

I've been thinking that maybe it would be an improvement to require that dox be posted along with sources for all of the data, and ban dox that doesn't come from a "public source" (government site, news story, Facebook, etc.). This would make casual doxxing more difficult, help readers determine whether the dox is actually accurate, and hamper distribution of info obtained from illegal sources (hacking, etc.). I'm not sure that it would help enough to be worth the trouble, though.

Scam accusations and doxxes should be made only in one subforum, where IP addresses of posters are displayed.
This would immediately eliminate most of the fake scam accusations on the board while enhancing the credibility of existing ones.
It would also force people to be more responsible with their accusations and doxxing.

The forum should also be fitted with a filter to prevent posters from masking their IPs using free proxy services.
There are numerous sources (updated daily) of public proxies.
Private VPN and proxies are traceable, so it shouldn't matter if posters are using them.

Anonymity should not be abused, in my opinion.
673  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Alpha Technologies class action lawsuit ? on: July 15, 2014, 01:49:20 PM
I am not familiar with this issue. However, based on what I know, there are elements of fraud here, right?
If so, why are you pursuing a civil suit instead of filing criminal charges?

675  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: URO unmoderated thread for Best Thread Ever award on: July 12, 2014, 11:17:11 PM

Yeah, the Uro thread was epic. Anyone who hasn't read it should spend some time there and observe first-hand an orchestrated FUD campaign.
There was one guy who spent about 12 hours at one stretch posting the same thing repeatedly in almost every page; another who race-baited at every opportunity, while another focused on posting links (including about a crime commited by someone named Bryan who shared the same surname with the dev!).

I stayed out of Uro, as I assumed at first it was simply a joke. Or some sort of weird metaphor for the shitcoins being released, but instead of shit the dev chose urea. After seeing the price go crazy, I now of course wish I invested in a shit... umm.. ureacoin.

So I didn't even follow the thread at all. I assume orchestrated FUD campaigns like that are paid by whales, or something similar? Every coin has its trolls/fud spreaders, but some are more insane than others. Maza had a handful seemingly posting every 15 minutes, for days on end. So if they aren't being paid, they are just completely insane or have no lives outside of this forum, I guess? Figure they got to be paid by someone.
Unless there's a group of psychopaths trolling around in packs here, I think you are right about them being paid by whales. That is the only logical reason why some would commit days on end to something like this.  Grin

I love this thread, so much entertainment

Oh man you should check out the unmoderated URO ANN thread. Mystery, murder, intrigue... It has it all.

Well mainly its childish behavior by people with poor english skills, punctuated by racism and threats of violence, but it was entertaining as fuck.

Basically, this kinda thing is what made the internet great.  Or at least one kinda great.  I guess there *are* a few other good things.

677  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bittrex killing the altcoin market? on: July 12, 2014, 07:50:55 PM
I've had a thought, it wasn't more than a few months ago when some coins would have several thousand BTC volume a day over various exchanges easily, whereas today it seems they don’t go above 500 BTC often. Back in the day Cryptsy didn't used to have total volume, but I'm sure they did over 10K BTC on a number of days on just DOGE alone and this was around when BTC was priced at around $1K. All the altcoin exchanges seem to have lower volume more recently.

In my mind it appears that the dynamic has gone from heavily trading established older coins to speculating on brand new coins. While this isn't a problem if the new coins are good, in reality it is just opening a huge window for coin developers to scam users and to let them get away with it too.

I’ve been studying the exchange Bittrex, which looks to be gaining in popularity, and they appear to be adding around 2 coins a day at the moment. This is a crazy pace to be adding new markets and doesn't give a chance for the coins added a few days back to even have a chance to grow. Furthermore they seem to remove markets quite quickly too, so the coin could be in and out before you know it, leaving many users holding coins that no longer have any value at all.

The bigger problem however seems that this is attracting bad developers to create coins that promise the world and yet deliver nothing. The formula appears to be quite simple: Create a coin with an exciting name and has some new feature coming soon (whitepaper seems to be hot these days), take a premine, get added to an exchange after gaining some hype during the small mining period and then dumping the premine and running away once the price is high enough and there are enough buy orders.

Of course once a user has been burnt like this, they are far less likely to invest again in altcoins, thus surely turning away a large number of users each time. I've been trading cryptocurrency for over seven months now, and this sort of thing didn't exist widely back then, I now feel scared to pick up a new coin as it’s hard to say whether it’s genuine or will result in the developer abandoning it. I can only correlate this change to exchanges like Bittrex supporting these scams.

It would be harsh to only blame Bittrex for this, as the other exchanges, Cryptsy, Mintpal, Poloniex, etc. are all somewhat at fault too, but I think Bittrex has the largest proportion of scams and still is adding coins at an unbelievable rate. I find it odd that users seem to be supporting Bittrex and others while they do this, as it could lead to the downfall of altcoin trading based on the changes I've seen...

To be honest, I didn't really have a good impression of Bittrex at the start.
But during a discussion we had concerning the listing of Minerals last month, he said something really, really heartwarming.

"bittrex-richie: Lilac: yeah i've been watching it... trust me.. id rather not see you guys deposit BTCs in that place
for the safety of your btc"

I may not agree with his (or Rami's ) decisions occasionally, but I feel some comfort knowing that he does think about the welfare of us traders.

Ditto with Polo. Tristan may be a little lacking in the PR department, but he showed some brass balls after Polo was hacked a while back.

Yes, they do share some blame for the current state of affairs, but I believe they are also learning as they grow. In Bittrex's case, have you noticed despite the increase in volume and coin listed, the site is still relatively fast? I think those new coins are financing the servers there.

The bigger problem though, in my opinion (as I've outlined here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=687349.20), is the unrelenting flood of coins by new alts. If we can subdue that raging torrent, I suspect the exchanges will automatically correct themselves.

If I may paraphrase you Sony, I think extreme is the keyword here.
Complete deregulation = lawlessness.

Here's an analogy.
Some strongly believe that the medical profession should not be overly regulated.
However, almost everyone agree that medical professionals must be licensed.
That is not a contradicton.

Similarly, I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect that the community is provided with the opportunity to evaluate coin developers' coding abilities, grasp of economics and most importantly, integrity, through their forum discourse.

With regards to your example on drugs, even the most liberal regulations in the world is still, well, regulated.
To be clear though, we are not imposing any regulations here.
These developers are still able to produce their coins according to their own schedule.
However, to enjoy the privilege of announcing their coins on the most influential and lucrative crypto board in the world, they must first become part of the community to ensure they do not exploit community members.

Community members must still conduct their own due diligence before investing - but they will now actually have something to research about.
