You do realize people no longer even read your posts right?

Very true.  Wall of text accomplishes only one thing which is not being read.

I still read Spoetnik's textwalls. I find his writing to be very unique.

I do as well. I like his candor.

As for Monero, it reminds me of junk bonds.
The coin itself may be great, but the overbearing approach towards promoting the coin puts me off from acquiring any.
The faux fanaticism displayed by a bunch of new accounts; the patronizing approach towards criticisms screams of dysfunctional groupthink (which even extends to exchange chat boxes); the repeated putdowns of other coins and technologies - all these seem to be par for the course.

Monero needs to learn to be graceful.
522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Moderation of (possible) FUD and insults on: September 29, 2014, 08:17:01 AM
After receiving a lot of PMs about this subject, seeing a lot of reports of this kind and after one of the global mods PMed me with suggestions regarding this topic, I thought that I should cover it:

Possible (or real, not for me to judge) FUD, accusations or statements are not moderated.

Moderators don't moderate for truth. However, trolling isn't allowed. If a user is habitually posting obviously false nonsense just to stir up trouble, then it's considered trolling, which is prohibited. However, such cases should be thoroughly documented in the report (There are tons of reports that just say "trolling", but moderators don't have time to look through each user's post).

Possible (since we don't have the time or resources to check) insults are also allowed as long as they contain any kind of constructive opinion, info or something else substantial and aren't off-topic. For example, posting something like "you are dumb" will be deleted as it contains no meaningful content. However, if the post is somehwere along the lines of "You are dumb. This is wrong because this website/thread/etc. has explained it's not right", it's in most cases accepted.

Scams aren't moderated either due to the fact that's it's extremely hard to make an unbiased decision on a limited amount of evidence and time. Moderators don't have time to be investigators.

Legal note: This is forum policy, not mine.

How will this be enforceable?
The sheer number of FUD and drama merchants around these parts will probably drown mods in reports.
Further, the following two sentences imply mods will have enormous arbitrary leeway in enforcements.

• If a user is habitually posting obviously false nonsense just to stir up trouble, then it's considered trolling, which is prohibited.
• insults are also allowed as long as they contain any kind of constructive opinion, info or something else substantial and aren't off-topic.

Despite your protestations, @mprep, mods will have to become even more involved to be able to deliver learned judgements.
Opinions will be formed, and decisions will be shaped by these opinions. Individual subjectivity will determine the fate of alleged wrongdoers.

At the risk of being labelled as just another serial contrarian, this is just another knee jerk reaction from forum mods and administrators that once again ignores the root of the problem.

Conservative should stop denying the truth .

lol nice troll thread first off i guess... i dunno.

but anyways, nope. we are more in debt and yes clinton + bush put in this position. clinton inherited a surplus and after his 8 years in office bush inherited debt then bush added to it.

Eh?
Reagan tripled the federal debt during his eight years in office, mainly caused by loss of revenue from tax cuts.
All this to finance enormous tax cuts to the top income bracket, as well as record breaking military spending.
By the time Reagan left, the United States could no longer realistically manage it's debt; the United States could no longer realistically pay back its debt.

Believe it or not, Reaganomics' trickle down theory is based on the Laffer Curve, a theory conceived in 1974 by Arthur Laffer during dinner with Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.
It was meant to be a campaign platform, since the theory is not supported by any empirical data. But it somehow became the basis of Reagan's economic policy!

By the time Bush Sr. came, the full weight of the situation hit home. The debts were unmanageable, and the projected economic growth from the tax cuts never materialized.
Bush Sr. had no choice but to raise taxes, despite his famous "Read my lips, no new taxes" pledge.

Economically, Clinton is probably the best American president in the 20th century.
The United States experienced the longest period of economic growth in American history during his watch and a record 24 million jobs were created.
More importantly, Clinton presided over three surplus budgets - the only time it has happened since 1969!

He handed Bush Jr. a healthy economy and a vibrant job market.
One of the first economic decisions by Bush Jr. after coming into office was to enact a new round of tax cuts, which ultimately cost the federal government at least $1.8 trillion.
Once again, the projected benefits from the cuts never materialized. The federal debts got larger though, along with annual interest payments.
Bush Jr. also launched two credit card wars, the costs which are still being paid to this day.

The difference with USE coin is that USE was not hosted by Bittrex so they had no way to enforce the burning of the extra coins.  In this case it was hosted on Bittrex, but I have to say the thought crossed my mind that maybe they are shorting the extra 3.5M coins before burning them.  Do we have any verification from Bittrex that they destroyed the extra coins?

People need to calm down and respect the timelines laid out; we are only human Wink and we have an escrow period for the sole purpose of making sure the right things happen and are audited.  Please be patient.  That said, we have burned the coins - feel free to monitor this address till the end of time...

Richie, what are the "success conditions" that Cluster will be subjected to?

In his whitepaper, the OP states that the incorporation of the new clustering algorithm "is undetermined at this point".

Will releasing a plain vanilla wallet with promise of future developments fulfill those "success conditions"?
526  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ☷ [ANN] ☷ [MODERATED] ☷ CLSTR ☷ ClusterCoin ☷ the Future of Money ☷ on: August 24, 2014, 02:10:10 AM

Essex, I have three questions for you.

(i) What will prevent two or more people from double spending by using the same wallet.dat in two or more different geographic locations?

In your whitepaper, you claimed that the Cluster protocol will automatically split blocks within the network according to geographic regions (undefined) and create multiple valid blockchains.
You further stated that sync blocks will be generated only once certain thresholds are reached. To me, this 'synch gap' creates a perfect environment for network-wide double spending.

(ii) What will prevent entities from creating blockchain forks within their own geographic region?

Since the hashrate from individual geographic regions will be relatively small, a person or organization with a significant enough hashrate could easily create forks to facilitate double spending.

In addition, said entity could fool the protocol to allocate a geographic region for itself by spamming dusts to create the illusion of trade volume. In your whitepaper, you stated:

Quote
[...] we believe that the most important part of the clustering algorithm is to cluster large economic hubs that have a lot of financial activity in order to maintain fast transaction confirmation time.

As you can see, the threat is very valid.

(iii) Did you buy this Bitcointalk account?

If yes, may I know your original Bitcointalk account?

If no, can you explain why your earlier posts consists almost entirely of asking for giveaways (wallet address + 'Thanks!' or 'Awesome'!)?
Your four months absence between post #147 and #148 also raises some questions.

Hi everyone,

how can i know that a coin is "dead"  ?

Definitively, when all the nodes are gone.

However, as cryptorob mentioned above, an MIA dev is a huge red flag!

Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that the dead sometimes has a way of coming back to life.
So if you are holding a substantial amount of Legit (hey, hey!), hold on to it for a couple of months, just in case someone intends to revive the project.

529  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin changing my ideology from socialism to libertarianism! What about you? on: August 23, 2014, 07:39:18 AM
not sure what socialism / libertarianism really mean, but I like cheap stuffs, I like craiglist, ebay, yard sale, discount, whatnot. I hate healthcare in the states as it's not affordable, I hate all kinds of insurances. Ideally normal people should be able to walk to in a hospital for an ear check, dick scan, without health insurance, paying like $20, max, (that's what they do in most countries btw). If my car / computer break, i will just throw them away and get new ones, but life I cannot. I'm all for libertarianess, but keeping things affordable is a must.

why the free market fails to bring down health care costs?

Because there has never been free market competition for healthcare.
It was an illusion fostered by insurance and pharmaceutical companies, among others.
There are regional monopolies, pricing cartels and ridiculously well-funded lobbies.
Why else would every American administration since Nixon had tried (and failed) to revamp healthcare laws?

How else can anyone explain the skyrocketing healthcare cost over the last 40 years, when even poor Asian countries can offer outpatient treatment to all their citizens for less than 50 American cents each?

By 2010, Americans were paying an average of $8,402 annually for healthcare expenses, the highest in the world - and yet, there were already over 50 million (and growing) uninsured Americans.
How did France and Canada, arguably the two countries with the best healthcare system in the world, managed to offer universal healthcare to their citizens at a significantly lower per capita cost?

Bloomberg did a head count a few years ago, and there were over 6,000 healthcare lobbyists handling the 535 Congressmen and House Reps in Washington alone.
There are more healthcare lobbyists in D.C than congressional staffers!
Most of the opposition for Obama's Affordable Healthcare Act was financed by organizations funded by some of the largest insurance, pharmaceutical and healthcare groups, sometimes through a labyrinth network of shelf companies.
Obamacare is far from perfect, and I expect it to be repeatedly amended over the coming years. But it was a crucial and absolutely necessary legislation to loosen the grip of regional elites.
530  Other / Off-topic / Re: General Football Discussion - Poll Added on: August 18, 2014, 06:01:12 AM
I wouldn't agree that Chelsea has a bad playing style. I admire Mourinho because of his successes in recent history and now he has complete team. I consider Chelsea to be favorites for Premiership this season. Despite the fact that they play defensive football, they only play it against strong teams. And when strong team face strong and organised defense like Mourinho's is they have serious problem with defeating it. And look at attacking power of Chelsea now. I consider them top 3 in Champions League as well.

Well, it looks like we have different opinions on this one. I would predict like this:

1. Chelsea
2. Arsenal
3. Liverpool
4. Manchester United
5. Manchester City

I might not be objective because I'm Manchester United fan and I would love them to win it but this is as objective as I can get considering that fact.

I just can't see Chelsea finishing first. All I can say is watch their first couple of games and see how the new team is. I don't like it alot.

I understand that people dislike way Chelsea play but I think they have the most wicked manager of all teams and that he knows what he is doing. Their team is complete and they are "officially" attacking title this season (last season Mourinho was saying that they are not in the race since the beginning).

Mourinho's teams, similar to Benitez, controls space. Even without the ball, they typically dictate the pace and flow of a game.
It's not pretty on the eyes, but very effective.
I feel that Chelsea's chances this season will depend on how Mourinho utilize Fabregas. Fabregas is the key, IMO, not Costa.
Fabregas doesn't like to be restricted, and enjoys roaming all over the pitch - which is at odds at how Mourinho likes his CM to play.
At Barca, an exasperated Guardiola once said Fabregas is like an anarchist.
If Mourinho is able to fully manage Fabregas, they have a good chance of winning the title. Like City, Chelsea has an awesome squad.

But, I will be very surprised if City wins it again this season.
Although they have made several solid acquisitions, especially Mangala, I think Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have improved significantly.

Speaking of Arsenal, they probably have the best midfield in the league. But their problem last season was the absence of a proven goalscorer.
After Walcott's injury, Wenger only had Giroud. This season, with Podolski still injured, Wenger will still have to rely on Giroud and Sanogo.
While new boy Alexis Sanchez will score a few, I feel Wenger should've invested in another striker.

Brendan Rodgers also need to sign another striker soon. Liverpool can't depend Sturridge alone (Lambert is just for cover).
While Sterling will chip in a few, we definitely need another proven goalscorer.

Manchester United - Swansea 1, Arsenal - Crystal Palace 1,
Leicester - Everton 2, QPR - Hull City 1,
Liverpool - Southampton 1, Burnley - Chelsea 2,

These are my teams for first round of new season

You don't expect any draw for first week?

I'm a Liverpool fan, but there is a chance we might draw against Southampton.
On paper, they are no match for us.
However, we will be playing with up to four new recruits (Lovren, Manquillo, Can, Lambert).
The bench will also see Enrique (out for almost a year), Suso (returning from a year-long loan at Almeria), Borini (also returning from a Sunderland loan) and Ibe (promoted from the Academy).
The team might need time to gel.

This is even before we consider the injured new recruits - Lallana and Markovic.

On the plus side, both Sterling and Coutinho were electric during the pre-season.

Btw, is anyone interested in a Fantasy League?

I'll tell you right now, Liverpool will win with atleast a two goal difference. Southampton before so many players left was a great team, now not much of it is left.

Yes, they bought some players, but these are not from the same quality as the players they have sold.

We scraped by with a 2-1 win, but I hope you guys can see my concern now. The Saints deserved at least a draw from yesterday's game.

Manquillo failed to keep pace with Johnson on the opposite flank, preventing our centerbacks from moving the defensive line higher.
This forced Stevie to retreat, creating a gap between him, Lucas and Henderson, which Southampton took full advantage off.
Eventually, Johnson stopped moving up from the left flank to maintain the defensive line, which meant all three midfielders had to drop down as well.
This in turn created a gap with the forward line, which made it difficult to make lightning fast transitions, our greatest weapon.

After half time, Southampton began double teaming Manquillo, which forced Gerrard to provide cover, at the cost of losing control of the midfield.
Even the introduction of Allen failed to stem the tide.
With Flanagan injured and Enrique not fully fit yet, Rodgers had to persevere with Manquillo until Moreno is settled.
Johnson will also be able to return to the right again once Moreno plays.

To be fair, had Lalana and Markovic been fit, Rodgers would have more options late in the game.

Silver linings?
Lovren played well on his debut, Mignolet's save in the 87th minute was incredible, and 19-year-old Sterling was terrific. One goal, and one assist: http://youtu.be/dQOSNuKe6OI (commentary in Arabic  Grin )

533  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Murraycoin: sleeping giant? on: August 16, 2014, 07:47:49 AM

Could you please elaborate on this, specifically on what you mean by "yet"?

"Yet" means he might endorse the coin at some point, or he might not. The lead dev of Murraycoin has stayed in contact with the Murray Bros Foundation since Murraycoin's inception, and apparently they were in "sounds interesting, we'll think about it" mode but decided not to give the official endorsement at the time (around March, when they had the annual charity golf tournament). The idea is, however, that if Murraycoin becomes valuable and becomes sustainable on its own, the foundation stands to make a decent amount of money and it would be very plausible that Bill would endorse it and thus sending Murraycoin's value even higher.

If you have time, read through the pages of the Murraycoin announcement thread, the dev doesn't a pretty good job of explaining the situation at various points on the timeline since its release.

But anyway... think about those Bill Murray shirts & stickers that The Chive sells. They sell like hot cakes, I see them everywhere... Bill doesn't "officially endorse" The Chive but they have permission to use his face without paying him for it. However, The Chive is one of the sponsors of the annual golf tournament (i.e. they give money to the Murray Bros Foundation), so it's a mutually beneficial thing going on between the two.

(i) TheChive was approached asked to make those t-shirts. They have a contract.

(ii) Could you post the email from the Bill Murray Foundation here? If the content is as you say, you will see an immediate price spike.

(iii) Personality rights is no laughing matter. Just because Murray hasn't filed a suit against the dev, don't assume he won't. For all we know, he doesn't even know of Murraycoin's existence. After all, Murray is known to be a recluse. At one time, his agent mentioned that Murray lost out on a few roles because he could not be reached. Keep in mind that the Coinye dev was boastful during the early days, but when the legal letter came, he quickly disappeared.

(iv) If the Murray Foundation is interested to make money from crypto, what is stopping them from hiring a dev for a few thousand dollars and keeping all the premine to themselves, instead of hoping that some anonymous dev will donate something to the Foundation? Consenting to such an arrangement would also make the Foundation liable to any misrepresentation or wrongdoing on the part of the developer. I hardly think Bill Murray would be open to all of this.

Sorry, but as of now, this sounds really sketchy. You should advise the dev that there are few countries in the world that will protect him against a civil suit from an American court.
534  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin is below 5 USD ,what should I do on: August 16, 2014, 06:51:52 AM
It’s been a while since the dropping, people were talking in this forum ,about the price,  the asic and the future. I am a regular miner who have faith in crypto but can’t afford to lose everything I got just by my faith. There are so many topics about litecoin is dead or it’s not. What I really want to know are :
Litecoin is Now Below 5 USD ,what should I do?I got coins, not only LTC,Doge, even a small amount of Mona, should I sell them all or should I get more?
Asic factories are selling asic machines at a very low price now,is this a good opportunity to get some asics?

Please try not to spread FUD or giving hope for no reason.Thx.

How much did you buy it for?
If you acquired them between $10-$20+, what's the point in selling now? You might as well just hedge and HODL and hope the price will rise again.
If you got them for under $10, you could consider selling.
Either way, watch the price. Once it has bottomed out, you can reenter the market.

Can someone please explain me why Litecoin price dropped recently? (Sorry it's not your answer.)
Scrypt ASICs.
535  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Murraycoin: sleeping giant? on: August 16, 2014, 06:43:47 AM
<snip>
Bill Murray and the Murray Bros Foundation have not officially endorsed Murraycoin yet, but that's a very big yet. Murraycoin was given the green light as far as being its own separate entity, so it's not like there will be any Coinye-esque lawsuits.
<snip>

Could you please elaborate on this, specifically on what you mean by "yet"?

If Bill Murray, the star of iconic flicks such as Lost In Translation, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, GroundHog Day and many more, endorses this coin in any form, shape or manner, the marketcap will zoom pass all other coins except Bitcoin.
The dev doesn't even need to do any marketing - businesses will run to him.
That's how influential Murray is.

If I'm being honest here, I would say this is all BS. But I am prepared to be proven wrong.

I missed this post by Carsen Klock.

Would you list all the coins you launched so far?

Yes of course: My entry to the crypto-world in order is:
Timecoin (Scrypt based, terrible clone)
Matrixcoin (Sha256 based, terrible clone)
Hashcoin (X11 based, first animated logo, DGW V3, coin ended up forking due to no one updating to the latest wallet from all the FUD, coin could still work)
Dreamcoin (X11 based first PoW/PoS crypto I created, HUGE amount of FUD with threats, so I removed the coin to hurt the community because I was hurt, which was wrong, looks like community took it over though, still working)
Nebulacoin (X13 based PoW/PoS, Still lives on to this day)
Techcoin (X13 based PoW/PoS, Still lives on to this day, looks like the community is taking it over, fixing block times (it was too slow)).
Firecoin (X15 based first PoW/PoS, block times were faster, smoother launch, FUD killed it)
Isiscoin (X15 based PoW/PoS, smooth launch, hit Mintpal second day of ninja launch (No bribes were made), Premine was dumped before we hit Mintpal (which a lot of people thought i dumped on mintpal, I did not), HUGE FUD followed, along with government talk of Isiscoin, Death Threats, etc. Bad choice of name and bad launch date made me remove this coin, also because I do not support terrorism and that is what people were thinking. Just overall bad ideas on my end, My intention was the Egyptian god ISIS but as you all know, people twist things around)
Webcoin (X14 PoW/PoS, By far my best coin ever, Extremely stable, Smooth launch, Fair distribution)

Any other coin is not made by me, these are the only coins I have worked on.

538  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin being killed by ethereum dump on: August 16, 2014, 05:39:28 AM
Is there evident the price correction is due to Ethereum dumping or pure speculation at this point?

The blockchain address still show they have over 24k BTC, did they say what they are going to do with it?

They have moved out about 3,700BTC over the last five days.
However, I think the drop is not caused by this alone. It's a combination of several factors, though I believe the biggest of them all may be the Bitfinex margin calls.
The was a moment of panic when 650BTCs were suddenly sold significantly below market price.
It caused a short chain reaction that was exacerbated by Ethereum's 3,700BTC sell-off on a market already spooked by the proposed BitLicense framework announced by the New York State Department of Financial Services.
539  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 15, 2014, 01:47:32 PM
you are creating a precedent here. It is totally a centralized decision which will set a precedent in the future when and if crypto will be accepted as global currency. It will create the option for big entity to bring his mining power in action whenever a rolling back will be in his favour. This is an unwritten rule. Crypto stands for irreversibility not for lets take another look and if it doesn't suits us lets rewrite history by using latent forces of mining whenever a rolling back suits us.

crypto will never be accepted as a global currency with these types of things happening on a regular basis.  I can understand not wanting to roll back the entire blockchain, but the patch that just rolls back the hackers transactions is a very reasonable solution. There has to be some form of "justice" or anarchy will reign and no one outside the crypto community will take any of this as a serious option.

THANK YOU. Freezing a single transaction on the blockchain is perfectly reasonable and sane. What are we, hardcore buddhists that practice radical acceptance of some guy just running away with 5% of the world supply of NXT when we could have just launched a new wallet and denied those to him? If somebody has 5% of the world NXT to play around with, NXT is dead. If the NXT community lets this opportunity go because of some dogmatic ideological belief, NXT will look like a joke and will truely die. The fact we can do this is ADDED VALUE to the blockchain. If you want your transactions to be truely irreversible, then move to a crypto where that is the case (none of them) and stop bowing down the entirely fallacious altar of of the free market.

Jean-Luc just posted the limited rollback solution a short while ago (which I still don't understand btw, since it only disables outgoing TX from BTER's wallet, not the hacker's). This discussion precedes that by a couple of hours.
540  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: bter hacked and lost 50m nxt on: August 15, 2014, 01:34:20 PM

When?

August 15th, 2010

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=822.0

It's a different situation though. But it's possible.
Point conceded. It was a bug and patch, so yes, a different situation.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it is decentralized. In fact, centralization of mining power is one of the biggest concerns for BTC now. Further, I don't think BTC protocol allows rollbacks.

It's decentralized if no one entity has 51% power (or 90% when TF is implemented in a few months). There is no one entity in NXT that has 51% forging power. If forgers decide to download the modified release and do the rollback, then it's democracy in PoS style. BTC software could also be modified to do a rollback and if enough miners download it and reach 51% of mining power OR if enough miners decide to secretly mine a separate chain and reach 51% of mining power, they orphan all the other miners' blocks.

For some strange reason, you seem to equate the majority threshold and democracy as the benchmark for decentralization. It is not.
Further, don't keep snipping our conversations. Otherwise, I might forget you earlier claims such as BTC has done rollbacks before.
Also, your last two sentences seem to refer to forking.

I hate overquoting.

I think I stated clearly what centralization is - one entity holding 51% of the mining/forging power. This is not the case for NXT.

Yes, my last sentences refer to forking. So what's your question?

When it's relevant to our discussion, it's not overquoting.

You disagreed against my original statement, and now you're asking what's my question?
Once again, collusion of forgers/peers into a voting block in not decentralization.
Your definition of decentralization includes terms such as democracy and majority.
