It's mere speculation, by my guess is it's easily over a thousand dollars. .

Probably closer to a thousand bitcoins.  Some users have 10+ bitcoins or more tied up in the last couple days.  And Im sure there are easily hundreds of users now...

I have over 40 tied up.  This was Pirates last "Fuck you" the to community.

The timing of suddenly inviting everyone and anyone after months of no movement at all was simply too convenient.....right when BTCST went tits up.

Bumping this up......Still interested in 10-20 GH/s at the right price.

I have a 5970 that posts, boots into windows, and seems fine until i try to mine with it.

Make me an offer.

I will sell you 25 singles for 2,500 BTC

I don't want to troll too hard, but, could one of the GPUMAX users keep us up to date on the status of the outstanding miner payment that is now 56hrs past due, from Pirate's information/promise in the IRC chan....please ?

No payments since 8/26

thanks yochdog.

The 56hrs 'late' was originally referring to his promise of the 'midnight cleaning out of the system' promise for a couple days ago......whatever that meant.

This just continues to look worse and worse by the day.

Yes, the original promise was midnight on the 28th.....then yesterday he promised they were going out by the end of the day......and yet here we are.

Sound familiar?

1007  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] BFL single & 5970 on: August 30, 2012, 04:07:53 AM
Hey all,

I have a BFL single available.  It seems to have a problem hashing on both FPGA's 100% of the time.  One works perfectly, but the other cycles on and off.  I have heard this can be repaired by re-setting the heatsink, but I am not brave enough to try it.  It averages 600 MH/s.

The 5970 I want to sell boots fine to windows, but does not seem to like mining.  I am selling it with ZERO garauntee that it can be used to mine.  I give my word it will boot into windows or another OS, and that is it.

I would like 80 BTC for the single and 15 BTC for the 5970.
1008  Economy / Lending / Re: [FULFILLED!] 10,000 BTC loan - LONG TERM on: August 29, 2012, 09:39:59 PM
I hate to say it, but we need something like Bitcoinica. You could have taken out a long and been fine when USD/BTC doubled, and I could have taken out a short and been covered when BTC dropped from 15 to 8 Roll Eyes (For the record, I actually sold at 15, but holding BTC does make me want to hedge a bit.)

 Embarrassed

I used Bitcoinica to hedge this loan, and now I have nothing to show for it.

It still hurts.....
1009  Economy / Lending / Re: [FULFILLED!] 10,000 BTC loan - LONG TERM on: August 29, 2012, 09:30:26 PM
This is indeed awesome.

However it has occurred to me... and this actually is not really to do with you at all (or let us say, one surely hopes it is not)... how easy it could be for someone to just make stuff like this up. It'd be even better than pirateat40's bunch of OTC ratings of 10, it might never even occur to people to think anyone would make this stuff up.

SO I do hope that someday the big fish who made the loan does 'fess up, or something, so the next big scammer doesn't get to point at this great story to "prove" how "legit" his or her own great backstory is...

Again, I am not at all suspicious of this story.

It is the next one I am worried about...

I can understand that.  The lender is very well known on the forums, and has been part of Bitcoin since long before many of us even heard of it.

I asked if I could identify him publicly, but he prefers to stay anonymous.  I am guessing that is in part to avoid the deluge of requests that would flow his way should people know he can lend such amounts.

Fortunately for most deals that go down around here, both parties confirm it and the results are known to all.
1010  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: August 29, 2012, 06:44:37 PM
wait.

isn't interest on business debt tax deductible?   for a million bucks, i could come up with 50k in expenses pretty easily. not insignificant.

had to get my 2 bitcents in.

Well in that case, it just makes my point even more clear.  Matthew can only collect 15-30% if he is a whistle-blower......and any deductions will lower the amount collected by the IRS.
1011  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: August 29, 2012, 06:33:20 PM

No deductions..  i think not.

electric:
purchase computer;
purchase server:
internet:
etc etc

Well, for this example it is really meaningless.
1012  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: August 29, 2012, 06:22:17 PM
Actually...

500K btc @ MtGox high $11.21 = $ 5,605,000.00 total profit (his expenses are nothing in this scenario). Base tax rate with AMT adjustment on income over $ 350,000 = 63%, or $ 3,531.150. Maximum bounty on that amount of tax would be 30% or $ 1,059,345. Subtract Matty's expenses in paying off the wagers (35,443 @11.21 = $ 397,316) which nets to $ 662,028, if he loses.

And that is not accounting for any penalty for failing to report, not making his quarterly payments and all the other mischief the IRS would lump onto this case.

Peyote is not smoked, the strychnine analog is scraped off the dried buttons, and they are slowly chewed and swallowed. Alternately it can be brewed as a very astringent tea, although, personally, I find the high to be a great deal more subtle and less colorful when taken in liquid form.

Any other thoughts you would like to share?

ROFL.

You are completely full of shit.  The AMT is designed to keep high income parties from using deductions to lower their taxable income to such a point that they pay an obscenely low marginal rate.  It is a parallel system that runs alongside the normal rate schedule, hence the name ALTERNATIVE Minimum tax.  It is not a fee levied on top of the normally owed tax.  Thus, the maximum AMT tax rate is 28%.  Claiming it is even possible to get to a 63% rate immediately betrays the fact that you know nothing of what you speak.

Finally, Pirate would never fall into an AMT situation because he would have no deductions to begin with, and the effective rate on the "profits" would be nearly 35%.....thus leading to a higher tax than under AMT.

Go Google some more.

1014  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: August 29, 2012, 05:10:49 PM
http://www.irs.gov/compliance/article/0,,id=180171,00.html

At current US tax rates, assuming pirate is single and a US citizen, the reward for reporting this to the IRS, given that 100% of the gain from this activity is profit, the reward for turning his ass in would be $1,059,345.00 at today's Mt. Gox high exchange.

So, we know Matty is good up to 94,500 btc worth of bets. According to the google spreadsheet he still stands to make over $ 662,000 in net gain IF HE LOSES THE BET. If he wins, and Hell really does freeze over, he only makes $ 397,318.83. Either way, not a bad return for taking the piss on a bunch of anonymous loudmouths like this community.

And that dear friends, is what Machiavellian thinking is all about. Matty wants you to bet against him so that he wins more by losing more.

Matthew, I salute you! Well played.

Nice try.

The reward is based on the AMOUNT COLLECTED.  Anyone who thinks Pirate has the full amount of 5,000,000 just waiting to pay to the IRS is smoking Peyote.

Also, Pirate would only owe the TAX on the 5,000,000, not the entire amount.  So we are talking, AT MOST, about 2,000,000.....which would make the "reward" about 400K.

And that dear friends, is what googleing a subject and becoming an internet expert on tax policies in 10 seconds is all about.  He wants you to think he is smart, but really has no clue what he is talking about.
1015  Economy / Lending / Re: [FULFILLED!] 10,000 BTC loan - LONG TERM on: August 29, 2012, 04:50:17 PM
Another quick update regarding this loan:

Both the November and December payments have been made, and the next payment is not due until January, 2013.

On a side note, given the fiasco that is Pirateat40 and BTCST, perhaps it is time for lenders to be a bit more discerning in their lending and have more reasonable return expectations.  Someone offering 3,300% APR is either gambling with your money or has no intent to pay it back.

People bitch, moan, and attack me for the fact that I only offer 10% to my lenders.  Wake up people.....that is a reasonable rate.  Expecting more is silly and an invitation for scammers.

Example:  "Fuck you, I will never lend money at 10%!  Oh, this guy will offer me 2,000% per annum.....hell yes, take my money!"

A scammer is going to offer whatever it takes to part you from your funds.  To compare those rates with a loan that will ACTUALLY BE PAID BACK is the height of ignorance.

Just my .02 bitcents.
1016  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Its Official Pirate Has Defaulted!! on: August 29, 2012, 02:47:37 PM
People are still using GPUMax.  WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?

A lot of people are using it simply to manage miners......not engage in "leasing" shares.

correct me if i am wrong but they are submitting the shares to gpumax even if the web interface
is just used for managing miners?

shares == money in my mind when it comes to mining. why send them to a person who can manipulate
them for fun and profit and has a track record of stealing money?

The shares are directed to a private pool of the users choosing.....easy enough to verify that the correct amount of shares are showing up where they need to be.

The reason bitcoin is better is that when people win the financial Darwin awards they dont raise my tax to bail them out.

This is fucking brilliant.
1019  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Its Official Pirate Has Defaulted!! on: August 29, 2012, 02:05:13 PM
So let me get this straight.....Pirate has defaulted ?

I really wish someone could have warned me. I thought this was a helpful community.

I am devastated that our bromance is over already Bitlane.....I thought we had something special......

I truly am sorry...
I hope this clears it up..... thebaron gave me the following info:

http://blockchain.info/ip-address/108.89.10.213

(known Trendon Shavers/pirateat40 IP address, pulled from IRC Logs by thebaron)

My Pirate deposit address is found 7 times on the first page as an INPUT.

Feel free to follow some of the outputs to GPUMAX miner payouts.......

Transactions that were relayed first by the ip 108.89.10.213

No worries at all man.....it was well worth the 2 BTC

So is this info implying Pirate was using investor coin to pay-out GPUmax operators?  I cannot say this surprised me one bit.....I have suspected it for a while.
