I have noticed that too. Apparently there are wrong calculations...Which pool do you guys consider to be the best one right now?

Best pool by far is monero.crypto-pool.fr.

No one denies that's the largest pool, but largest doesn't mean best. On smaller pools your payments will be less frequent, but bigger. On the long run you should be getting more or less the same amount of XMR from each pool (it's also been said that you would be getting a little more from smaller pools, but I don't have the theory to back it up). But most importantly, if you avoid largest pools you will be helping to the decentralization by spreading the network's hash power.

You should look for a good pool with low latency in your location. Just make sure to ping the mining server address and not the web server, as they may not be in the same location. Also, if your mining software supports it, you should add a backup pool just in case your main pool becomes unavailable.

Is this accurate, with unknown + minergate = 58%?
http://minexmr.com/pools.html

Well... Right now MingerGate is pulling around 800 Kh/s, so that would leave the "unknown" at around 9.52 Mh/s (from the 10.32 Mh/s), which would be 51.74% from the total 18.4 Mh/s currently reported by that graph.

The "unknown" part would be the total hash not reported by any of the pools that minexmr.com is checking. I don't know if they are checking all the known pools. But, for example, Dwarfpool is not appearing on that graph, and they are currently pulling 2.5 Mh/s, so I would say that they are being accounted as part of the "unknown", which would give a more realistic unknown at around 38%.

https://github.com/warptangent/bitmonero/commit/35b1500536a98e02ea459ca6ccb42e8248de43a8
^^^
There is the code to restore a MyMonero wallet to simplewallet. Finding the right way to add it to master is the trick (as the derivation is a bit different to simplewallet) - do we stick to the current long-mnemonic derivation, and then use the MM derivation for short-mnemonics? Or do we provide a short version of the current long-mnemonic derivation, plus an extra short derivation for MyMonero-style keys?

Until we figure out the most appropriate way to integrate this it'll sit in this commit, but it can ALWAYS be integrated and released by any number of the 25 Monero core contributors in the event of MyMonero's sudden and unexpected demise:)

Good to know that Smiley

I want to say that I never meant anything in a negative way about MyMonero. I was just stating the things as I saw them. I believe MyMonero is very well done and provides a great service, and I never doubted that the seed/keys implementation would eventually come out Smiley . It's just that if I were to use MyMonero I would like to be sure that I can always access my funds, regardless of the availability of the service.

anyone know why moneroclub.com is off??

Ask atrides

It's been down for at least a couple of days.

This is untrue. If you use MyMonero, just backup your viewkey and spendkey, and you will always be able to recover your funds.

Yes, but right now only through MyMonero implementation, or am I wrong?
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: April 10, 2015, 06:11:56 PM
I have a question about MyMonero.com:

There is no way for me to get my coins from an account created there unless I send them from that account correct?

Yes, correct. As of today, If you created your account there, then you can only access your funds using MyMonero. At some point you may be able to import your keys from MyMonero in simplewallet, but that's not possible today.

On the other hand, what you can do right now is create a new wallet with simplewallet, login to MyMonero with your seed from simplewallet. Tell MyMonero to NOT import your previous transactions. Login to your original MyMonero account and transfer your funds to your new account created with simplewallet seed. That way you'll be able to use that new wallet with either MyMonero or simplewallet or any of the available GUI wallets (that rely on simplewallet).

Thank you, I wanted to make sure before I followed the line of thinking I was on. Now my second question is:

Can the funds/and or account on Mymonero.com be locked or removed/destroyed by Mymonero.com Admin? If indeed I created the account there.

You guys may see where I'm going with this but maybe not.

They can't touch your funds. But if for any reason MyMonero becomes unavailable and you created your account over there, then you wouldn't be able to access your funds until someone implements a way to import your keys from MyMonero into simplewallet, or until MyMonero comes back online. That wouldn't be the case if you login with a seed from simplewallet into MyMonero.

... So in the case that MyMonero ceased to exist, you could still have access to your funds.

That is a good point. So, I understood that it is relatively but not absolutely secure. I'll give MyMonero.com a try to check out Monero.

Also, as Arux said, you can create a wallet with simplewallet and use your 25 words seed to login to MyMonero. I though that for this you would have to pay 10 XMR, but that's only needed if you want to import your previous transactions, but since you would be using a newly created account there's no need to do that. So, this way you can use MyMonero but still access your funds with simplewallet if MyMonero is not available.

For this you would need to download the binaries and run simplewallet like:
Code:
./simplewallet --generate-new-wallet <your_wallet_file_name>

That will create your wallet and give you a 25 words seed. No need to run or sync the daemon.

Hello,
I consider to buy some Monero for the first time and took a look for a good wallet. I am wondering how secure MyMonero.com is? Is it like an exchange where all coin could be stolen without having the private key?

No, it's more like blockchain.info, the private key is only on the client side and never ever known to the website.

In addition:

MyMonero only has your view key, not your spend key, so no way to touch your funds without your involvement:)

PS: MyMonero is run by core developer Fluffypony

Also, not possible right now, but I believe that at some point you will be able to use your mnemonic seed (or your keys, not sure which) from MyMonero on simplewallet. So in the case that MyMonero ceased to exist, you could still have access to your funds.
30  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BuyMonero.net - BTC cost averaging on: April 09, 2015, 02:05:51 PM
Quoted from Monero ANN thread:
for simplicity sakes i go through the history of your executed polo orders to calculate our fee - if you use an existing account that would mean that your account starts with a negative balance

Couldn't you consider only the orders made after the user entered the API key at BuyMonero to calculate the fees on an existing account?

i did not do this, because i thought that if a user tries to use his existing account he will also continue trading with that account...and i have no way to detect that (i can make an educated guess buy manually looking into the polo-history - but i don't even store your poloniex trade history on my server)

so i see it as a way to get my users to make a new account which they dont touch.
(btw can we continue on this thread? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1017131). we are a little offtopic here.

Ok, that makes sense, I was just curious Smiley

Congrats on the new service!

Are you relatively new to monero? Viewkey and payment_ID are things unique to Monero (I think). There is no equivalent in bitcoin (because there is no need).

Maybe this is somehow off topic, still.. does viewkey actually work? Or is there some info I've missed about when is it planned to be done?

oh good point. I don't know. I just assume it works because its always talked about as one of the cool things about Monero.

The view key does work at the protocol level, although there is no implementation available to the user right now.

AFAIK (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the only known implementation is in MyMonero, which uses the view key to, I think, identify your transactions, thus giving MyMonero the ability to know your balance and the value of your transactions, but they still can't know where the coins come from or where they are going to, nor can spend them. That's the price you pay for the ease of use of MyMonero.

ShapeShift.io has added Monero (XMR) to Instant Altcoin Exchange

XMR users can now exchange instantly with Bitcoin and 25+ other altcoins with ShapeShift. No account needed.

Nice to see it finally implemented, hopefully this will bring more people into Monero.

You still get a better deal from https://xmr.to for your moneroj.

Something is wrong with the list of pools in the OP.

moneropool.com has been added at the end of the list, but the info displaying there is from monerohash.com, for which the info is empty now.

Why buy a $hitcoin like Monero when there's good quality code like NXT?   Huh

Well, If you talk about buying, I believe anyone would buy a coin hoping to make a profit Tongue. On the other hand if you talk about using and supporting, well... clearly we, Monero supporters, believe that privacy is important, and AFAIK no ther coin beats Monero on that matter right now.

EDIT to add: Also because of the quality of the dev team and the community.

Is there a way to mine with the CPU on a Mac? I have some friends who use iMacs who would like to mine

Certainly you can compile and use Wolf or lucasjones cpuminer. I'm not sure about yam or claymore precompiled versions.

Yam also has builds for Mac: https://mega.co.nz/#F!h0tkXSxZ!f62uoUXogkxQmP2xO8Ib-g

i use yam minerd xmr in centos, but "Error:no ..."Often,Cause abnormal program termination, and how to solve

Are you using a version compatible with your CPU?

Yam miner has a different binary for each CPU microarchitecture it supports (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Brige, Haswell, etc...). Make sure you are using the one built for your CPU, or try using the different binaries and see which one works (if any) and which performs faster.

You can download the latest version from https://mega.co.nz/#F!h0tkXSxZ!f62uoUXogkxQmP2xO8Ib-g , although some users have reported better performance/stability with previous versions. Here you have a previous one: ttps://mega.co.nz/#F!UlkU0RyR!E8n4CFkqVu0WoOnsJnQkSg

If none of them works, you can try using Wolf's miner from: https://github.com/wolf9466/cpuminer-multi

I have +200-1000 kh/s monero miners.
Is it better to mine solo with this hash power?
Can anyone tell me how to mine solo to only one wallet from many GPU's?

If you really meant KH/s (kilohashes/second), then you would be better off mining solo. To do that you would have to set up your own pool, which can be done by following the instructions on the README.md file from any of the open source pool forks which fluffypony already mentioned:

https://github.com/fancoder/cryptonote-universal-pool
https://github.com/sammy007/node-cryptonote-pool
https://github.com/perl5577/node-cryptonote-pool

If you meant H/s (hashes/second) and you want receive frequent payouts, then you should mine at a pool. You could still set up your own pool, but it could take several weeks to find a block depending on your luck.

And finally, if its KH/s and you still opt to mine at a pool, then it would be better for the network (and some would say that for you too) to mine at some of the smaller pools, and not one of the top.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Mining on: April 03, 2015, 09:02:27 PM
I haven't mined in over a year, and my 2 Radeon 7950's have just been collecting dust. I'm kind of interested in this though. What kind of kh/s are you guys getting with similar radeons, or how many coins a day? Is it worth it?

7950s get pretty good hashrate I think. THere was a google doc that had some numbers. The wattage of those things is a beast. At current XMR prices, u might be at profit though.

You'd probably be able to get ~1 xmr a day at the current network hashrate.

Here's the doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MI-ic0Os25hgGUImW54sUIjZY_pUNQNa_W8Se5pRGBs/edit#gid=1726706747
According to that you could be getting between 257 and 388 H/s on each card, depending on your configuration.

Feel free to point them to https://monerohash.com  Grin

my bitmonerod is stuck.  When I run it, I get this message (block 498962 was about 12h ago according to some explorer web site):

Additionally, when I run simplewallet, it says "Starting refresh" then hangs for ages and then says:

Error: refresh failed: no connection to daemon. Please, make sure daemon is running. Blocks received: 0

I don't really want to start again and download the whole blockchain.  Can anyone help with troubleshooting these issues?

Run the command "print_cn" on the daemon, that should give you a list of connected peers. If you don't see anything and you are on Windows, then it's likely to be a problem with bitmonerod being blocked by Windows' firewall.
