Any idea of how cheap the electricity needs to be in order for overclocking to be efficient? To rephrase the question: how many kWh does mining one bitcoin take on average and at what $/kWh cost does the electricity fees need to be in order to make that worthwhile (using 1 BTC = $5)?

OC away if your profitable.  Anything less then 0.26USD/kwH and you should be profitable.

1027  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Physical Silver ETF on GLBSE? on: April 17, 2012, 09:51:40 PM
..
I spoke with the person who would be managing/storing the silver and they indicated they get a copy of the Wall Street Journal every day. I would have him replace the WSJ every day and keep a camera attached to a router on the silver 24/7. Unfortunately he only has one secure internet connection running to the building, but I do have access to a relay, so I could actually provide 24/7 monitoring of the physical silver with a copy of the WSJ swapped out every morning via a website. I would also maybe take user input every day on what letter or number to have and have the WSJ marked with a black marker accordingly.

..

Sounds like ridiculous overkill for 5k of silver..  a .jpg every month or so with hot chicks in bikini's would be more then sufficient Wink

Now if it was like 5k face of junk silver, maybe monitering would be in order.

1032  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: GLBSE IPO Handling and Interaccount Transfers Discussion Thread. on: April 17, 2012, 03:58:12 PM
Although we don't have a hot swap system ready and waiting GLBSE is prepared for the unlikely event of the  server being shut down, we would be offline for a maximum of 3 days.

I can assure you that the FSA sees bitcoin as monopoly money and simply doesn't care.

Just because I happen to live in the UK doesn't mean that this is where GLBSE is operating from. The fact is it would be very difficult for any country to shut down GLBSE (being as we have no bank accounts to be frozen or physical assets to seize).

Unlike the U.S. the British government (if they could ever care) would find it very difficult to prosecute a British citizen for running a virtual stock exchange, not even based in the UK, priced in (what they classify as) imaginary money.

We're not out there on the streets pushing for 20 year old single mothers to invest their life savings. We offer this service as is, and don't even advertise it, it's almost exclusively used by members of this forum.

This doesn't even start to become an issue until the volume of trade on GLBSE starts going into the millions, when the tax man starts to take an interest.

But as was mentioned we could always move to Tor if we wanted to, for the time being GLBSE is fine.

Awesome post..  A virtual exchange priced in imaginary money..  Your busted!!!

NOT Wink

1037  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 7870 mining speed, over 400 Mhash/s ?! on: April 16, 2012, 10:46:51 PM
Hello, i just got my 7870 Sapphire 1 Ghz Eddition today and overclocked it to 1.1 Ghz (i think it could easy do 1.2 ghz or even 1.3 ghz)

im using 12.3 drivers and 2.6 SDK (for some reason i have no 100% cpu bug, (i use an 5850 and the new 7870).

and right now with " -v -w256 -f0 " in guiminer i get 403 Mhash, and my p2p is showing the increase in speed too!

anyone else can confirm this performance?

Nice!
