843  Economy / Speculation / Re: To Roth or not to Roth? on: May 17, 2012, 02:46:26 PM
Note that I don't mean Roth IRA vs Traditional IRA -- I've already decided Roth is better.

I mean Roth IRA vs Bitcoin.

What say you?

Right now I'm in both to diversify. The more time that passes, however, the more confidence I gain and the more % of my assets I move into Bitcoin. But I haven't cracked my IRA at all to buy BTC, but sometimes I wonder why I have it if the government may decide to confiscate it some day anyway ( hey, Argentina has done it, as well as many other countries that got into financial problems... )

You make over 6 figures? If you don't Roth is probably going to cost you money.  Roth will only cost you less if you will have a very large IRA at retirement.

I wouldn't even dream of putting a significant chunk of retirement monies into BTC.  If BTC goes really mainstream, a few thousand USD into it now will turn into millions later.  BTC has several risk factors that could take it to near zero...

Your information on a Roth is wrong.  The tax savings of a Roth has nothing to do with the account value or making over 6 figures.

A Roth is highly beneficial to young professionals in the long term.  The idea behind a Roth is that early on in a young person's career, that person will be making less money and his contributions to the Roth are taxed at a low rate.  Once the person reaches the age for qualified distributions from the Roth, he will theoretically be taxed at a higher rate (having advanced in his career, making more money, putting him in a higher tax bracket).  Since the distributions in a Roth IRA are tax free, the person has saved money by the contributions be taxed at the lower tax rate of the person's younger years.

With a Roth your betting that your post retirement tax bracket will be higher then the your pre retirement tax bracket.  Unless you have a big fat amount in your IRA, your post retirement tax bracket will be LOWER then your pre retirement tax bracket.  So unless your making alot of money to have a very large IRA you DO NOT want a Roth IRA.

That theory of an advancing career is becoming more and more of a pipe dream in this economy.  Lots and lots of folks are losing their jobs and having to take lower paying ones.

My information on Roth is entirely correct.  Lots of folks end up giving the government their taxes now at a higher rate then they would pay at retirement, because they just know they will have a perfect career and a big huge nest egg at retirement.....

Sounds about right for 860 or 880..

Run them at 1000.  You'll get over 300MHs

I'll get to today's update this afternoon.  Sorry for the delay Wink

LOL!  everyone loves to irritate each other around here.  no problem, Sir!  Wink

btw, where's my Silverbox update?  and don't fudge the figures! Wink

Whats the point of keeping score if you fudge the numbers!!

this thread was started 3/13

Bitcoin  5.40

Gold 1690.

today 5/16

Bitcoin 5.07   (down ~6%)

Gold 1540  (down ~9%)

BTC still isn't up .  Gold for the first time since this thread was started 2 MONTHS ago is doing worse then BTC.  I still fail to see this collapse.. an orderly decline over 2 months of 9% is what I see.

AAPL 546  (If some updays don't show up soon, your gonna win this one)

Edit:  Cypher is actually partially right this week, if 2 months ago you took his advice and sold gold to buy BTC, you would have been losing money till this week.
848  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: May 16, 2012, 05:27:28 PM
gold bugs should know better.  when the news finally becomes mainstream, it's already too late...

I'm still considered something of a freak amongst my friends and co-workers due to my interest in actual physical PMs.  Even my Indian ones interestingly enough.  It is anything but mainstream.  Of course my interest in Bitcoin simply confirms their suspicions.

Ditto.  In all my informal polls of my coworkers, friends and family.  Nobody is invested in PMs.  One of my family members is a financial planner with 100s of clients,  only a handful own any mining or PM related etf/stocks..

if gold gets below 1523, all Hell is gonna break loose...

Yeah the Chinese will be filling their vaults..

No, we won't. As all human being around the world, we like to invest in something that is in a rally sell others in a crash.

The Central banks disagree with you..

When they can print gold, I'll believe this crash theory Wink

well, I can only something like "Lombardi believes"... there is no evidence. just speculation that Chinese central bank are buying.

Great news for you but sadly that the import of the Gold in 2012Q1 is as 5 times as 2011Q1 for China. However, in my opinion, it's not rare for any group of people (including the the Chinese people) buying at the top of a bubble. Chinese buying gold at 2012Q1, this is one vivid case that any bubble has someone buying at the top.

When the gold bear is more clear, we will see what will Chinese people do.

+1

Sure when I hear the news that they are stoppin the presses (and the deficit spending) and pegging USD to gold, I'll know the bull is done and I'll probably have missed the peak.  Till then, this is a Bull market boys and girls Wink

I like how gold bounced nicely today off that low.  A bit of sanity returns Wink

Not really Wink.  I have zero need to sell anytime in the next few years.
854  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: brace yourself... difficulty is about to increase, a lot on: May 16, 2012, 12:33:09 AM
I actually think it's a shame that difficulty has increased this much for relatively so few miners. As I said in my cgminer thread, the original vision of bitcoin mining was that anyone who wanted to use bitcoin could also contribute a few spare hashes to make the network more secure and gain a few bit cents along the way. The fact that it is getting harder every day to justify throwing any computing power to make those few bit cents and it is becoming the domain of "professional setups" is far from that original vision. I know human nature will tend to concentrate on the profit side of things and they will always try to find a way of increasing said profit, but it's still a shame.

Still be plenty of peeps mining with free power, or who use the waste heat to heat their homes.

Also I think there will be small miners who are converting electricity into bitcoins, its still a pita to convert small amounts of fiat into BTC, if you just need a lil bit and have a decent gpu, its easier to just mine it even if the power costs the same or slightly more then the value of the BTC.

856  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unable to send coins on: May 16, 2012, 12:28:11 AM
Try sending a small amount (like .0001) to a different address, I vaguely recall reading that you can't send to an invalid address.
857  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unable to send coins on: May 15, 2012, 11:30:50 PM
Are you typing in your encryption password?

Are you cut and pasting the send to address?  Does it have a leading or trailing space in the cut and paste? (If so, elminate any spaces)

Looks like my questions may be answered sooner than I thought - silver and gold are getting annihilated while bitcoin is stable. I just stumbled across this article as well:

Thats not really true..  BTC and gold over the last 2 months have declined almost the exact same amount.   and if you look at the chart for the last 12 months, btc is anything but stable whereas gold has been trading in a fairly narrow range.

i've let you pick the beginning of this thread as a base for OUR comparison but don't hold him to that.

why don't we pick the mid November low in Bitcoin @ $2 and compare to gold from there?

Or pick the high in BTC of $30 Wink..  Its been all over the place the last 12 months, gold has traded from ~1500-2000 a nice stable range..
