Since no one gave any suggestions, just thought I'd let you know I'm going to try moving everything over to a Debian configuration.
To the best of my knowledge, it should work without any issues to run Cgminer and XBMC it's two main purposes on there.
Ubuntu, may have been the popular choice, but going back to a more stable and reliable OS, rather than user friendly one, will hopefully help.

Lethos,

I'm using ubuntu _server_ 12.04, and I'm not sure I do understand you correctly, but if you're running it from an USB stick I'd try to run it from an old HD or a SSD (small ones are cheap these days).

I'd also try not to use it as an HTPC at the same time.

If you try, install just the base server, and the ia32 libs.

No X server, no fancy desktop and so on.

Problems = parts^2. Smiley

spiccioli

Already tried that, that was the first things I tried when I did a fresh install of Ubuntu.
Why it's not working I don't know. But I've given up trying to fix it with in Ubuntu.
My only other options left after this is to assume it's not a software problem, but a hardware one.

did Satoshi Nakomoto predict companies customizing hardware that will outhash the average person's GPU and thus turn the people holding bitcoin into large capital surplused institutions?

He'd be pretty naive if he didn't foresee a future where people would strive for better performance and faster hash rates, or at the least improvements in efficiency.
After all FPGA's and ASIC have been used for exactly that in many other similar industries since they were first designed, to do relatively simple tasks ridiculously fast, that were once done by CPU's, sometimes even entire server farms of computers.
I doubt anyone expected it to happen this fast of course, from it's early days around when he disappeared.

I use Ubuntu 12.04 (64bit) to run my CM1 boards. Not that long ago I run an pretty usual update of various files, as it had been bugging me.
After restarting I found that every time I plugged either of the boards via usb, the system would kinda go through a system crash, everything would slowly stop working.
Commands wouldn't work in the terminal, the GUI would slowly start disappearing and eventually it would do nothing, even though it still responded to basic input, even if it didn't respond with what it should.
It left me no choice but to restart. Everything is fine upon restart as long as I don't plugin the boards back in. It still works fine as a HTPC (XBMC).

I figured one of the USB or FTDI drivers, lib files etc cause the problem, like it got corrupted or one hell of a bad bug. They were just updated but I had no luck tracking down what exactly was the fault, a lot of files were updated and doing my best to revert back didn't work. No one else seems to be reporting a similar bug so assumed it was just an isolated event.

So I backed everything up to my storage unit that was needed and rebuilt Ubuntu, to pretty much the same configuration I had before. That seems to go fine, I didn't remember all of it, but search feature is very useful on these boards, think I got everything.

Problem is, same issue occurred once I got everything redone on a new usb stick. So it's no longer looking like a corrupted file, can't imagine it happening twice in a row like that, on a fresh 8Gb usb stick.
It happens with both CM1 boards, either one can trigger it to happen. I've done a gentle clean of dust off it and they appear to be operating fine.
It has not effected the use of my wireless mouse or usb pen in any of the slots, so I am still assuming it is a software issue, not hardware.

Anyone came across something like this happening before?
Yes it's frustrating I've not been able to mine for a few days, but I get frustrated more when there is something I can't fix.

Just to make sure it's repeated enough times.

If you are not a gamer (you stated this). Don't invest in GPU's now, it's too late, difficulty is rising to levels that only ASIC's and only for a short period FPGA's are affordable and will give any decent ROI.

A GPU's only ROI is what you can resell it for, not for mining over the next 2 months. Considering any GPU bought now will only lower in price when it comes to reselling it, it's going to be a either going to be a lose overall or break even even after 2 months of mining.

A corrupt society always punishes those that seek to improve it.

Hope you are not imply his most reaction action was an act seeking to improve "our" society?
Pretty sure he did it for his own entertainment and maybe even profit.
More recent logs of him talking about it prove at least the first part.
The second part is pretty much the nature of gambling, bets, hedging what ever you want to call it.
387  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: ¿¿How does BTC appear to the legitmate BTC using community?? on: September 10, 2012, 08:04:34 AM
I think it's tarnishes the name of BTC more than when people use cash to buy the same thing.
That in it self is the problem, when it is reported and talked about.

So I don't like it is used for illegal purposes, but there is nothing that can be done about and probably shouldn't be.
You are not as anonymous as you think using BTC, it's just the latest exchange medium that has drawn strangely high amounts of attention for it's scale of use. It's a currency / commidty, it's not the fault of bitcoin if it's used to buy illegal things, any different than any other currency / commodity.
388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Response on: September 10, 2012, 07:58:22 AM
In hindsight, I no longer see this bet as being funny and I think it was in horrible taste. The community members who were my friends who are standing up against this are right in doing so I and I have no place in the bitcoin community as I clearly don't take it as seriously as everyone else. I am happy to have learned so much from Bitcoin and I'm glad to have shared in many experiences as well, but I cannot discount the claims that I have some issues with manicism as there is no other explanation for my often irrational behavior. I'll be seriously looking at my life and exiting from the community with my sincerest apologies.

Mihai Alisie will be speaking for the Bitcoin Magazine at the London conference. I am in the process of exiting the company completely equity and all in addition to already having resigned as a director and Editor in Chief, as it seems the right thing to do for the future of the magazine.

Ellet's IP is being handed over to a more capable party and I will be exiting any involvement with it.

DCAO is being dismembered and the existing heads will start another organization a bit more seriously toned.

I will not be involved in any businesses in this community any longer. It is clear my immaturity is hurting the community more than I am helping it, and the position I have been in has only resulted in hurting myself and those around me. I'm glad to see that many people did get my joke, but I ask that they not defend me as even I see now that it was crossing all sorts of lines that should never have been crossed and I have absolutely no excuse for it.

I'm sorry I let so many people down that I never even realized actually cared and I hope I can somehow serve as an example of what not to do so that all of this was not a complete waste.

I will now leave how I came.

I always watched what you did without saying much about. I'm not one for the Drama, which you often loved getting involved in.
You had the chance to do a lot with your position and by your own admission your immaturity got the better of you.

Apologies are a bit late coming, but I hope this has made you learn the hard way that it's not the best way to act.
People don't forget when you do what you did on this scale, just because you said sorry.

This is something you going to have to live with, that you can't just sweep under the rug at a later date.

Made some small adjustments on the URL used with the tny.im url service.

Instead of relying it to give me the next available url, It should be more random, but longer. Usually 4 or 5 characters.
This does not effect any previously used urls of course.
390  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help! Serious Noob mistake! on: September 06, 2012, 11:05:39 PM
Ouch, hope this teaches you a lesson.
When sending large amounts of money, pay attention to what your doing.

By all means, it be very nice of the owner of that address to refund you. But I got to admit that address is well use to donations.
Even 10Btc might go unnoticed.
391  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Another 2.5TH jump overnight ? on: September 06, 2012, 09:26:41 PM
There is a lot of FPGA developers who are still shipping out (sometimes in large amounts) their products, even with ASIC on the horizon, they are still taking this long to get into the hands of the masses.

While many people who only mining tool are GPU's are realising that they have about 2-3 months left, after that they are worthless so making sure they are online and mining as much as possible.

It stands to reason that the Network is going to keep going up. It is a little worrying how quickly, but totally expected.
392  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: anoMsg - Anonymous Message on: September 06, 2012, 01:29:17 PM
I was thinking about not doing it automatically, but have the user manually request a payout only if the earnings are higher than a certain amount (because of transaction fees). I also see that blockchain.info changed the merchant API and deprecated some of the methods I used, so I'll need to completely rework the internet toll system (also, I'll need one more database on my side because now blockchain.info wants a single address for everything, and now I'm creating one address per short link per visitor).

Probably a good choice until you reworked it to the changes already in play.
393  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: anoMsg - Anonymous Message on: September 06, 2012, 12:27:25 PM
First of all, thanks for choosing tny.im and its internet toll service. Unlike what people said in the announcement thread in this forum, it's actually proving useful for some people.

Also, looks like you learned to use the API on your own, which is great. Tell me if you need any help.

I really should automate payouts from the internet toll service, as now they're done manually. Perhaps some kind of page where people insert the Bitcoin address they used when they created the link(s), and then they're able to see how much is left to pay out and can click a button to make the transaction (w/ transaction fees deducted from their earnings, of course).

Yeah the API was not too hard to figure out, the api example could do with an update though.  At least my code my prove as a good example.

Automation is nice when it works, just take your time to make sure it's secure. There is a small pool that has a small auto-payout system and it has no registration like your service. How he automates it works out quiet well. http://hhtt.1209k.com/
Quote
Payouts will occur based on the following rules:
If the balance for an address is greater than 0.25 BTC and the last payout was more than 24 hours ago, a payout is done.
If the balance for an address is greater than 0.01 BTC and the last payout was more than 3 days ago, a payout is done.
Payouts are automatic and cannot be requested. These rules are run at the start of each hour.
I get paid about the same time every day, because I always fill the min payout for a 24 hour payout. Something to consider.
394  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Simplest way to stash bitcoin? on: September 06, 2012, 12:02:46 PM
In your position I would consider looking at some of the long-term offers to deposit into. It means a bit of risk of course, but one could say having someone else look after it for you, is avoiding the risk you were actually worried about. Just stick to the low interest stuff.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=88.0

That is THE worst advice I've ever seen given in response to "how to stash my coins".  Giving your coins to someone else to hold has way more risk than printing out paper wallets or running from a LiveOS, etc.

There is a reason why I said, the above I bolded in case you missed it. If she is not very tech savy, it's at least an option to trust someone else to look after it. It takes a lot more experience to do things like running a wallet from a LiveOS.
Just learning how to move bitcoins around to buy/sell them is probably all she wants to do.

If she full admits to not being tech savy, which one is more likely?
- She loses everything by something he did to his wallet or pc or means of storage.
- Well known person like Patrick walks of with his deposit.

In my experience of tech support, I can almost guarantee how frequently my non-techy friends end up need my help to fix a major issue over the course of a year. One of my worst is 4-5 times a year, some are more like 1 a year. Oh how I wish teaching them what or not to do helped, some learn, some don't.

By all means call my advice the worst. She can ignore it if he wants, I'm sure she will if it's so bad.
395  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: anoMsg - Anonymous Message on: September 06, 2012, 11:45:35 AM
I got some anom feedback. Not use to this.

They liked the idea, they also like your link service, so I merged the services a little.
I know the mods don't like short links, so I won't use that as an example here.

Messages can be left now with a X number of hits before they expire.
If you do bulk less than 5, it works exactly as before, if you ask it to expire after more than 5 hits, it will only provide a tny.im link.
That link has to be paid for first (the sender or receiver does not matter).

http://anomsg.lethosdesigns.com/sub-bulk.php

Pretty sure I've ironed out all the bugs, but until I do, it's run from a separate page and made the fee just 0.0001 btc (I think).

But if you want to invest in bitcoin, it really pays to learn about it. So I wouldn't put any money into bitcoins, until you know what you are doing and definitely start with smaller numbers to learn.

Payments seem to be working again.  I was curious what difficulty people were using, so I calculated it out.... fractional difficulties are from people that changed their mind or experimented with different ones:

I also calculated the average share price.

11.3344 Diff ohhh yeah ! I'll settle on one eventually Smiley Still playing with them.
398  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: anoMsg - Anonymous Message on: September 05, 2012, 03:15:29 PM
Well, I tried it, it's interesting but what about an option to specify how many times the message can be viewed before it is destroyed?

http://anomsg.lethosdesigns.com/rec.php?rec=1&r=6jzjeIiqi7eusam

I can consider that an option. Wouldn't be too hard, to me the default would still be 1.
As it would require some work, If another agrees this is a good addition, I will go ahead with implementing it.
399  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: anoMsg - Anonymous Message on: September 05, 2012, 02:45:37 PM
Looks good there's something similar but for relayed online chat here: https://crypto.cat/

While interesting and one could say similar, not really the place be advertising another service.

Submitted messages can now be received by URL as I first intended to be done.

So their is now too options;
The first implementation which was just a hashcode to submit to the site.
The second, allows you to just use a URL for ease.
