541  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitparking PPCoin Exchange [closing] on: April 05, 2013, 07:12:05 PM
Hi Chris, we all really appreciate your hard work which greatly helped the ppcoin market in its infancy.

Your work in the bitparking ppc exchange will always be remembered by the ppc community. Hope to see you again soon with other quality projects!

Hey, does anyone know how I can unlock my PPCoin wallet so that I can generate POS without jeopardising my wallet (So that a my balance can't just be emptied)

Also, Sunny, any chance you can make a locked wallet generate POS without unlocking a wallet (Kinda of like how you can solo mine coins with Bitcoin without having to unlock the wallet file)

Thanks

Add a 'true' at the end of walletpassphrase command:

ppcoind walletpassphrase <your_passphrase> <unlock_time_duration_in_seconds> true

In this 'mint-only' unlock mode, one cannot send transactions but can mint blocks (including both proof-of-work and proof-of-stake).

It's more secure than the general unlock mode but less secure than a locked wallet.

I'm just unlucky, or the faucet at the official website is dead from long ago?

Faucet should be running, but it only distributes to about 10 users a day so it's gonna be hard to get given the explosion of interest the last few days.

hello,
  downloaded client, installed OK>

started it about 10 minutes ago... only 1 client connected, and it has downloaded 0 blocks so far...  files in the conf  folder look ok.

anyone know of some nodes i can add?

update: did an addnode in the conf file, and now I have 4 connection and chain started download..

Oops I think our seed node reached capacity. I just restarted it you should be able to connect now.

I will try to order another server for seed node tomorrow.

P.S. Anyone volunteers to have a server node listed in dns?

what about nvc premine?

I don't really discriminate against premined/taxed cryptocurrencies as to whether I would help them or not, if they can survive the market backlash that is. To give Balthazar some credit, the destruction of 110K premined coins is an action not every altcoin operator would take.

As I said, I would even help an altcoin that I strongly dislike.

This week novacoin hit a protocol issue which required update. I have helped Balthazar to switch the protocol....

Is NVC a concurent of PPC ?
I protested to minning NVC on SOLO mining, when it was easy to mine, because it has relased only in russian forum, and was premined.
Now YOU help NVC ?

I try to help all altcoins irregardless whether I like them or not myself, yeah even for novacoin which is a fork of ppcoin, I know many other people would outright hate copycat projects of their creation but I have a different mindset. I think many of us don't yet realize that even though we are competing against each other in the market, we are really all part of a big team leading the world into a new era.

is there some error with http://www.proofofstake.com/ ?

at the Minted Daily chart, it looks like there are 0 coins minted since March the 20th, that can't be right , no?

Looks like Andy's site hasn't been updated.

Support for getblocktemplate and sendblock are the only blockers for my pool to have stratum on PPC. Currently at almost 500 Ghash/s on getwork is causing some strain with the setup I have unfortunately. That and the memory leak. I've set ppcoind to be restarted every two hours to stop crashes due to that.

Happy to know you have a workaround in place for now.
549  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [TRC] [DISCLOSURE] Terracoin Difficulty Collapse Exploit on: April 04, 2013, 09:59:49 PM
Thank you SunnyKing for pointing this out to the TRC dev's!

Best way to thank me is for the terracoin fans to stop trashtalking ppcoin just because we are in competition. I advocate competing fairly with positive spirit.

Thanks,
550  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [TRC] [DISCLOSURE] Terracoin Difficulty Collapse Exploit on: April 04, 2013, 09:53:07 PM
Is this the same exploit I published on a while ago that was seen recently?

No. Yours is a limited oscillation. This one would collapse it to 0.
551  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [TRC] [DISCLOSURE] Terracoin Difficulty Collapse Exploit on: April 04, 2013, 09:46:58 PM
Following is a summary of the Terracoin vulnerability I communicated to Gavin and Terracoin developer. It is now fixed in the latest Terracoin release.

Summary: Possible manipulation of difficulty by a miner collusion, or a direct 51% attack, to collapse the difficulty and block generation interval to almost 0.

Impact Level: Critical.

Description: because terracoin employed a very short adjustment interval of 30 blocks, while the target spacing is 2-minute, below is what I come up with as an experimental attack scenario (not tested yet but just for illustration purposes for now). The way the attack works is that a miner collusion attempts to artificially inflates the time span of each retarget section. When the collusion gains momentum theoretically for terracoin I think the difficulty will collapse and block spacing drops close to 0. This is because terracoin 1) didn't fix the time travel vulnerability 2) used a too short retarget interval.

552  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [PPC] [DISCLOSURE] Stake Generation Vulnerability on: April 04, 2013, 09:09:59 PM
Actually, my friend lost over 50k in apparently incorrect stake generation. Sunny King has been notified of this potential bug.

553  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ppcoin POW exposure on: April 04, 2013, 07:57:58 PM
Yes, that is known as Moore's Law and is explained in the design paper.

Right, but you didn't address what happens to PPC if the hash rate suddenly plummets, for instance, if there is some economic destabilization unrelated to PPC's code which causes people to stop mining.  Because of the exponential increase in PPC's reward as hardcoded, if the rapid generation of PPC is large enough won't the PoS system eventually be compromised by the PoW system?

The reduction is reasonably slow, 16x difficulty = 1 halving. Yes the mint rate would pick back up if hash rate drops, but over a period of time it just average out.

As I said, the mint rate design is very low future inflation comparable to bitcoin, but with non-deterministic money supply. It more closely resembles gold actually in my opinion.

555  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PPCoin is now third only to Litecoin and Bitcoin for market cap! on: April 04, 2013, 06:38:37 PM
Okay, so stake blocks should be generated every 10 minutes across the entire network.  So, given a hypothetical userbase of 10k users all with mature coins, all competing for stake blocks, how is it decided who is allowed to mint a stake block in each 10 minute window?

It's described in design paper.

556  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PPCoin is now third only to Litecoin and Bitcoin for market cap! on: April 04, 2013, 06:31:43 PM
Sunny King, while you're here, please explain to me the rate of stake block generation and what the target is (what the target rate of number of stake blocks is per day).  I'm having trouble finding it in your PDF.

10 minute target for proof-of-stake blocks.
557  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PPCoin is now third only to Litecoin and Bitcoin for market cap! on: April 04, 2013, 06:17:42 PM
Ah, I see.  This was one of my problems with the chain.  So you just modify the amount at the corresponding address to add the new value in?

If you generate stake coins from a sum of multiple input addresses, are the stake coins generated amongst all of them?

It's in the coinstake transaction, output value > input value, but the reward does not have its own output so there is no dust involved.
558  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PPCoin is now third only to Litecoin and Bitcoin for market cap! on: April 04, 2013, 06:14:15 PM

Transaction fees are 0.01 per kb, but in many cases (small sums of PPC) the stake generated per block is many magnitudes less than this quantity.  These micro quantities of PPC pile up over time, bloating your input transactions when you try to spend them and resulting in more fees to spend the inputs than the inputs are collectively worth.

The 0.8% per year yielded by stake only benefits people holding huge amounts of PPC, and even then it only provides a mild incentive to generate stake blocks.

This is a misunderstanding. The stake reward does not have its separate output. It's added to the original amount.
559  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: TRC - thoughts on my meme? on: April 04, 2013, 06:03:39 PM
You are mistaken, spacegoat. ppcoin's inflation is controlled by Moore's Law. In fact the current inflation estimate comparison is:

currency     annual inflation rate estimate (Apr 2013)
bitcoin        12%
litecoin       60%
ppcoin        40%
terracoin   250%

do the math.

Sunny King, do you have any plans to introduce new stuff from bitcoin 0.8 i.e. getblocktemplate, getrawtransaction etc ?

Yes bitcoin 0.8 features are planned for next release.
