341  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Prerelease Announcement - Introducing Prime Proof-of-Work on: June 29, 2013, 12:10:59 AM
This is the first virus complaint of ppcoin so please report detail in ppcoin thread. The official ppcoin release is built through the same build tool that bitcoin uses (gitian-builder) so that other developers can verify the integrity of the release binaries. Primecoin release will also be built with gitian-builder with published signatures.

My antivirus tells me there is some kind of suspicious activity when I try to download a wallet of this type of coin, so I don't get involved in this type of coin. ppcoin and bitgem both have wallets that had viruses
342  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Prerelease Announcement - Introducing Prime Proof-of-Work on: June 29, 2013, 12:03:16 AM
Looks pretty interesting. My miner is is ready. Can you have pool software / mining software ready at launch?

No pool software. It's up to the market to develop those later. Release will be client wallet solo mining only. No external miner.
343  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Prerelease Announcement - Introducing Prime Proof-of-Work on: June 29, 2013, 12:01:28 AM
Design details will be available some time before release.

I'd like more information about this prime number based proof of work scheme please.
344  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Prerelease Announcement - Introducing Prime Proof-of-Work on: June 28, 2013, 11:57:54 PM
Maybe I have missed something new among the sea of clones, but who is the first non-hashcash proof-of-work that you are referring to?

Some API would be preserved some would be impacted, especially those mining related. Although I haven't looked into it yet the release is client wallet solo mining only.

If I understand correctly, this will be the second non-hashcash crypto-currency to achieve beta.

Looking forward to it.

Will you provide backwards compatibility at the daemon for existing crypto currency infrastructures?

(Similar RPC-JSON interface especially?)
345  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Prerelease Announcement - Introducing Prime Proof-of-Work on: June 28, 2013, 11:07:15 PM
I am happy to announce that the primecoin project is now close to beta quality and will be released to public soon. Please keep in mind this is experimental technology and we reserve the rights to rollback or restart the blockchain should severe bug/vulnerability require such actions. However we would try our best to avoid such scenarios and further develop it into reliable public infrastructure.

Introducing primecoin

  • First non-hashcash proof-of-work in cryptocurrency, pure prime number based proof-of-work
  • Cpu mining at launch, gpu mining to be developed by market participants
  • Pure proof-of-work, no proof-of-stake (unlike ppcoin), not energy efficient, but with additional potential scientific value derived from proof-of-work energy consumption (energy multiuse)
  • Scarcity enforced by Moore's Law similar to ppcoin, mint rate gradually drops as difficulty rises, without sudden halving shock
  • Security model similar to bitcoin
  • Continuous difficulty adjustment like ppcoin
  • Reasonably high starting difficulty to limit instamining
  • 1 minute target block spacing
  • Zero premine, zero tax

ppcoin + primecoin

  • Sharing the same goal of real innovations, moving cryptocurrency technology forward and demonstrating our technical capabilities
  • Sharing the same value, open source, no premine, no tax, advancing cryptocurrency technology for humanity
  • Cpu mining initially for primecoin to cater to a larger mining community, now covering all mining hardwares with both ppcoin (gpu+fpga+asic) and primecoin (cpu)
  • New innovations in primecoin catering to a wider audience including the mathematical and other scientific computing community, and users who prefer pure proof-of-work cryptocurrencies.
  • Sharing development resources and infrastructures
  • Different innovative cryptocurrency designs provide cryptocurrency investors with diversified advanced technology portfolio
  • Strategic positioning for the next 5 years in cryptocurrency market

ppcoin vs primecoin

  • ppcoin is our first innovative cryptocurrency design to focus on energy efficiency. Almost a year after its release ppcoin's design remains the only proof-of-stake design on the market, with seven forks/clones (NVC, BTB, YAC, BTG, BOT, CGB, YAB). primecoin is our second innovative design to focus on alternative proof-of-work system producing additional scientific values. The two networks would work in synergy to achieve our long-term cryptocurrency strategy.
  • Cryptocurrency market has now split into two sectors, energy intensive sector and energy efficient sector. In the longer term (5+ years) I believe the energy efficient sector would begin to challenge the energy intensive sector due to its cost advantage. In the shorter term though energy intensive market would likely remain dominant and we would like to have an innovative and competitive offering in this sector as well. The innovations in primecoin give us this opportunity, and would complement ppcoin to strengthen our strategic position in the market.
  • The energy intensive sector currently has two major types of proof-of-work, both of the hashcash type, one is SHA-256, the other is scrypt. There have been some new variations of the hash functions recently, with modified scrypt and SHA-3 series hash functions as well, or even compositions of different hash functions. Though existing cryptocurrencies are all still based on hashcash proof-of-work. primecoin introduces the first non-hashcash proof-of-work in cryptocurrency, the first type of proof-of-work that not only secures the block chain, but also provides additional potential scientific value, paving the way for future proof-of-work types with more diverse scientific interests and uses.
  • Both ppcoin and primecoin demonstrate our design prowess and capability in real innovations. We are fully dedicated to provide long term support and further development to both cryptocurrencies.
  • For existing ppcoin users our dedication to the continued development of ppcoin and its market has not changed. ppcoin's advanced proof-of-stake technology has long-term advantage over pure proof-of-work designs, and is an innovative environmental-friendly solution to the escalating energy consumption on cryptocurrency. In my opinion the energy intensive sector will fragment into many different types of proof-of-work, a single type of proof-of-work is unlikely to maintain dominance. More fragmentation is likely even within a single type of proof-of-work. Meanwhile the energy efficient sector would rise to challege the energy intensive sector, and ppcoin is among the leading contenders in the energy efficient sector. So in terms of our long term strategy ppcoin is of more importance than primecoin.

Release Schedule

Primecoin release is tentatively scheduled for 2013 July 7th 18:00 UTC

Update: 2013-JUL-07: Primecoin blockchain now up and running. Main discussion thread at:

Let's be constructive and respect other community members' effort. I certainly appreciate Sentinelrv and other donators contributing time and resource to get a better logo designed. Everyone has their own strength, so let's be positive and concentrate on what one can do to help the community grow, rather than discouraging other people's work. Yes talking to others about ppcoin innovation helps too, so you are also doing the good work to help, even if they remain skeptical, it still differentiates our network from all the copycat altcoins out there and will help us gain critical mass at some point.
347  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2 ("Netcoin"): A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: June 27, 2013, 05:07:21 AM
Don't know about others but at least I never laughed at your ideas. Though the problem is not the idea is ahead of its time, problem is nobody is willing to step up to take the risk and make it happen.

This is the first tough lesson I learned in entrepreneurial projects. Idea is only the first small step, execution is 99%. If I didn't learn this lesson well, ppcoin wouldn't happen either.

My first advice to netcoin is, limit the scope to the point that you can execute within one year.

My idea was to go with the Tubes. I suggested it for PPcoin and said let's make PPTube but the idea got laughed out as being too ahead of it's time. But I think those are the kinds of ideas which will build market cap so I suggest NetTube and to make it simple to make Tubes which run on Netcoin it would be best to create an open source Tube site template so anyone can pay a service provider to set up the Tube site for them for a fee under any domain name they want and people can simply upload their videos while other people pay per view those videos.

348  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ONC][Market] Is there a ONC market now? on: June 27, 2013, 04:42:28 AM
Only on PPC Marketplace (http://ppcoin.org/market) as far as I know. Looks like I am the only buyer lol. Guys should step up.
349  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Feathercoin to partner with other leading alt currencies on: June 27, 2013, 04:36:03 AM
Actually as the lead developer of PPC I have always been calling for cooperation between altcoin developers, as a larger team in the big picture. I have helped NVC and TRC with their problems before FTC was born.

FTC's community is sort of like those of litecoin's, loud, energetic. Peter has been a good leader. I am actually quite open to possible cooperation with FTC team.

This is the BEST Post-Mined Altcoin because it is the Only One with a Cooperative Attitude where everyone should help each other instead of bashing the other ALT Coins just because we may have more of another coin and want the competition to fail... Why do many people have a ELITE Mindset there is more than enough room for all Cryptocoins to be Traded on the Market Openly... We need to GET AWAY from FIAT Money like USD, CAN, ect and start moving more money to SILVER and GOLD and FTC, LTC, PPC, BTC, Those are the ones that will make it!
350  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: coinchoose.com and PPC on: June 26, 2013, 08:05:41 PM
With recent chain stuck issue in CNC and 51% attack on FTC etc I don't know why folks still held onto the myth that only SHA-256 coins can be attacked by powerful miners and scrypt coins are somehow immune.

The issue with stuck chain has always been the difficulty adjustment algorithm, regardless of which hash function is used for mining. That's why I praise ONC's developer as he is competent enough to realize this and adopted PPC's difficulty adjustment.
351  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: coinchoose.com and PPC on: June 26, 2013, 07:58:47 PM
Recently there has been a high demand for PPC among miners, so the profitability rarely goes above 100%. It's typically around 90% these days.

460K feels a bit off, there should be less than 100K minted from proof-of-stake I think.

I think Andy hasn't been maintaining the proof-of-stake.com site since March. But Andy is around, he just recently volunteered to represent PPC in September's EU bitcoin conference.

355  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [PPC] PPCoin Weekly Updates on: June 24, 2013, 04:40:56 PM
Weekly Update #44

  • A new exchange coins-e.com now supports PPC trading.
  • Captcha requirement is reduced on the ppcoin.org marketplace (http://ppcoin.org/market) to help users trade, also the rating thread and rating format is now up.
  • Several new coins have been added to the marketplace for trading including onecoin and sifcoin, two latest cpu altcoins.
  • I see peer-to-peer trading as an important part of cryptocurrency community in the future. As we can see recently, the political environment for the exchange operators are not very amenable. The goal of PPC Marketplace is to experiment in this area and gain some experience for me, while keeping its scope limited so that I can still focus on development and operations.

Have fun!
356  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [SIC] Sifcoin Trading at PPC Marketplace on: June 24, 2013, 04:25:08 PM
Sifcoin (SIC) is a new coin currently with CPU mining only. It presumably introduced 6 hash functions composed for proof-of-work. I have added it to PPC Marketplace (http://ppcoin.org/market) to help its users to trade.

Good luck SIC!

359  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [PPC] PPC Marketplace Ratings on: June 23, 2013, 03:00:57 AM
PPC Marketplace thread is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=224012.0

In this thread I introduce the 'PPC rating' for the marketplace on ppcoin.org. This is intended to be a web-of-trust rating system.

The way it works is that forum users can post ratings of other users in this thread. Only posts in this thread will count in the marketplace.

The rating format is, you can say 'ppc market rating 1000 Sunny King' to mean that you can trust me with 1000 PPC worth of trading risk. This sentence must be posted on one line without other words, also note the capital letters and spaces in the username. The words 'ppc market' can be omitted.

If you say 'ppc market rating 0 NewComerName' that means you don't know about this identity, this is the implicit trust state between users if ratings are not previously posted.

If you have been scammed by someone you can say 'ppc market rating -100 ScammerName' then other users would understand that you had bad experience with this user and lost around 100 PPC worth of value.

Some valid examples:
Quote
ppc market rating 1000 Sunny King
rating 1000 Sunny King
PPC Market Rating -500 scammer
Rating -100 Spammer

Again, note the capital letters and spaces in username are significant per bitcointalk rules. But you can freely use 'PPC' and capitalize the first letter of words 'market' or 'rating'.

If you want to change your rating of a user, you can either edit your old rating post, or make a new rating post. It is then understood your old rating is updated. If rating of the same user appears on multiple lines of the same post, the line below overwrites the lines above.

The number in the rating should be whole number (no fractional) bounded by -2 billion and 2 billion.

The ratings will be displayed on PPC Marketplace in the future.

Have fun  Wink

Update:
[BONUS GIVEAWAY CLOSED 2013 JUNE 30]
To help me get started testing the rating system, I'm giving away 10PPC bonus each to the first 20 users making a rating post. Qualifications:

  • Must contain at least one rating line
  • Must rate at least one user not rated by anyone else before you
  • PPC address on the first line in the same post

Bonus is paid out every day, so please expect a delay in bonus payment.

Captcha requirement is now lowered. It should be easier to use now.
