101  Economy / Speculation / Re: Silkroad closed down. Owner Arrested. on: October 02, 2013, 11:08:46 PM
Um.... in what world does the USG owe $100 trillion?

It is called unfunded liabilities.  Many of the US future obligations are "off the books".  The "national debt" is just the tip of the iceberg.

Any corporation offering retirement or retirees for healthcare would be required to project the lifetime cost, reduce that to NPV and reflect that as a liability.  Not doing so is criminal, literally criminal charges.   However the US govt gets to play by different accounting rules.  Since a retiree in 2040 doesn't cost the govt anything "yet" it is $0 liability on the US govt books.  The fact that inevitably 2040 will come and that retiree will stop working, paying taxes, and will collect SS and Medicare for the next 20-40 years only matters in the real world.

I would reply to your question Notme, but it was done very appropriately here.

So the crash was caused by good news?  lol  Smiley

or by huge sales amounts. which i believe can be confiscated wallets as written in the report. why not sell and pay off part of us govt debt?

If they held onto them for a few years, they could pay off the entire national debt with them!

You clearly don't have good comprehension of the liabilities the US government is facing...

Or I'm incredibly bullish!

Pretty bullish to aim for 100 trillion dollars.
103  Economy / Speculation / Re: People panic selling will be losing money. on: October 02, 2013, 08:13:04 PM
im buying all ya cheap coins.
Never used silkroad, and is apparently never going to. This day is a sucess for bitcoin, it is the first real move for bitcoin to be introduced into the real world and people being held accountable for their actions. its good for the public that bitcoin is more the just drug and scams.

Its good that silkroad got closed.

Can you define accountability in this scenario? Pretty sure Bitcoin is exactly what it was a week ago, regardless of SR..

How many individuals will they be targeting to take wealth and liberty subsequently as a result of site theft is my next question.

"to send their responses to rosselbricht @ gamil.com", how could he be so sloppy ?

Read the full indictment, he registered his "altoid" account in here with that email, and they already had that.

But everybody wait and think: he just wrote ONE post about SR, and the October 11th post in which he said he was looking for an IT pro was very generic. And they caught him BECAUSE OF THAT, meaning that they have been thoroughly monitoring everybody that wrote ANYTHING about SR. And this applies to everything.

Creepy...

Well, to be honest, this did not require monitoring everyone.   It only required determining which account was the first to mention SR.  Once you got the account, you can check all the correspondence in the account.   From there you could determine the actual person behind it.   I mean, even if he didn't use a google account, he could have used a server name and could still get traced back by that.

Investigations on the virtual world may in fact be much easier than the physical world!

Point is that 1984 is far beyond here I think. Children posting all over FB have no idea how their future lives will be controlled, constrained, and prosecuted for pastcrimes.

Has anybody posted "THIS IS A GOOD THING" yet?

I've read that already somewhere around, one claimed that he didn't wanted btc associated with SR, to be honest I feel the same way.

How do you feel about cash being associated with buying weed? Or cocaine? Maybe you should tell those folks you don't like your dollars being associated... bottom line is currency will be used to purchase items.

I am sorry but this post is way off the mark and poor attempt at explaining your position.  It is out of context.

One does not think anyone who has cash is automatically a criminal, but those who are uneducated think if you have a bitcoin you are a criminal.  Why is this?  If you search bitcoin you will found tons of media coverage on the criminal use of bitcoin, and find very little info on legitimate ways to benefit from the currency, unless you dig deeper.

So on the surface this is the general perception of bitcoin, but this is not the perception of cash in most cases.  So although they have many similarities as far as a currency goes, the public perception of these 2 currencies are not the same.

So yes I would like that perception to change and if it doesn't the bitcoin your holding will never be worth much more than it is now.

Quite simply, I think the answer to your question lies within the query itself. They are uneducated and not much is going to change that.

There is nothing inherently wrong with what SR was doing - what's wrong is the overstepping of jurisdiction by the US, crushing personal freedoms and enforcing lifestyle mandates as well as long term incarceration for voluntary behaviors. If no one was buying anything, what's the point of a medium of transfer? Let people buy what they want, so long as they aren't bothering you. SR wasn't just a boon to BTC, it was a boon to the world, circumventing tyrannical oppression of lifestyle mandate...

Hell, our tax -dollars- buy bombs and murders all day, far more than have ever even been considered to purchase with coin, I don't see enough people complaining to those ordering the hits..

What's good about theft and the results unfavorable regulatory environments?
111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SilkRoad domain Seized? on: October 02, 2013, 04:43:42 PM
Wouldn't it be more likely that the owner made a human mistake and got caught somehow?

Read the indictment. They are monitoring these forums (and much more), they looked how a guy called "altoid" mentioned SR very early on, he had registered that account with his real email (BTW, Theymos: how did they get the email through which he registered his btctalk account?). So they thoroughly monitored "Ross Ulbricht", and they realized he had the same interests of DPR - they wrote about the same books, liked the same videos... So they started to follow his moves... And they caught him.

They are watching.

Of critical interest?

DPR was in the united states the whole time? well that's his mistake from the get go

This was my first thought.

Will take bank deposit (WF - Maybe ING - Does Capital One do it?), but prefer cash. Meetups ok if large amounts.. Big enough and we can arrange a meeting in person, my cost (I'm in cent FL).

Please review my feedback. Escrow with JOhn K (only) available in certain warranted situations.

Post or PM here.

It's pretty much confirmed that btct.co source codes will be sold (auctioned off) to someone in the bitcoin community and the exchange will be re-opened under a new name and clean slate of issuers and users.

Although, in light of all the legal troubles with US regulators, US-based companies may be prohibited from it.

In other news, cex.io - bitfury commodity exchange where you can buy Gh/s with instant delivery (at ghash.io pool).

I'm really not certain another exchange is the solution to this issue, but whatever way it goes I suppose.

118  Economy / Economics / Re: Wealth confiscation goes global on: September 27, 2013, 07:03:14 PM
I try not to be too paranoid, but I learned something in 2008. As the collapse played out I went to the bank to withdraw my savings and most of my checking. I explained to the teller (and then the manager) that I was worried about a freeze in liquidity and preferred the cash. I was assured repeatedly and vehemently that there was nothing to worry about. Now I know that the entire US financial system was within hours of shutting down. The ATMs would stop dispensing and the banks would close. I did not believe them then and I don't now.  You have to be the grown up when dealing with banks. They do not know something you do not. Trust yourself.

But owning cash is risky in itself. Firstly it can be stolen or lost. Secondly, it could devalue very quickly in such a scenario.

Good thing you have an alternative now. If the above would happen the price of Bitcoin would be the out of the stadium Wink

I'd prefer access to devalued capital as opposed to none.
119  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Where Can I Buy Ripple? on: September 27, 2013, 02:02:42 PM
You can get FREE RIPPLES from my faucet. -> RippleGiveaway.com

Faucet is kind of a waste of time for ripple since you have to have a funded account for it to work.

No wonder.. well, so much for my first Ripple!

B.) that function is there for a reason dude
C.) we need to sort the scammers from the trust worthy sellers.

make sure you add to his trust

Reporting the deal went just fine. Positive experience.

I don't really mind doing that, but why are you so concerned?

Are you rushing for him to ++ me too? Eh. The thread creates a record.
