interesting.  you're lucky to have backed everything up, and learned how wallets, etc., worked.

It was early 2010 I think. We were talking one day and he was trying to explain Bitcoin to me. It didn't really make sense to me but he was pretty sure it would be successful and wanted to buy some computers so we could get some for ourselves. We were pretty poor at the time so I said no. It was about a month later we went to an auction for a computer shop going out of business. Without even asking me he started bidding on a case of graphic cards.

maybe a little later?  was there any GPU mining software in early 2010?

You noticed that too? I can't find any reference to GPU mining early 2010.

thanks for that. Smiley
206  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling 100 coins $13 each on: July 23, 2011, 04:50:16 AM
Problem is my withdraw limit on MTgox is at its months limit and until they get back to me about raising my withdraw limit I pretty much can't sell there since I need the funds ASAP.

Doesn't Dwolla take some time to withdraw from? I have never used it, I am curious.
207  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: List of Legal and Illegal Nations. on: July 23, 2011, 02:56:42 AM
It is illegal in the US to use foreign currency because it is illegal to use any money that is not denominated in US Dollars.

I am very interested in reviewing your evidence of this claim. Post here please.
208  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How to tell how much Power a PSU is using? on: July 21, 2011, 11:20:59 PM
An 80% efficient 850W PSU delivering 850W DC to your system (full load) will draw 1020W AC from the wall and likewise a 90% efficient 850W PSU (same conditions) would draw 935W from the wall.
209  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I can reduce my electricity by 30% with commercial connection on: July 21, 2011, 10:14:06 PM
I didn't catch that he was in the USA. Do business/company taxes apply globally and/or does the IRS have global jurisdiction?
210  Economy / Goods / Re: [confirmed] SCAMMER: user Leon on: July 21, 2011, 10:09:37 PM
An escrow service requires an arbitration process.  Any escrow service without an arbitration process is nothing more than "Hey Bob, will you hold my wad of cash for a few days?"  And you don't know Bob.  And Bob might give your money to the Red Cross if the seller tells him to.

+1

OT and likely to be controversial. I believe ADR/Arbitration should operate with no emotion whatsover, no conflict of interest (or recuse), incentive to rule based on contract and evidence alone and a disincentive to rule on fairness. I don't know that all of those areas can be covered, but close to it I think is possible.
211  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New bread of 5850's in the wild :) (HARDWARE) on: July 20, 2011, 06:16:00 AM
The second revision of cards they usually cheap out on some components.  Like the 5870 Vapor-X they took out the software controllable voltage chip (forgot the name.. volterra?) in revision 2, in addition to slightly modifying the PCB (different soldermask) and component layout.

The small black components with 3 feet could be voltage regulators (for smaller chips, not the GPU), but considering they have a "Q" next to them on the silkscreen, they are probably transistors.

Volterra sounds right.

Would a "U" on silkscreen indicate an IC/VRM ?
212  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: glbse.com sure seems "user mean" so far on: July 20, 2011, 05:54:13 AM
I had difficulty first using GLBSE also, still do but I don't have to visit it often.

The SSL certificate message when visiting the site just means that the cert is not signed by a CA (Certificate Authority) recognized by your web browser. I think the reason Nefario has not got a signed cert yet is that GLBSE was not originally built to have a web ui client IIRC. I remember when launched you had to use a console client to interact with GLBSE.

The reason I trust the certificate even though my browser doesn't, is because I know of Nefario and have followed his activities for some months, he has been here quite a while, I have interacted with him and never a red flag or concern over his ethics.

I hope that he finishes up the code and some documentation soon for the web ui. I see GLBSE as useful and beneficial to the community, just needs that easier to understand and simpler web ui stuff done and it will get used.

If you post where you are stuck or something about it you don't understand I will do my best to answer.

213  Economy / Goods / Re: (possible) SCAM ALERT: user Leon on: July 20, 2011, 03:08:48 AM
Sorry folks, I was only at 90% sure this was a scam when he first posted his for sale thread. I made an accusation via PM to a couple folks once this haploid23 thread started though. Good call haploid23, but sorry to hear this happened yet again. I would not be surprised if this is the same individual I have been tracking for a couple months now.

I think some slogans can be:

I have 6 shares, but i'll buy more soon.

I like this one. Smiley
215  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New bread of 5850's in the wild :) (HARDWARE) on: July 20, 2011, 12:10:53 AM
Those components you have a red box around are not VRMs, they are capacitors, and the black ones might be resistors.  They could be connected to VRMs, however you will have to take off the heatsink of the card to confirm that.

Hey mate. Im certain they are, there all getting good temps when tested with IR thermometer. 79 to 92-83 along the line of the 230SA varient. IM CERTAIN of it Smiley But its my mates cardx in all honesty that one.But im poicking 2 up later so will have a closer inspection then Smiley Stable for 48 hours counting at 1015/300 STOCK Smiley gotta be close to a record stock Smiley

As Ryu mentioned, the components circled in red are SMD capacitors.
216  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: your power draw @ the wall with 4x? on: July 19, 2011, 11:07:51 PM

Honestly I don't know what the efficiency rating on the PSU means but if by 80% they mean that only 80% of the power it receives is passed on then the draw at wall would have to be 1250W.

Yep, this is what is means.

I'm fairly sure this also has something to do with removing the GUI.  If you are using Linux then feel free to PM me for details.

What do you mean by this?
218  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Hosting] Would you be interested? on: July 19, 2011, 04:12:36 AM

219  Economy / Services / [WTB] Windows Server 2008 VPS Instance on: July 19, 2011, 03:46:29 AM
IBB (Islamic Bank of Bitcoin) is looking for offers to provide a Windows 2008 (Web) VPS with access to a MSSQL 2008 DB. The VPS should have at least 1GB/20GB/200GB. Cpanel/Plesk/Other should be included and RDP access of course. IIS 7.5, ASP.NET and Ajax pre-setup and configured would be needed.

PM me with offers (to be settled in BTC) and include VPS specs and connectivity/peering information.
220  Economy / Speculation / Re: Aaaaaand bitcoin takes off! on: July 18, 2011, 11:31:14 PM
Gah! Noooooo!!! I was waiting til it hit $11.XX.  I even put some money into my MtGox acct grr... Angry

We highlighted the 11.8-12.5 zone as buy area in the technical analysis subscription. 5 Btc per month and still a few slots available .

If I did speculate/trade on the market (I don't) there would be only a few forum members who I would pay close attention to (and subscribe), S3052 being one of those few.
