21  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: TradeHill - shutting down trading / deposits and returning all client funds on: February 18, 2012, 12:55:59 AM
as I said before, communication from TH will ultimately determine whether rev2 will succeed or fail.
22  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: TradeHill - shutting down trading / deposits and returning all client funds on: February 14, 2012, 12:14:37 AM
I wish you good fortune Jered/TH. But I must say not responding to queries (or timely response) about funds held at TH over the past couple weeks is the single most important reason I won't do business with Gox/TH and I know of several others that feel the same way. When I ran a business that suffered outages and periodic failures the first priority was solving the failures but equal and sometimes higher priority for some customers was honestly conveying the situation...not making promises I *might* not keep, but advising customers and allowing them to choose to wait it out or not. I saved better than 99% of customers this way, failures were rare but when they occurred and the customer was communicated with, I saved a customer almost for life. I couldn't get rid of some if I tried, they won't leave.

When I had to admit I failed a customer or let them down I didn't want to admit it (regardless of whether my fault or a providers fault), least of all to them. But I found it made all the difference in the world to them and when running a datacenter for them...I suppose running financial based businesses may be considerably different.

I just would like to encourage all the exchanges and Bitcoin businesses, talk to your customers, even when it is painful and you don't have the time. You may be surprised by what you find.

BTW, I had no funds in TH or Gox during either of their issues...I suppose it is easier for me to critique as such...

Edit: I don't intend to be bashing TH, rather just suggesting a method of success that worked for me,  no matter if it was a $2k/mo T1 customer or a $20/mo 56k dialup (yes, it was 1990's)
23  Economy / Lending / Re: [LOAN NEEDED] 180 BTC on: January 28, 2012, 02:08:13 AM
I have received an offer to service the loan and to answer the questions regarding interest, it may be terminology or beliefs or principle. I have always felt uncomfortable charging or paying interest on a loan and thus I have no conventional credit cards, loans, mortgages, etc. I realize this is not the norm.

If someone offers to lend me some BTC or USD or their lawnmower for the weekend, I feel obligated to return it to them in the same or better condition and offer a "thank you" for the use of it. If someone insists on calling it interest or rental fee so be it, I would prefer not to do business with those folks. If they accept the "thank you" or gratuity as just that then that satisfies me.

I admire many of the principles and beliefs of various religions and cultures which seem to have existed for thousands of years doing business in this manner.

Thank you all for the responses and concern regarding the terminology. I hope this helps to clarify my position.
24  Economy / Lending / [LOAN NEEDED] [CLOSED] 180 BTC on: January 27, 2012, 03:54:00 AM
I am interested in a 2 week loan of 180 BTC preferably from one individual. I don't believe in charging or paying interest for loans however I would provide a gratuity or a "thank you" of at least 5% of the loan amount for the 14 day period to whoever funds the loan.

The loan will fund a purchase I need to make within the next 2 days and cover me while I move cash (USD) to an exchange to buy BTC.

If interested in servicing this loan PM me. If you have questions feel free to post here in this thread. I have performed many successful trades on the forums here. I am listed several times (buried deep) in the Honest Traders thread.

Thanks!
25  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there a way to anonymously access the internet with prepaid wireless devices? on: January 23, 2012, 09:23:51 PM
...and don't use the same wireless device ever again. The same as the idea of cheap, discardible pre-paid phones some shady individuals tend to use, actually.

And don't forget to wear a ski mask and gloves when you go into the store to buy the wireless dongle. Also feign a limp and wear a different brand shoe on each foot. Am I missing anything else? Smiley

Nice job Mike!
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 06:15:36 AM
If Mike finds nothing I'd be happy to take a glance and confirm what he found, or didn't find. Although I would suspect my findings would be identical.
32  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Secret wallet on: January 01, 2012, 03:21:20 AM
Three letter agencies need to feel they are smarter than average joe. Give them what they are looking for...an environment similar to 99% of facebook/twitter users with a low value wallet. Once you start burying things with encryption they will continue digging indefinitely. Keep the high value stuff physical and in your head. Smiley
33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 03:07:33 AM
If you figure it out on your own imagine how proud you would be to do so without asking for help. I encourage you to try before tossing in the towel. At the least you will have learned some things that may be useful in the future. If you fail to recover it yourself there are folks here willing to help for a fee.

"feed a man fish and he will eat for a night, teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime"...or something to that effect Smiley

Give it a shot, your incentive is likely greater than someone else doing it for you.

Hint: Search for the specific hex (CTRL-F maybe) Mike indicated and follow his other tips and see what you find Smiley
34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: help, recovering from wallet.dat on: January 01, 2012, 02:02:50 AM
Geez, what's up with everyone losing their wallets lately. Smiley I am counting at least 4 in last couple days.
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 01:58:35 AM
If you want coins back I would encourage you to ask Mike nicely to do it for you in exchange for a generous reward. He has recovered others' although I am sure you know there is no guarantees.

Alternately git those sources and start hacking Smiley
36  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcointalk requesting donations? Wtf? on: December 31, 2011, 09:06:01 PM
It is for development of new custom forum software. I can't recall the thread title but theymos detailed the specs for the job in a very long post.
37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: December 30, 2011, 12:35:29 AM
Your wallet's fine.  Instead of moving the entire folder, let an empty wallet sit there and download the blockchain first, THEN move copy only the wallet in.  For some reason, Bitcoin didn't release the lock on the appdata folder.
edit: Also, when dealing with a large amount of coins like that, don't trust the backup.  The easy solution is to use a Ubuntu liveCD, mount the XP drive and move the files out to a USB.

FTFY

I've been around for a little while and although I haven't had direct trades/interactions with shakaru my impression based on his activity and involvement in the community is that he is not a scammer by any means. I have been away for some months so I may have missed something, but regardless I wish him well and if I had the resources to assist him I would do so without hesitation.

I had considered driving down to him to assist for free when he was requesting on-site setup help a couple of months back, I am only a few hours away. I am still able to help in this manner but it appears this type of assistance is not necessary or required.

@shakaru: aside from donations (which I can't help with at this time), what else could the community do to assist?
