It's a hard discussion to have. I know Apple isn't trusted in my book as they seem to be giving up data more leniently than Google.

Google recently had a dispute with the US Govt. about what type of data they publish and share with the people/govt.

I don't know the details, but they seemed to be annoyed that the Govt would push them for such data,
however, they lost the case in court, and was ordered to proceed with the demands of the GOVT.

I'd trust Google > Apple. However, its tough to say if they were held up with 'no-choices' but to reveal user data.

"Google is fighting back against National Security Letters, the secretive, controversial requests for data from the US government that bypass the court process and come with a gag order. The company has filed papers in a case called In Re Google Inc. Petition to set aside Legal Process; while the documents are sealed, Bloomberg reported on the nature of the filing. No details are currently available on the request itself, but the move is significant — Google would be the most prominent company yet to challenge an NSL."

>implying i trust google or apple

Is there another choice? I want a "smart phone", but just can't get around to trusting either Google or Apple. It sounds like they track everything you do. Was considering a Windows Phone, but it seems to have a lack of support. And I'm not sure I trust Microsoft all that well. Probably more so than Google/Apple though.

That's just crap. I hope people did not fall for the install.
You should NEVER EVER Install anything related to bitcoin's at least for DESKTOP.
Especially if you use it to store encrypted wallets. I mean, you are NEVER safe even with a pass phrase from the bitcoin-qt.exe
1145  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we reduce our reliance on MtGOX? on: July 04, 2013, 11:47:53 PM
I thought we already did? gox was 90% of exchange volume just 6 months ago, today it's less than 50%

How did we do that? who is our main sources now?

1148  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] A simple iOS app to help you track your bitcoin addresses on: July 04, 2013, 10:40:43 PM
Good job on getting this started. I am glad Apple did not reject this app.

It does seem to be useful. Isn't it a challenge to track your bitcoin address for each one you own?

If anyone was wondering what ever happened to this app, well, it's back.  You have to pay Apple $100 / year to keep apps in the app store.  Seeing as I hadn't made enough money from the app to cover the fee, I let it go.  Anyhow, I paid again to get access to iOS 7, so , it's back up.  Warning though, if you set the local settings to be anything but the US, it doesn't handle the localization correctly.  I'm not sure when I'll get around to fixing it!

Off course they want to make money. Who doesn't want to make money with Bitcoins?
Off course, adoption and business is what drives bitcoins, and speculation, but.. we need drivers/leaders, or the value of Bitcoins will diminish.

Not saying they are the best people for it.. However, if they came up with the FB idea.. they must have some sort of value to add in the industry.

What do you guys think of them? What's their angle? It's my opinion that they're not the simple Bitcoin evangelist/enthusiasts that they portray themselves to be. What I do know is that they're interested in a regulated Bitcoin, and especially after their recent SEC filing, I've been running through a number of theories as to what their ultimate goal might be in all of this. I'm interested to see what you guys think.

If you read the articles they state they will charge an undisclosed fee for their new instrument.

I think they want to make money.

1151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we reduce our reliance on MtGOX? on: July 04, 2013, 10:06:18 PM
The only thing I can think of is a provider in an alternative MTGOX placement.

REPLACING MTGOX with something more demanding and unique and official.

It's hard to make a source official. MTGOX grabbed that right off the bat.

I've been seeing a lot of talk about how relying on a single exchange makes the bitcoin system vulnerable.

I know there are other exchanges, but I can't see what they offer to distinguish themselves from Gox.  This seems like an industry where economies of scale are in place.  Gox has a natural monopoly of sorts.

There are also things like localbitcoins, and the possibility of spending the bitcoin.  The problem here is these systems still rely on MtGOX for price discovery.

What alternatives could there be that would provide both exchangibility and price discovery?

FYI: The poll is a Q&A format. It's still a poll, as I plan to release stats of answers once we reach the first 100 responses.

Overall... pretty good answers so far! It's good to see these stats coming from Bitcoiners.

BTW,

What are the best apps for android ?

I can't say its the best, since I am directly involved with the project.

However, I believe a huge problem was solved which was organization of resources, save time as the app does all the research for you, and having
important information at your fingertips. This means you get Notifications of new posts from Reddit.com/r/bitcoin & access to Bitcoin News Instantly.

In addition, we recently enabled a MOBILE version of BITCOINTALK.org forums

The app is published here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=220659
as a Bitcoin App for Android Users called 'Bitcoin Buzz Feeds' available for FREE on Google Play!

Yes, IOS is expected to launch shortly for this same app, under the name 'Bit Omni'

Let's keep going Bitcoiners! Answer the three questions.
1) Are you an ANDROID OR IOS (iPHONE) user?

2) Which phone is it? (name?)

3) Which Apps do regularly you use for Bitcoins?
