1401  Economy / Speculation / Re: Don't miss the train! on: January 21, 2013, 03:35:12 PM
Absolutely.

I am still reading about the gold-bugs, Austrian economists, and hard money enthusiasts debating about which is better for 2013: gold or silver?

Meanwhile, bitcoin is road-rollering both those relics into the dust...

There's no reason they can't coexist. Smiley

http://mises.org/money/2s11.asp

I was reading someone last night who was asserting that "copper is the new silver."

1403  Other / Off-topic / Re: Release of GLBSE's Documents on: January 21, 2013, 03:10:02 PM
I think you need to make up your mind what you want.

Motivation 1:
The point is to let the users of this forum decide if they are really interested to look into the documents.

Motivation 2:
You could post them and then people who are interested could look and those who aren't could ignore them, right?

Completely right!

However I am very interested to know what the forum users thoughts before I release the documents.

Motivation 3:
Because I am trying to establish why the documents were sent to me.

Are you here to find out why the documents were sent, or to find out what people think to satisfy your curiosity, or to let people decide if they want to see them or not?  Or for some other purpose (such as to create and enjoy drama and receive attention)?  Once your mind is made up, I think you should pursue that goal and not let the others get in the way.

Actually, I think you should think primarily about the victims here.  If there's wrongdoing and these documents shed light on it, I think you should put your personal motivations aside and provide what you have to them so that people can know the truth about what was done with their money.  If you consider them first and put your personal curiosity second, I think you'll be able to receive all of the above.
1404  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Meteoric rise of BTC sucking life from Alt-Coins on: January 21, 2013, 03:08:10 PM
I think there is a good argument to be made that by trading alt-coins against BTC we fall victim to psychologically being influenced on the value of Alt-coins are relative to BTC.

Right now for example, LTC looks *horrible* compared to BTC on the charts, it's value continues to drop, but it's hard to constantly keep in mind that the value is against something that is constantly going up. If you look at LTC/USD LTC is down a bit, but not nearly as much as BTC/LTC.

Maybe trading against BTC is a bad idea in that it locks the value of alt coins too much to BTC. Of course it would be hard to "decouple" these things on exchanges where much of their profit is made trading between the two, but for example at exchange.zapto.org the collapse of LTC against BTC has meant many sell order of TRC have disappears (I had my eye on lots of 5000TRC sales) but as confidence drops in LTC no one wants to sell other alt coins against it.

Rabbit, I haven't looked at the numbers, but from what I see here on the forum, I imagine that TRC would be going up and LTC going down.  Is it possible this is what you're seeing?

I suggest you go to your bank and borrow cash, then use the cash to buy bitcoins.  The bank will probably give you a much better rate of interest than 20%.  And they are just like a bank!

What do you plan on doing with the bitcoins?
1407  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should the exchanges close on the weekends? on: January 20, 2013, 10:46:06 PM
If it's a good idea for exchanges to be closed on the weekends, somebody should start an exchange and run it like that.  If it's a good idea, that exchange will prosper relative to the other exchanges.

There might even be room in the market for both.
1408  Economy / Economics / Re: What is bitcoin backed by? My favorite answers on: January 20, 2013, 02:46:24 PM
No, we can set up a LETS where we keep a ledger, and the unit of accounting is work hours.

Work hours would make a terrible currency since they are not at all consistent.
1409  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should i allocate 100% of my savings to bitcoin ? on: January 20, 2013, 02:56:27 AM
Yes, it's okay with me if you do that.  I don't really have time to watch over you and see if you're making a good decision or not, but I don't mind if you do it. Tongue
1410  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The hoarding problem on: January 20, 2013, 02:49:26 AM
It may become noticable if there is a major shift in the habit of savings, for example if people around the world at the same time believe that something bad is going to happen.

This illustrates the fact that saved/hoarded money produces security, an economic good.
1411  Economy / Economics / Re: What is bitcoin backed by? My favorite answers on: January 20, 2013, 02:46:07 AM
Bitcoin is literally backed by silver and gold.  I can show you several places where you can exchange it for either.
1412  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The hoarding problem on: January 20, 2013, 02:45:20 AM
I don't want to get into an argument over semantics or whether or not "hoarding" has negative connotations, but let me just say that when you ask anyone what they do with the money they "save", they will say they invest it or put it in bank account (also "investing"), and they won't say they store it in a safe ("hoarding").

Actually, no, sometimes I've saved for a purchase by taking a little cash out of the bank each week and putting it somewhere until I had enough for the purchase.  Once I even kept it under my mattress.  Not all saving is investing, and not all saving occurs in a bank.  This kind of saving still represents deferred consumption, and is still beneficial.

1415  Economy / Economics / Re: Inflation that's equally distributed. on: January 18, 2013, 05:02:35 PM
This means his idea of "equal distribution" is the same amount for each individual. Not according to how much money you already hold. So, inflation comes, everyone gets $100.
The reason we don't want that is that we really don't want people to consume, we want them to save. Every time someone consumes we get poorer, because we have less things to consume. Every time someone saves up (refrains from consuming) we're richer, as a whole, because he has produced something of value, but not consumed anything in return.

This is a great explanation of why it helps me when other people "hoard" (save) their money.

1417  Economy / Lending / Re: will someone at least trust me with a .5 bitcoin loan to get started on: January 18, 2013, 04:06:25 PM
I've been asking for some time now for a loan I will pay back it full.

During that time you could have bought bitcoins through bitinstant or confirmed a bank account with coinbase and made a purchase there.  Either one of those would have been a great place to get started.  I suggest you do that.  One bitcoin will only cost you about $16.

What do you intend to do with bitcoin to get started?
1418  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The hoarding problem on: January 16, 2013, 03:01:21 PM
Why is this referred to as a "hoarding" problem? Why is saving not the correct term for this? To me, it's derogatory to call saving hording. At some point, the coins will be spent or sold. Hoarding is what those people on TV do, keep it until it is trash. Unless it's your plan to keep your BTC until you format them away, it's not hoarding.
Correct.

Because bitcoin is a deflationary currency it will be attacked by all who believe such currencies are doomed.

Attackers (debaters if you prefer) should use logic to discuss the relative merits of fiat currency versus bitcoin. However, they are likely to also try emotional attacks, and calling bitcoin users "hoarders" is an emotional attack. It isn't logical, but that wasn't the point of the attack.

Exactly!

And the truth is, if people don't like bitcoin's limited supply, they can simply choose to not use it.  The fact that they argue it usually points to the fact that they want input into the decision of others, not just themselves.

Yep.  The real problem is that some people would like to own more of the money of others, so they denigrate the decision of others to save by calling it "hoarding."  There is no mathematical delineation between hoarding and saving.  It's just a matter of choosing a disrespectful term to try to force the outcome you want, and using that disrespectful term to try to apply public pressure.  There's no real such thing as "hoarding."
1420  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are all the other coins? on: January 15, 2013, 10:04:03 PM
Those are typically coins that either try to fix something about Bitcoin that isn't broken or add something which no one wants. I've yet to see an alt coin that adds value on top of Bitcoin.

I'm all for their creation and existence though. Competition is useful.

Probably a good way to find bugs, as well.

And by developing them, people are gaining competence that is also useful within bitcoin.  Just creating a trivial new blockchain is a very interesting exercise.
