The staking weight drops with time, and as coins drop from this weight they move from "spendable" to "stake" in the wallet. When this happened I locked the wallet then unlocked it again, and after a few minutes they moved from "stake" to "spendable" and I had to wait 8 hours for them to mature again. I am not a expert at this but almost all POS coins works this way.

You can set a certain amount of coins to be set aside and ineligible to use for POS rewards. This is done through a simple rpc command or a more permanent method is adding the same line to your .conf file

reservebalance=x ( x= the number of coins to reserve)

This will make sure x number of coins will not be staked for POS rewards. Coin age can still be earned on your reserve balance. Simply remove the command to resume POS minting with those coins

Yes, after all coins have gone through the staking process (of the ones you want to stake) then technically you can close your wallet for another 8 hours. Re-open to start the process over. Pro-tip though, wallet.dats can get corrupted (it's rare but why take the chance) if you close the wallet prior to coins coming back to avail balance while staking. So it's best to let them do this naturally. Save a copy of your wallet.dat offline just in case.

Nice staking info thanks.  I left all my coins in staking unlocked (but encrypted of course) for about 2hrs, it mind 1.00 VIRAL lol, then nothing for awhile so I re-locked and let them fall back into 'spendable' naturally like you said.  Then I closed the wallet.  Will try staking again tonight.
