The issue with Harry Kane is that he needs to score more goals in the important games. Now at the European Championship there wasn't much coming from Kane. Penalties and one goal, the header against Slovakia which was decent positioning but rather expected from him to score that easy goal.

We are meant to believe that friendlies are played in order to test the strength of a team and most importantly to test new players that are just joining the team from other clubs. You can’t ascertain the strength of a team by their final result in a friendly match but some feel it is what they’re capable of playing they’re already showcasing even before the league starts but in most cases, it is now always like that. Teams tend to increase and improve their performance when the real season begins after testing most of their players and getting a new tactics to employ for the next season.

You’re not quite wrong with your assertion about the whole issue but I think the playing pattern or the structure of the club Bayern Munich was the reason they went for Vincent Kompany. The Bayern style of player over the years has changed to those of Spanish football where they like to possess a lot of the ball. And this now requires them to  have a coach that plays that’s same. Then aside the football pattern the idea of looking for a long term solution rather than a quick fix is another reason. Every team is getting the players it needs to improve its performance and battle for the championship. Vincent Kompany has a lot of work to do to improve Bayern Munich's performance and win the Bundesliga title, the club is adding more players to make it less difficult for Kompany to challenge Xabi Alonso, who broke their record. One of the significant reasons for their decision was Guardiola's recommendation, in fact, Guardiola has always had a very good opinion of Kompany, so I see no reason why he could say anything bad about him.
