New batch is apparently in 10days and will be deprecated to 3.5TH-probably in lieu of the competition that will have a ~3.3Th machine for a bulk price of what was posted here already (very low indeed if it is true).  
I sincerely hope they would seriously reduce the S7 "lite" price even if this would kill the aftermarket price of S7 "large".
Or, maybe they already have a 14/16nm solution?

What is the benefit of making a S7+

I have the same question.  How much could they really be saving on two controller boards.  I think I would rather have the extra controller boards just in case one of them breaks you're not down 4.8th for a month trying to get a replacement.

I think its something like the batch 2 being the rejects from Batch 1 except even more unstable at higher freqs than the batch 2's... therefore they have to really drop the clockrate to get the 3.5TH/s and stability

Those units that do not make the advertising claims of 4.8TH/s are money thrown out the window if they don't make them work somehow. So it would make sense to throw them through a rework process, if they still don't preform, then lower the clock rate and look for the stability sweet spot and sell them as a de-rated S7.

The S7 B2's were de-rated to 575Mhz clock, maybe the S7 B5's are the real flunkers and are clocked for stability at 500Mhz clockrate.

Before tossing the ones that don't meet spec into the hopper and take the loss, I would re-work them and look for a workaround to recover some cash from the QC fail units.

I installed them on my farm, one was in a weird state afterwards, but recovered after a soft restart of the controller.

I have noticed a more stable variance after updating to the 600M firmware on their site. I had two s7's that were all over the place, so that makes me happy.

It was at a Goodwill ~outlet~ / warehouse, not at one of their retail stores.

The outlet is the last chance to get things before its recycled for materials.

Once in a while you can find some real interesting stuff there. For instance , one visit I picked up a laboratory autoclave and a Baush & Lomb microscope for that same $.89 /lb ...

Maybe they are using two boards only because too many  failed and they have more chassis than boards to fill them.

Finksy, I've got 2 2880 PSUs powering 3 S7s. Originally I thought I would put one complete S7 on each PSU, then split the third one across the PSUs.

In the end I put one S7 one one PSU and 2 S7s on the other. I figured that two S7s on a single 2880 PSU only take up 80%, so that seemed reasonable. Also this configuration is simpler to keep track of in case I ever need to power cycle the PSUs from the PDUs (this is all deployed at a data center).

Of course one PSU is underburdened, but them's the breaks. I don't have enough physical space to add another S7.

Another potential drawback is that the 2 new S7s that are on a single PSU are both very strong performers. They are candidates for overclocking, but then they're eating into that 20% headroom.

Does the above configuration make sense to you, or are there tangible benefits to splitting the third S7 across the two PSUs?

I would split the 3rd S7 across the two PSU's, as you'll be moving the lower PSU into the efficiency sweet spot of 60-80% load, unless having to power cycle them remotely is something you are concerned with having to do (since you're dealing w/ hosting at a DC)

Only if the 14/16nm performance and pricing beats BMT's 28nm offering.  If BMT was really wanting to chase 14/16nm tech they would have, but instead they took the wise road and get something to market with impressive efficiency before anyone else.

The variance is much smaller from what I can see, although the sample size is an hour. Not sure what they changed since it's not documented, but the swings are not as large. I have nine s7's that I am using a reference, so I am hopeful they fixed some of the swings I was seeing that I was worried about earlier.
