The former will most likely be merged back to Monero if it succeeds the test of time.

Nothing wrong with bittrex but OTC trades do happen from time to time as well. I helped arrange a 100K+ trade a few months ago.

But in order for that to have credibility the two systems need to be separate, with their own sense of fateful identity.

The two projects are entirely separate. Both have their own leadership, brands, entirely separate finances, unique appraches to decision making, etc.

There are some obvious connections though:

1. Many community members support both.

2. Some developers support both. This includes myself and Arux (not a programmer, but part of the development team of AEON, responsible for release engineering and QA). I'm part of the Monero core team, Arux is not (but he is an active community member and supporter of Monero).

3. The AEON code was originally forked from Monero (which of course was forked from Bytecoin) so there are many similarities in the code base and improvements made to one can by cross-ported to the other. This has happened in both directions already and will likely happen in the future.

These common elements should not detract from the important differences.

Market timing is difficult. It it nice to sell high and rebuy low but as you mention at some point you may miss the opportunity to rebuy lower.

We were just awarded /r/aeon (a top level subreddit) to use as a community home on Reddit.  This is clearly preferable to /r/aeoncoin.

Market timing is difficult. It it nice to sell high and rebuy low but as you mention at some point you may miss the opportunity to rebuy lower.

 
  
The thing about these 'little ponds' of crypto is they behave fairly rationally until a large new buyer enters the market.  Then his/her buying action, plus the enthusiasm it generates causes the price to explode... and it might not come back.  I would hate to be playing a price scalping game on an asset I actually believed in when one of these new whales enters the game.  
  
I've been doing this long enough to realize the potential profits from buying and holding some good far outweigh any temporary wages from scraping bid/ask stacks of their liquidity.

I am surprised by how fast people came over, but I also have seen a lot of shilling in the Poloniex troll box with regards to Aeon.  It seems we have a few people there who like to talk about it, possibly leading to new people discovering the currency.  Polo used to crack down on this pretty hard and tell people not to talk about non-Poloniex coins in the trollbox, but they have changed their minds lately and seem to be allowing these mentions.  Maybe it means they will be adding Aeon back soon?

You are clearly excited about Aeon. DO you have any marketing ideas to share? What is the plan to attract convince businesses to accept Aeon? Are there any use cases where you think a business would accept Aeon payments and not Monero payments?

After discussions, Freenode has kindly granted ownership of IRC channel #aeon to the Aeon project.

In a situation that mirrored the recent Reddit transfer, the #aeon channel was technically already registered to another party, but in effect had been dormant for over 10 years.

Big thanks to Freenode (particularly tinyhippo) who facilitated the transfer.

Please now point your IRC clients toward #aeon and gradually remove #aeoncoin from your collective conciousness.

(For the record, we never actually controlled #aeoncoin either, so it's great that we now have an official IRC base.)
