I understand that Bitcoins obviously can't be traded without the internet, but, is this true only as long as the internet stays down? If the central internet technology went down for an hour, for example, would our bitcoins still be in the blockchain when the internet was back up, or would they be lost forever?

Well the thing is for bitcoin to go down, all nodes all over the world should go offline. So all data centres all over the world should run out of resources.
The chance this will happen is very small, but yes it can happen.

the only way that such thing can happen is if aliens invade earth for purpose of colonizing!

other than that there is just no possible scenario that internet goes down all over the world.

You are right there is no way that the internet would go down all at once on a global scale. if that happens then we are really being invaded.

even if internet goes down bitcoin is safe since we are keeping it on our own and many of bitcoin users have a copy of blockchain on their hard drive.

Fiat would also go down, as about 97% of the £ (other currencies are similar) is electronic in that it's just recorded on private ledgers held by banks. In both cases wouldn't the ledgers still exist? Not sure if bitcoin could recover.

If a nuclear war happens, everything will go down, in some places people might have to go back to the barter system.

For ex. think of Zombie movies, does the fiat or any other form of currency works?? They don't because every currency depends on a system, if it goes down, so does its acceptance.

Chances of that happening are pretty less... Topic should have been like "What happens to Internet if Bitcoin goes down?".

I've experienced a big loss when Liberty-Reserve went down, so to me, most things in cyber space look temporary, but actually, I don't think the cyber space itself would go down. That could only happen if the whole world goes down.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there one central internet agency in the USA who provides internet for the whole world? Seems like a single point of failure, if that place was attacked by terrorists or something like that.

The chance of this happening is indeed very small. I would say we can ignore it. Since it makes no sense to me.
Bitcoin and it's network had been proven to be a very solid and strong network.

If the internet goes down i think bitcoin will probably go down with them. I am not sure if it is possible that bitcoin will survive when the internet crashes

Then it will be unusable, I think USD cash would be affected as well so I think gold or diamonds etc... will be the most used currencies at that time.

I don't think they will be able to do anything about the internet, it's just too strong IMO... I doubt they can do anything about it... Regardless of that of course won't be usable if the internet goes down.

Yes its been made very strong with the growing internet facilities. But I feel if the internet goes down certainly there will be alternate solutions to make it stable.

The Internet can go down if there is no electricity any more. For example there is a TV show exploring this concept where people live in a post-apocalyptic world with no electricity trying to survive. Bitcoin will cease to exist but I think you will have far bigger problems than worrying about your Bitcoin stash  Grin

given the cayos happening in the world i wouldn't be surprised of nuclear war and in this case i would expect internet disruption question is what happens to Bitcoin if internet goes down?

home internet and mobile internet goes down

do not mean trade bitcoin to buy/sell i mean using it as a way of payment say you wanted to send money to someone abroad for family far away
block are move by internet connection,so if internet in this world goes down, also with bitcoin, they will down at same time,we can't do anything without internet connection,we can't sent bitcoin or scan wallet address.

Yep. The very concept of how Bitcoin operates is with this block. People use this block to verify and authenticate transactions across networks. If the internet is down then there would be no point anymore for Bitcoin as well.

yeah certainly paper money or penny will be the first choice. because if the internet down naturally. transactions at the bank and so will be paralyzed, this way, cash is in need and important

There would be some a massive panick action through the whole world. Chaos, anarchy or maybe even worse.

That will not happen, but if it will happen than many people will not be happy and that is very bad. Because there are people that is depended  on Bitcoin.
But the chance is very small to happen that and that good. But we will see, but the chance is almost impossible.

Internet is the heart of bitcoin, so I guess if the internet is slow, then the bitcoin transaction process also slowed because bitcoin delivery depends on the speed of the Internet network
