I have been telling my work colleagues about bitcoin now for about 3 years and they still think its a big joke.  I dont care because i believe that some day i will be the one Laughing......  I think alot of it is people dont like things they dont understand and would rather make fun off it.

So was just wondering has anyone else on here had similar experiences and how did you deal with it?   Wink

I don't think it's worth mentioning really. If you pique someone else's interest and they get into it then they'll just blame you when they make a monumental balls up even when you had zero to do with it. The rest will always lack the gumption to spend 5 minutes actually researching it before commenting.

Well, yeah...A lot of the people I know still think Bitcoin is just this funny Internet money, sort of like Gold in World of Warcraft. I just remind them that the World of Warcraft currency also has a real world value and, anyway, you can really use Bitcoin to buy things online if you know where to look.

without even using the word bitcoin. i bet atleast 50% of work colleagues laugh when someone says they invest in anything. ive seen people say its foolis to invest in microsoft because linux/apple is better. then say its foolish to invest in apple because samsung/android is better.

not based on logical investment criteria, but based on user perceptions of the products.

so even if you show video's of the canada senate loving bitcoin, video's and media stories from bloomberg showing many legit companies investing in bitcoin. even showing the picture of the UK's treasury minister buying bitcoin. many people will only think about bitcoins lack of being able to buy toilet roll in 3 seconds at the local 7eleven.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

I knew someone who's entire family laughed at his father for investing in the stock market. They all laughed at his father's expectations of making himself a millionaire through his investments. He never did, but he gave it a good try. If people laugh at stock market investors then you can't expect them to take Bitcoin investors seriously, unless they make fortunes out of it.

You are longer here then me. Im here for about 3 months ( yes much less then u), and for that time i tried to talk with people around me about btc but for now almost everyone make fun of me and they say I'm boring with bitcoins and things related with btc.
I can say i have similar experience like u, they say im losing time with this and i can just lose money. Well I'm a believer so their talks dont bother me much, im patient and I think time will show them how wrong they are.
When ever I find out about some good thing related with btc I tell to everyone, even to people who dont like btc just to show them how much they are not aware about this world of btc.

Very true. I'll bet it's a surprisingly small proportion of regular folks who actively invest in stock markets. I've only ever met one person who admitted to holding gold in my entire life. BTC is a few miles further down the ladder than that. It's still the earliest of days.

I agree with this. Its either people are interested in Bitcoin or their not. Don't bother trying to convince people who aren't interested it just causes more problems in my believes.

I have spoken to a few people regarding bitcoin and they are up in the air about it. They don't believe it will be successful and others don't really have no opinion. In the end, it is up for an individual to decide what they think of bitcoin.

there is alot to be had about how you talk about/introduce bitcoin.

EG going on a date
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "im an international currency trader"

talking to friends
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "don't worry guys, ill buy the pizza, and i wont even use dollars.. watch this"

talking to family
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "in 2012 i put $100 into investments, now i have $7500, so here is a first class ticket on that cruise you wanted to go on"

talking to work colleagues
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "here ill give you $10 of bitcoin. at next years christmas bonus. you give me whatever value that amount of bitcoin has then, from your bonus"

avoid talking techno jargon as the first sentance, avoid talking about the promise/possibilities of the future. instead use actual current examples and in words they will understand.

its much more believable to show the benefits of the past, then to show the promises of the future.
its much more believable to show the features people have already used upto today, then the technical waffle yet to come

Bitcoin investing is funny for someone, but i have friends that invested in traditional things, and they investing is loosing too much, and now i remember them that bitcoin is increasing its price.

If they invested in commodity stock such as oil or copper, they will lost a lot compared to the gain in bitcoin. But these guys still do not like bitcoin.

some people around me do think bitcoin is nothing more than a ponzi. but they have lowered their tone quite a bit lately. i have showed them that you can actually use bitcoin to pay for stuff and to send money from one place to the other, instantly.

i would never tell anyone to invest in bitcoin. i would talk about bitcoin and explain it but everyone has to do his own decisions.
maybe your colleagues are on the right side and bitcoin will be at zero in 3 days? (i dont think that  Cheesy )

nobody should be angry when some people laugh about bitcoin. i wouldnt even laugh when iam right because - i dont care -!  Wink

these people dont even understand 1% of it. the only thing that matters is that YOU understand it and know about the risks and opportunities (mainstream media will do the rest  Grin )

To be honest I dont want to discuss bitcoin with my family, colleages and acquintances until and unless I myself have understood about it like a pro. There's no point in introducing something to someone and leaving them on a mercy of Google to find answers to there questions.I want to get as much knowledge of bitcoin as I can before discussing about it with anyone so that I can answer there questions
