I have been telling my work colleagues about bitcoin now for about 3 years and they still think its a big joke.  I dont care because i believe that some day i will be the one Laughing......  I think alot of it is people dont like things they dont understand and would rather make fun off it.

So was just wondering has anyone else on here had similar experiences and how did you deal with it?   Wink

I don't think it's worth mentioning really. If you pique someone else's interest and they get into it then they'll just blame you when they make a monumental balls up even when you had zero to do with it. The rest will always lack the gumption to spend 5 minutes actually researching it before commenting.

Well, yeah...A lot of the people I know still think Bitcoin is just this funny Internet money, sort of like Gold in World of Warcraft. I just remind them that the World of Warcraft currency also has a real world value and, anyway, you can really use Bitcoin to buy things online if you know where to look.

without even using the word bitcoin. i bet atleast 50% of work colleagues laugh when someone says they invest in anything. ive seen people say its foolis to invest in microsoft because linux/apple is better. then say its foolish to invest in apple because samsung/android is better.

not based on logical investment criteria, but based on user perceptions of the products.

so even if you show video's of the canada senate loving bitcoin, video's and media stories from bloomberg showing many legit companies investing in bitcoin. even showing the picture of the UK's treasury minister buying bitcoin. many people will only think about bitcoins lack of being able to buy toilet roll in 3 seconds at the local 7eleven.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.

I knew someone who's entire family laughed at his father for investing in the stock market. They all laughed at his father's expectations of making himself a millionaire through his investments. He never did, but he gave it a good try. If people laugh at stock market investors then you can't expect them to take Bitcoin investors seriously, unless they make fortunes out of it.

You are longer here then me. Im here for about 3 months ( yes much less then u), and for that time i tried to talk with people around me about btc but for now almost everyone make fun of me and they say I'm boring with bitcoins and things related with btc.
I can say i have similar experience like u, they say im losing time with this and i can just lose money. Well I'm a believer so their talks dont bother me much, im patient and I think time will show them how wrong they are.
When ever I find out about some good thing related with btc I tell to everyone, even to people who dont like btc just to show them how much they are not aware about this world of btc.

Very true. I'll bet it's a surprisingly small proportion of regular folks who actively invest in stock markets. I've only ever met one person who admitted to holding gold in my entire life. BTC is a few miles further down the ladder than that. It's still the earliest of days.

I agree with this. Its either people are interested in Bitcoin or their not. Don't bother trying to convince people who aren't interested it just causes more problems in my believes.

I have spoken to a few people regarding bitcoin and they are up in the air about it. They don't believe it will be successful and others don't really have no opinion. In the end, it is up for an individual to decide what they think of bitcoin.

there is alot to be had about how you talk about/introduce bitcoin.

EG going on a date
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "im an international currency trader"

talking to friends
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "don't worry guys, ill buy the pizza, and i wont even use dollars.. watch this"

talking to family
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "in 2012 i put $100 into investments, now i have $7500, so here is a first class ticket on that cruise you wanted to go on"

talking to work colleagues
Bad: "im a bitcoiner, i use a decentralised unit of currency, cryptographically secured and deflationary that has no borders or single point of failure"
good: "here ill give you $10 of bitcoin. at next years christmas bonus. you give me whatever value that amount of bitcoin has then, from your bonus"

avoid talking techno jargon as the first sentance, avoid talking about the promise/possibilities of the future. instead use actual current examples and in words they will understand.

its much more believable to show the benefits of the past, then to show the promises of the future.
its much more believable to show the features people have already used upto today, then the technical waffle yet to come

If they invested in commodity stock such as oil or copper, they will lost a lot compared to the gain in bitcoin. But these guys still do not like bitcoin.

some people around me do think bitcoin is nothing more than a ponzi. but they have lowered their tone quite a bit lately. i have showed them that you can actually use bitcoin to pay for stuff and to send money from one place to the other, instantly.

i would never tell anyone to invest in bitcoin. i would talk about bitcoin and explain it but everyone has to do his own decisions.
maybe your colleagues are on the right side and bitcoin will be at zero in 3 days? (i dont think that  Cheesy )

nobody should be angry when some people laugh about bitcoin. i wouldnt even laugh when iam right because - i dont care -!  Wink

these people dont even understand 1% of it. the only thing that matters is that YOU understand it and know about the risks and opportunities (mainstream media will do the rest  Grin )

To be honest I dont want to discuss bitcoin with my family, colleages and acquintances until and unless I myself have understood about it like a pro. There's no point in introducing something to someone and leaving them on a mercy of Google to find answers to there questions.I want to get as much knowledge of bitcoin as I can before discussing about it with anyone so that I can answer there questions

Story of my life. What makes me the most pissed is that I see many friends doing such stupid investments, and I just wonder how much I could be doing for him/her...

I think your work colleagues will be pleasantly surprised is they would get into this themselves.  There is alot of potential with this and we need more people to get into Bitcoin.  My wife is bothering me with this all of the time.  Little does she know that the football game tickets and the hockey tickets I just purchased, both came from the profits that I made with Bitcoin.  Tell them to get on board or go away!!

I don't talk about bitcoin at work in general, though I have mentioned it to a select few coworkers.  The truth is that if one of them asked my why in hell you'd want to use bitcoin over cash, I couldn't give them a good reason.  None of my coworkers are sending funds across the world to family or anything like that.  There aren't any stores in town that take bitcoin.

The only thing I could possibly mention is its price volatility, which makes it possible to make a profit.  But if they asked me what the point is in owning it, I really would be hard pressed for a good answer.

Future potential surely? There isn't an advantage in using it for payments at present apart from the occasional discount, but I spend it where I can as there's something very satisfying about getting in on a potential ground floor.

I don't think it's in any way ready for prime time yet and I would fully expect your average personage to have little or no interest or understanding of it. That's probably for the best for now.

Forget them.  Now is the time to laugh at them.  Sooner or later BTC will make a change for the better and anyone who had the chance to get in and did not, will be sorry they did not.  Think of it like this.  If you would have got into BTC when it was $10 each and you would have purchased 1,000 shares.  Now this would be enough for you to do a hell of a lot more than what you did with that 10,000 you spend.  it is an investment and some people doe not see past what is in plain site in front of them.

try not to give investment advice to your friends coworkers or relatives.  its a lose lose scenario as they will blame you either way.  and if they gain they wont give you any credit for it anyways.  buying for speculation is foolish.. chances are you wont be laughing very hard in the end.

Just let them laugh, they will realize their mistake after you can show them what you can buy with bitcoin later, if you want you also to show them your bitcoin money and then calculate it to your currency

I think it will stop their laugh once they know your bitcoin wealth

I have been telling my work colleagues about bitcoin now for about 3 years and they still think its a big joke.  I dont care because i believe that some day i will be the one Laughing......  I think alot of it is people dont like things they dont understand and would rather make fun off it.

So was just wondering has anyone else on here had similar experiences and how did you deal with it?   Wink
your story is something general, i think everyone who uses bitcoin and being in a city that very few bitcoin users will have the same situation.
when I was in college, my friends also doubt my intention to adopt and collect bitcoin, they laugh at me too, but I answer them by continuing to use it until now.

was quick to bring it up to me but when we went from 300 to 450 no one said anything lol

Yes people are same kind all over the world. Those who refused are always looking for any losses with the bitcoin investment, which is like they themselves assume that they have taken good decisions in their life.
But for those who are having faith in bitcoin will not bother this kind of people or any downfall of bitcoin.

Time will decide who had taken good decisions and who will be benefited by adopting bitcoin.
There are many frustrating moments when we are spreading bitcoin to our friends or colleagues. But I never mind them.
I always concentrate to talk about bitcoin to many new people.

Any way you have made your friends circle to follow bitcoin prices. That must be half the victory.
Among my friends, only very few had accepted my words to adopt bitcoin and invested some little amounts. The other people are just following and watching bitcoin very keenly to take any decisions like those who had adopted.

I strongly agree with you, people who make fun of bitcoin they seem like they're from 80's.Those old folks. they are just people who do not know the technology or maybe just envious of people who adopt bitcoin.

Just let them laugh, they will realize their mistake after you can show them what you can buy with bitcoin later, if you want you also to show them your bitcoin money and then calculate it to your currency

I think it will stop their laugh once they know your bitcoin wealth

Trust me it's not gonna work. A few of my friends still nags bitcoin is dead because GOX crashed a few years ago. It's better to keep this to ourselves.

You probably shouldn't be caring honestly. You could take some time out to get them interested in bitcoins as well.I'm sure if you stop getting annoyed by them and explain them how beautiful the bitcoin world is,they'll start getting deeper into it.Don't get offended, convince them.

It's alright, I mean... you have to think about what's in your best interest in the long run of things... and if you truly believe that bitcoin is the next future currency and have a passion for it, then why does it matter about what anyone else thinks? Fuck 'em... Just make sure you don't invest more than you can lose on this type of stuff though, because bitcoin could fall at any given time really with the volatility in the market.

When i mention it people become scared,  they are fearful because

of the maths cryptography I.T and networking behind it. Was the same

when i used to talk about the internet to people, they are afraid

of the unknow, some even swear againt ever using technology.

Everybody is using smart phones now though, they wont be able to

keep their job if they dont, thats how productive technology is.

It would be because they are in a group they can joke about it

to allay their fears, make no mistake its fast aprroaching.

People are not interested in how money work, where does come from the value etc.
Current system works at their small level and they won't question it too hard.

I don't understand why it is so easy for people to hear just the bad news and keep that in mind. A friend of mine who I recently talked to about bitcoin after a long time again knows little to nothing about it, yet he believed that btc was used by the french terrorists to obtain guns. Really? This is a bad joke. Of course I told him that the bad guys would much easier use cash than a complicated cryptocurrency that isn't even 100% anonymous. Made me sad and killed all bitcoin conversation for the evening and probably for a longer time. Perhaps he is just butthurt that he didn't get into btc when it was time. He does watch a lot of tv and reads newspages on the net, but not to the point of disbelieving what is presented to him. These kind of encounters make me think we are really only at the beginning and everyone getting into btc in the next 5 years is still an early adopter.

Yeah I have tried talking to my co-workers about BTC, most have no idea what it is or they misunderstand it completely. Of coarse not one of them is willing to do their own research on the topic, so I have just stopped talking about it to them completely.

Bitcoin for the "common" person to understand is hard. Most people are so closed minded and think fiat currency is that only currency, while all other's isnt important or worthless. Atleast where I hail from heh

Everybody is using smart phones now though, they wont be able to

keep their job if they dont, thats how productive technology is.

It would be because they are in a group they can joke about it

to allay their fears, make no mistake its fast aprroaching.

Did you explain by telling about cryptography and networking? It's the wrong way to explain. Most people do not grasp these concepts.
You should explain with concepts they understand. These concepts will do better:

Tell you get an extra $100 from the web monthly (outside of your job).
Ask how they prepare for financial crisis

I have been telling my work colleagues about bitcoin now for about 3 years and they still think its a big joke.  I dont care because i believe that some day i will be the one Laughing......  I think alot of it is people dont like things they dont understand and would rather make fun off it.

So was just wondering has anyone else on here had similar experiences and how did you deal with it?   Wink

Let those people rot in their ignorance, that kind of people just cannot be saved, don't waste your time trying to show why it's worth getting on Bitcoin and how they can be pioneers by getting in now because those guys are part of the 99% that don't get it and the reason we'll be rich in a decade.

I have mentioned to a few people that I am into bitcoin and told them where to find out about it, I haven't told anyone to invest due to the fact you can lose money and they would only blame me so the choice is there's pointing them in the right direction is the best thing I can do.

Mine (in my case 2013 knc jupiter 550 gh ..53 btc till end of life......and now 2 titans (one orig big mistake 10,131.80 usd DUMB) but got lucky on March 2015 panic (supposed new big ass scrypt miners coming out .which meant I got a great deal on used Titan...figured I had till June to mine.then thru dumb luck all them big scrypt miner announcements were scams (alpha tech etc) or cancelled (volcano etc) So 57 btc so far equiv and prob can get 10 more out of it. Say 110 btc is what I'm looking at end of life on last of my home miner equipment...

So when they say "man you lost your ass in BTC (2 instances so far but this holiday season and it is still young) now that it is down to $450 (amazing how they know this ..in that it supposedly would fail.why do they know the price?) anyway...thrust of conversation is was $1000 usd now $450 usd I got screwed ..or so they think.

I then explain that I 'mined' BTC. (or in case of Titans LTC I will move to BTC when ratio is right ...sucks now)...I bought the equipment not the coin..thus I have 100 btc plus (again probably 110 btc end of equip life) or about $45k in BTC at this point in time...I guess you were not listening the 4 or 5 times I tried to explain this to you. (both instances...two different folk this conversation I've had so far) ...so after that reply it is ..well..

Kind of a conversation killer at that point in time. Smiley They kinda get a shocked look ...like I just slapped a nun's ass and wander off mumbling...

Well if we are lucky in 2018..we will be the 'despised rich' and treated like 'evil bankers' for our 'shady secret ways...of not telling everyone about this'
in 20/20 hindsight.....everyone will say our 'explanations sucked' or were unclear or whatever....imho it was more ...closed mindedness..but that lead
balloon won't fly...it will be ME not being clear enough on this 'lost' chance...if BTC goes nuts in the future....imho sheesh

But anyway from 2013 has moved from Evil Ponzi/Scam to in 2015 'reckless/stupid/risky speculation...(but not a scam per say). ...PROGRESS!

So I guess that is something anyway....from "Flim Flam Man in 2013 and con artist" to Amway or Fuller Brush Door to Door salesman status in 2015
...Onward and Upward!

Many people don't even know how to explain how the current economic system work so they think they are on some crazy ponzi scheme. I'm not a Bitcoin fanboy, to me it has miles to go and still in its infancy, mostly in terms of adoption. Common people actually laughing about Bitcoin is a sign that it's too complicated to adopt and use, plain and clear.

However, if you have some spare money, one should have investments like this everywhere really. What's 1 or 2 BTC for many of us? another useless appliance for the house? Bitcoin has a huge potential and it's foolish to not hold a "share" of it if you understand how it works.

On the other hand, it clearly has no real value compared to other stuff. You can say fiat doesn't have inherent value itself but it's not the same. The BTC marketplace is still highly manipulated and there are not many mainstream uses for it.

Talk to a Venture Capitalist....the best you can ever get on such is 50/50 ..if it is better then 50/50 odds you don't need to get capital ..folk will see that and toss money at your project.

Thus it is with me and crypto..don't spend more then you can afford...I hit my limit (equip/elec per month) and will stop here end of life on equipment

But BTC to me is a lot like say 'airport land' you have two places they are gonna build a major new large city airport...you kinda 'have to' take a chance and buy land in 1 place or the other because of the potential of a windfall.....if you pick right you win EXTREMELY BIG for your risk..if you pick wrong its TOAST

thus the old 'big risk and big reward' motto

or as my Dad said on such investments ..the best thing to do if you decide to 'go for it' is mentally build a fire in your mind and burn the $$$ .that way if it rains and puts out the fire (you were correct) you are 'pleasantly surprised' otherwise ..you made your choice..its probably burnt...and forget about it for  couple years etc

who knows...but the odds of me having the inside track of ANYTHING at this level of return ..on the ground floor ...as a speculative venture capitalist kinda 'shark tank' kinda thing is unlikely..so this is my ONE speculative shot at something like this...win/lose no inbetween that much is true Smiley

Yes, it has happened to me at a small scale. People say "How may Bitcoins did you get today?" in a joke tone, or make weird looks when I tell them I earned some bits (because they think it is too small earning).

Totally agree with you. You can compare it with early internet 92/93 were writing an email was a pain in the a** if you had no idea.
When you told your friends about it their faces turned into something totally weird. Most of them didn't get it at that time.
Today it's part of our daily life.
Bitcoin needs time to mature and improve in usage and how it works. This is kind of an evolutionary process and doesn't happen from now to tomorrow.

I can't really blame them for laughing. The concept seems far fetched anyways for people to take it seriously. It's been this way for years now and I don't expect it to change any time soon. The only possible way for the perception to be changed is if the price were to take off which we haven't been the brightest as.

Correct Bitcoin still have to go long way to function fully , but now who ever knows about it should keep faith on it. their are peoples who if dont know about it will degrade it and tell all faulty excuses, i also told my friends about it but that time i was using faucets so i was also not that much convinced, but now i am using this forum and signature campaign and i am able to earn around $150 per month

and now when i am showing them my wallet and its value they are also getting interested and asking me the procedure to do it.

That's probably for the best for now.

or tell them it is like owning a tiny part of the internet in 1995. that would be a good idea , right  Smiley ?

Quote
Well, yeah...A lot of the people I know still think Bitcoin is just this funny Internet money, sort of like Gold in World of Warcraft. I just remind them that the World of Warcraft currency also has a real world value and, anyway, you can really use Bitcoin to buy things online if you know where to look.
I don't think that this is a good thing to do. Going front against them. Plus bitcoin is serious stuff that even Forbes is talking about now. Making connections between bitcoin and money used in video games is far from being fair to it. It just destroys all of its credibility in people's eyes. You'll just get answers like: "ok yeah, Gold in WoW actually has value in real life? Well you'd be a dumbass to convert your 'real' money into this 'gold'" is the kind of answer that you're more likely to get (and, sorry, but I'll side with them there, except on the "real" before the word "money" when talking about fiat).
Bitcoin is NOT a video game thing. It's an investment and a revolutionary technology.

People will tend to not believe in something that they fear or know nothing about.
If that was 3 years ago I would think you would be the one laughing right now. If you held all the bitcoin you could of received since then. You should have accumulated a fair bit in a span of three years if you have not spent it. It's value nearly tripled since then.

I do not think that this will make much of a move for someone like he is explaining.  They seem like they are egotistical, and something like this would just spark the response of "where is all your money then"!

Well you can't "win" that, if bitcoin is down it's "I told you so", if it's up you just were lucky. If the people I told about bitcoin back in the days had bought only 10 bucks worth of coin that'd be a quite nice christmas gift now. They still haven't bought any because it's to late anyways (wish I could buy more of that to-late coins now).
Whatever, doesn't matter, you can't change people and most simply won't give a fuck about how money works, just enjoy your extra bucks if you're up and the awesomeness of using bitcoin Grin

I show them the price it was at in 2012 and show them the price it's at now, then I smile and walk away and never mention it again until they mention it to me.

Sometimes, they may show you the price it was at in end-2013.
Price is almost the last thing you should talk about when you list bitcoin's advantages.  Smiley

Playing the price's game is just the speculators' job. Price is just the price. The underlying features bitcoin brings to us are really important. Actually many ppl heard it before. Why not try it? You wouldn't miss out this century great invention.

I did a work presso at a middle tier bank in 2011 about bitcoin, when bitcoin was $5.  Didn't have to say too much more.

I am sure they are laughing at you thinking that you are a total fool who decides to invest in a type of currency that has lots of risks. I do tell you that those colleagues of yours will reach a point where they will beg for just a few coins after the demand has really escalated. One thing they may be fearing the coins is because they have been associated with criminals. Also in most cases they are not formally accepted currency in most countries but this will change and they will start envying you.

Your colleagues are ignorant. They laugh at something they don't even understand.
If they were laughing and giving you arguments as to why bitcoin is stupid.. you should take notice... laughing at something you have no clue what it is..

When I tell people at work they don't even know what it is...

But besides that, you can be the last laugh when in 15 years you retire and they are still sitting at work for another 20

I exactly had same experience and still do with my classmates,i told them about bitcoins and they were laughing at me and didn't believed anything i said to them about some awesome and unique features of bitcoins..well obviously i ignored there opinions, everyone has there own opinions but someday they will believe whatever i told them when they will check and see for themselves..Earlier when i didn't know about bitcoins and first came to know about it,i was also shocked like "Shit! is it possible? a real crypto money?" but when i become familier with it then yes now i understand and use bitcoins,so just give people some time.they will surely understand one day.

Exactly, that is absolutely correct, Let them laugh right now but at the end of the carrier they would be crying and we would be laughing as they are are not aware about the future where bitcoins is going to stand in the future and that is the reason they are making fun of it, bitcoin is a future but when they would come to know it would be too late, its our duty to introduce them to bitcoins but if they are not interested then we cant help.

Everytime I have talked to someone in person about Bitcoin, I have gotten the same response: Mostly negative or in distrust, they can't even fathom that there is no one charge. "Who is the CEO"? they don't really understand the concept of decentralized currency yet.

These guys don't deserve to pioneers. It's best to ignore them while you work hard on your Bitcoin portfolio secretly, so when we hit 10K in the next 2 years you tell them that you own Bitcoin and they'll hate you but you will feel like a good.

I had a few laughs at them when the bitcoin price doubled recently. I have a few people like that to whom I have explained about Bitcoin in detail but they never believed in it, in fact they even asked me to not put anything in it and I told them they were wrong and I will prove this to them, the price was around $220 when I told them that this is the right time to buy but they said it will lose this price too, I went and bought as much as I could and when the price went up I made my profit and I showed it to them and had good fun proving them wrong.

But the thing I learned is they are still skeptical after all and so basically the best thing to do is just ignore these people and let them be. Haters gonna hate.

I don't think it's worth mentioning really. If you pique someone else's interest and they get into it then they'll just blame you when they make a monumental balls up even when you had zero to do with it. The rest will always lack the gumption to spend 5 minutes actually researching it before commenting.

Yeah. There is really no point of telling anyone. Most people don't understand and couldn't really give a shit about bitcoin.

The skepticism is very recongnizable; vast majority of the people I know regard Bitcoin as dangerous, some odd thing on the WWW, or are completely unaware about crypto. And I'm not only talking about older, more traditional people but also highly educated folks in their 20's and 30's, owning the latest smartphones and addicted to social media, but still (very) reserved about crypto.

Can confirm that. I know guys who studied computer science or work as IT consultant and still don't get what Bitcoin is and therefore believe all the dumb articles they read and see in mainstream media.
Still a very long way to go for us.

IMO, the problem is that there is really no need for an average Joe to use bitcoin. People dont see a how would their life get easier and better with bitcoin.

People get salaries in fiat, do taxes in fiat, pay mortgages and rents in fiat, buy groceries in fiat, pay online with credit cards and paypal where they get instant confirmation instead of 10 min, etc.

And sure you can find few individuals who do these things in bitcoin only, anddont mind waiting 10 m or more for confirmations of transactions. But these are exceptions.

I have tried telling a few people but i would never tell anyone that i never got on with very well so never had much of a problem and def not been laughed at. The thing your so called friends are more than likely so deep into the current system and mind fkd that they have little to know idea what you are telling them. If you explain to someone who knows the grasp the banks and those in power have they are the likely ones to listen and research for themselves. Tip, dont worry what others are doing they will wake up one day.

Skepticism and mockery will automagically vanish on next bullrun Wink

In my circle of friends it already started to vanish.
A few months ago I was giving a presentation durung lecture about Bitcoin. Price at that time was around $230.
Now I get often told by these guys, that they regret it not to have bought a bit of Bitcoin. As a note I never suggested these people that they should buy bitcoins and I also told them that it is quite risky. But I also explained the huge potentials this technology has and why are some people are willing to take that risk. The bigger the risk the bigger the return if it succeeds right?!

Some people around me were not laughing at me, but were more skeptical in a way that they think my investment in Bitcoin has not brought me profit, because they say it went up to over $1000 and went back down to below $200. They don't see that the coins I have bought well below $100 are now worth +$400. I don't care about the $1000 peak, I look at the long term, and the long term brought me great profits. They only look at a very short time period and think it all vanished. Cheesy

Let them laugh and make fun of us, we are the one who will laugh the loudest. Smiley

At the very first time they laugh... Then they angry... After all they beginning to believe and see some great potential. But as usual - it is too late;-).

In fact, Bitcoin still too volatile.. but at my point of view it is far from it's real price right now.. at least $120-$150 underestimated.

There was some reasons to laugh when it falls from all-tme high $1100++, to the $500. But now.. don't think they have to even open mouth to start again:-).

My father and my brother always used to laugh at me when i say about bitcoin and how its volatility has creted lots of oppurtunity for profit over months. But father get convinced after i gifted him nice watch and my brother some mobile topup via bitcoin. Actually watch was by exchaning bitcoin to local currency. Now they leave me alone when i am in laptop. Cool Cheesy

It is scary that people who are addicted to social media, and are embracing technology, walking everywhere with a smartphone are so reluctant to trust in bitcoin.
It is as they are already product of 'generation Facebook' and can't seems to process different technology other than "one company to rule them all".

People often tend to laugh or just response that they do not understand how something virtual can have price and someone is buying it.
I try to explain idea behind and fact that price of Bitcoin is free market price and it`s somehow showing importance and interest Bitcoin is taking.

Making others regret is not a real success of a bitcoiner nor bitcoin community. Together we can succeed is the philosophy we here in this community believe in strongly. So, showing them some short term results of good returns from bitcoin investments will make them to change their mind set.

Sadly the 99% of people are only interested in gains, so don't even try to explain them anything that has a philosophical touch about it. To convince people, you have to show them how much richer you are since you got into Bitcoin, that's that.

Agree! You need to be convinced about the success of Bitcoin and/or your investment in the coin. Let others think what they want.
There are enough examples in history when people were first laughing and regreted afterwards.

Let people think what they want to..

So was just wondering has anyone else on here had similar experiences and how did you deal with it?   Wink

same as my colleagues!

they don't believe in "btc environment" or in algorithm … they classify all as a "drug coin" "internet coin" nothing that could be good for their life.

Only some girl seems appreciate the concept of the ecurrencies but I think they don't appreciate only this Smiley

Actually I am surprised, even after so many years, bitcoin hasnt seen major breakthroughs in adoption. It always seems like it get popular for awhile then fizzles out. Even amongst the techy people
That's a real bitcoin problem, maybe people still scaring about bitcoin issue or the fluctuation price of bitcoin maybe..

Then, we are as the first adopter of bitcoin should leading a people to use bitcoin how their life will be easy with bitcoin.

Yes, when the future price of bitcoins are not fascinating, then the core concepts of bitcoin like capped supply and how it will replace Paypal or western union or even dollars may make some people to rethink their opinion on bitcoin. Making them to think about bitcoin must be a big achievement than giving up our motivation.

Yes, a lot of people, even smart and economically inclined, do not understand bitcoin or what it means and its very interesting to me. I think its something more computer-savvy people understand. They like the rest of humanity will be forced to understand it to some extent when it becomes economically favorable for them to use it. Right now it is still very small.

I would mention it to them. I would use free or low-cost investment ways to do this. A low-er cost way than to just

buy btc directly. Mining altcoin then converting to btc is a longer, but cheaper way to go about it. This is what I do.

If they join here, I would tell them to learn as much as they can and after they get to Member level, they can then go

for a signature campaign for more btc.

I once introduced bitcoin to my sister, she just said, "too complicated".  End of discussion. Never tried again ever since. If ever they realize bitcoin's value, it would not be from me. Maybe from people more capable of explaining it to them or maybe google.

That's usually story. Using bitcoin is just too complex at the moment for average people. Most people are happy with fiat as they get their salaries in fiat, pay rents and mortgages with fiat, pay for groceries and fuel with fiat, and have no time to waste with btc<->fiat exchanges, 10 minute confirmation times, installing and learning how to use bitcoin software.

That is a very good analogy. In 5-10 years, our relatives, friends and colleagues will think they have missed the boat.

I have been engaged in 'stupid conversation' once with my friend who found about Bitcoin before me brought me here.
I asked a lot of 'stupid' questions back then - but I become fond of the cyptocurrency idea ever since.

Wink
Lol they can laugh but after few years if the bitcoin price incrases and if you save some bitcoin they will be interested what did you do where did you get these money, people are known to be ignorant but when they understand the truth will be simple late.

without even using the word bitcoin. i bet atleast 50% of work colleagues laugh when someone says they invest in anything. ive seen people say its foolis to invest in microsoft because linux/apple is better. then say its foolish to invest in apple because samsung/android is better.

not based on logical investment criteria, but based on user perceptions of the products.

so even if you show video's of the canada senate loving bitcoin, video's and media stories from bloomberg showing many legit companies investing in bitcoin. even showing the picture of the UK's treasury minister buying bitcoin. many people will only think about bitcoins lack of being able to buy toilet roll in 3 seconds at the local 7eleven.

I think people need to get a true definition out before the situation gets any worse, see a form of investment and money are two different things, think stock in a company vs cash in hand. You can't use shares in walmart or @ an ice=cream stand. This is the heart of the blocksize debate , @ 1 Mb it becomes an expensive investment vehicle, that cannot be viably used for everyday commerce.

I'd rather see Bitcoin traded in money markets , rather than stock exchanges.

Well, let them laugh. I too have friends who laugh at me because I ever I say anything about bitcoin, does that means I should stop using bitcoin? NO. So do what you feel is good for you and just leave the rest on almighty.

Exactly, they are laughing right now let them laugh as they are not aware what bitcoin is all about, and at the time or retirement, you would be getting retired very early and they would be still working and at that time you will be laughing at them, So if they are not tech friendly then we can't help and if they don't believe in innovative things and don't want to learn anything new we can't help them.

Let people think what they want, if you believe with bitcoin then go on. "Mind is your business"

But the real challenge is making them to mind on bitcoin ecosystem. I made them to think by explaining the core financial concepts of bitcoin in our conference hall just a a friends get together. Adopting or neglecting is their own wish, but I made them to keep on asking me some doubts and they are following bitcoin keenly.
Before I ignore them, after they laugh at me, I would like to tell them what bitcoin is and how bitcoin make your life easier then the choice is theirs.

Same situation here with my peers. I have mentioned about bitcoin and even after making them fully understand on how it works and how it copes up with the market price, they still mocks and makes fun of me.

I also showed them my monetary profit from time to time as he price of bitcoin rose upto $400 but still they are afraid of its volatility.

Let them mock at me, I am still contented and I will laugh at them afterwards. Wink

This is the best advice you could get, just ignore them because if you tell them about it, not only they will think you are some sort of conspiracy theorist weirdo by implying we need to secure our wealth outside the system's enforced money, but after shaming you, they will come asking for help once it goes mainstream and everyone talks about it and wants to get that precious BTC.

Just keep buying while it's cheap and get a good portfolio to get ahead of the pack and them watch them cry as you become a millionaire.

friends: it took me a few months but now most oft them own some
family: they are still very sceptical. my mother bought some and my uncle is interested in blockchain tech now.

no one every laughed at me. some did tell me i will loose money though....well i proved them wrong ;-)

(i bought my first btc at 30$ and was lucky to catch some at 3$ later - i lost most through thefts though)

I keep quiet.. make an account here and chat with bitcoin lover/believer better =)

A scam will be a scam.
It won't sustain in long run, cause they can't make $ for you at all, they don't have any business model or investment plans to make money grows.
All they did is use other people's $ to pay other users, so those who earned $ is just from other victims... in short a vicious cycle.
People KNEW, but they just dump their $ in hoping for a miracle.

Maybe I have to give another example for people who can't understand.

Is great to tell them that you earn quite a lot of money with it.
But is better to just let it is don't listen or make fun with it.
For me they are friends who know what it is, but they don't have interest. So I just do it for my self more money for me.

Is great to tell them that you earn quite a lot of money with it.
But is better to just let it is don't listen or make fun with it.
For me they are friends who know what it is, but they don't have interest. So I just do it for my self more money for me.
We just need find friend that have same interested in bitcoin, ignore friend that laugh of what your interested.

So was just wondering has anyone else on here had similar experiences and how did you deal with it?   Wink

Just talking about Bitcoin to all of our friends may identify the really interested persons. Identifying a friend who has some interest on bitcoin ecosystem is not a big deal.

No problem, let these people laugh very hard at us. In the long term we will show them what our investment in Bitcoin did. I am sure that we can report a gain of at least 100% while the people that are laughing at us only get 1-3% interest on their savings. They won't like it. Smiley

Who cares, man? Get on with your thing and let them get on with theirs. They're probably into stuff that you think is dumb too. You might have the last laugh.

Your colleagues don't know what you are into. probably they think that you are introducing to them a ponzi..You let them laugh at you, atleast now that bitcoin is a bit stable and price is good, you could now laugh at them if they are just starting to collect.  Cheesy

Can't do much else but try to explain it to them. It's to the point now though that they don't even listen.

It has been a natural behavior in humans to laugh at those things that they can't understand or admit as an alternate vision of the world. Unfortunately the bitcoin is still a very recent phenomenon and most people is not yet familiarized to it, but I think it is only a matter of time to get the sufficient respect and credibility.

Yes and if you dont use Bitcoins, they may also laugh at anything else. I think the best idea is to see what suits you and carry on with that, discuss your family and then take decision in case you feel confused.

At my company there are a bunch of people who either own bitcoins or at least are interested in "blockchain technology" from a theoretical point of view. Then again, my company is very high tech. Your mileage may vary.

That is a typical usage for any kind of new technologies. The first major application of bitcoin is the Silkroad.

Let them laugh at you, there's nothing wrong with what they are doing, It's just that they are not into the idea of collecting bitcoin, as long as they are not hurting you while laughing at you, its just fine..The thing is, when you have collected a lot of bitcoin and share to them what the bitcoin brought in to your life, they might start collecting too, but might be late, you collected your bitcoin when the price was low, and they will start collecting it at high price and might probably asking you to help them and it is up to you if you are going to laugh at them..

I do agree that people laugh only when they don't understand properly the fact of some plan and other than that are the previous fortune programmes who created negative image in minds of all as well might be another reason for them to laugh.

Yes, I had very similar experience.
A lot of my friends was and are still very skeptic about bitcoin.
Even my wife thinks that I'm loosing my time and money on useless things on Internet Smiley
How I deal with it?
I don't talk any more about this subject.
I keep silent, collecting my bitcoin funds and waiting for bitcoin revolution Smiley
After that, I will be the one Laughing.

That's the best strategy. Even if you do. You're learning and dealing with money not playing games.
