Now I feel... obliged... but... no much coins to gamle.
You're good on numbers Philip, can you give me idea how much will cost me to cover (most) of my gap with reasonable hash? If I can afford I'll try NH for the first time.
100th at .003 is .05 btc or 23 usd that gives you 4 hours of you at 100th rest of pool at 150th you should do about that much since rental price is a little high. so you are risking 0.05 btc to get 1 coin extra. the two coins only need a little hash. all of us have an equal chance of our zones of 1 % so the 0.05 is a chance for the extra 1 btc. I would consider putting in 0.05 for 100th for 4 hours at .003 price in your case, especially since my big rental has dropped off.

Thanks, I think I can afford that... sent deposit to NH and waiting... so... depends how long 2 confirms takes and how long from order to pulling hash I may also end up donating chances to the next guy Can I ask another advice: where to point rental? NH is cheaper than WH is eu.bravo server accepting 3334 ? OK - just did it, and it's working

LOL... LASERminer you are indeed the quote bot today To give concrete answers to Phil's questions: eghigo 80.50% 81.49%
81.50 to 81.89 say the block hits here who wins? dsppage 81.90% 82.89%
From 81.50 to 81.69 it would be eghigo. From 81.70 to 82.89 it would be dsppage. 82.90 to 83.29 same question who wins? closest a split or no one
carlsberg112 83.30% 84.29%
From 82.90 to 83.09 it would be dsppage. From 83.10 to 84.29 it would be carlsberg112. Just so I'm clear on doing a big rental here, my win zone is 81.70 to 83.09?

... I'm still working out rules for upcoming rounds. There will definitely be a range. That range will probably be around 5%. You will likely only get 1 pick - which must be made prior to the round start. The prize will be rolled over into the following round if nobody's guess wins.
This means gamblers would shot massive rental just once, if I am grasping "zone rentals" correctly.

Yeah, you bring up good points. I haven't set anything in stone yet. Maybe we do 2 picks. Maybe you have to be mining the entire round to qualify.

I like multiple picks as it keeps you in the game for whole round, also gives incentive to gamble more (more likely will spend 5x 0.05 instead of 1x 0.25). I think this way overall average (rental backed) hashrate of the pool will be higher.

I had so many people try so many angles on the giveaway thread. We ended up with a) a set range pick for each and every one as low as you want -0.1 0 0.1 0.2 0.3 0.4 as high as you want. b) at least on site for 2 months c) at least 30 good posts d) picks started at a certain block e) picks ended at a certain block f) I assign a pick if you make a non eligible pick this set of rules helped the giveaway a lot. still not perfect but better. so 2 coin prize 0 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 end at 96 then 1 coin prize 100 104 108 112 end at 196 if block goes over 199.99 no winner this could work or a variation. gives each player a 4 % zone and a 1 in 25 chance to win 2 btc the first 100% gives each player a 4% zone and a 1 in 25 chance to win 1 btc the second 100%

I do like the rule having to mine the whole round. Any amount of hash but entire round with shares submitted 20 of 24 hours each day. Keeps the people from just playing without contributing and also fake accounts from being used. You want to play but don't have HW? Rent 5th for a week, there are ways. I also like Phils pointers since he's done this before. All good points. I mine here all the time with different hash rates as most other playing so that's a good way to keep it going with honest people.

My miners are hosted at "guest location" running only by night and they may (and do) have random day off. I believe I'm not alone who can't mine 24/7 (not by choice) also this rule would favour 1GH USB stick owners over my 4TH contribution. If you go for minimum hash idea - it will push off other group of small miners. Same for minimum share contribution. This lottery is much better for USB stick miners than solo forever route. IMHO this contest aim is to add extra incentive for anyone to choose this pool (and throw rentals) on top of joining good independent pool but not to make it interesting to only professional farms maintained 24/7.

there are a few points lets say next time 20 people 5% = 100 % we all have exactly a 1 in 20 shot at the bonus of a block in our zone. this is a great thing for the small guy some of us can afford a big rental for our zone this is a good thing for the big guy. I don't mind if a small guy gets 5.00 to 9.99 zone and mines 1 compac stick relying on us (rest of pool) to hit the block in that zone. helping the little guy out is okay as later in the btc game he could help me out. weighing the right prize for zone hit vs zone hit + block hit is important. maybe 1.5 + 1.5 not 2 + 1 also setup a join period say during 0 to 5% and see how many join say the 20 at 5 then cut off joining after that. this does stop my judypug1956 joining after my philipma1957 missed. just suggestions as I will toss hash here either way we do it.

Sorry that I missed renting extra for Mike and my zone...
I was either sleeping or working...
My new guess will be 100% -- and I hope the block is solved prior to that...
As far as mining for the entire block -- The only issue I have with that is that we had that awful DDOS attack during this block. I'm traveling and I was getting calls from home 3 or 4 times a day telling me that my miners were going crazy (beeping) -- It was only the 1 miner pointed here -- but they don't know the difference. I had to take it off the pool until the pool issue was resolved. I was pretty sure that Jonny would be OK with that under the circumstances...
Other than that exception -- the whole point of the contest, I believe, is to build base hash -- so it would make sense...

Yes, obviously if the pool is down for any reason, that time would not count against you As stated earlier, I'm still working on how the contest will run in future incarnations. I like the suggestions so far, and the discussion is helping to identify potential gotchas and to provide some good insights. My new guess will be 100% -- and I hope the block is solved prior to that...

pushing 400th for a bit
we are at 80.56
so I am working for eghigo
80.57 and moving
make that 80.60
once the pool is running over 500th numbers do move faster.

new guess : 105%.
the percentage being close to each other seems fine as long as it was picked well in advance. it seems to me gap of .2% is fine as long as folks are picking into the future, -gt 10% of the current share %.
that leaves it open to luck plus some space for rental without someone sneaking in while you're renting. within 5-10% of your guess, you'll know know the percentage layout is now fixed and how to best structure rentals.
edit: i think an extended fair way is to earn .1% buffer credit per your 24h hash rate up to 1% or n%, but that may be getting a little complicated to manage.

Interesting thought on the "earn a buffer for every X days of constant mining". Would definitely be a bit of a pain to manage... but would add an interesting flair to things. Hmmm...
