Not for now though but some day another cryptocurrency will replace bitcoin. I suspect it would be DAO, its demand will grow later when its DAPP are being used, voting and smart contracts come in real. The Project is too big to fail and so it will soon be great. I believe in BTC so much but dare I say it you should also invest to DAO.

We don't know what will happen in the future, but as of now, we can rightfully say that bitcoin won't be replaced by any other cryptocurrency.

There are some good crypto currencies but for me bitcoin is the real deal. No crypto currency will be able to replace bitcoin that easy.
Especially the bitcoin eco system is very strong these days.
Simple comparisons alone, the number of support and backers of bitcoin is dramatically superior than any other crypto currencies. The number of adoption and integration, is also obvious that bitcoin's superior.
These reasons alone already proves that it's never going to be easy to replace bitcoin.

But bitcoin will surely be replaced by another crypto, but not today. There's someone/some group bound to make a better crypto but it's probably going to happen in the next few decades.

If there is a crypto currencie able to change the world that currencie its bitcoins, the other may follow and reach the same level, but the rank of bitcoin is and will always be king of currencies, it has opened the doors of crypto world and since then the world is learning.

I will have to agree with that. That is why others are called altcoins I think. But what if the forum is litecointalk. Is bitcoin an altcoin to them also?

You hit the jackpot. Your argument has hit the point and the reason why other coins was named altcoins is because they will complement bitcoin. Alternative coins are there in case bitcoin will fail. And so alternative coins are not meant to destroy or replace bitcoin as long as it survives. It serves as a support currency to bitcoins.

Very good answer and I can't agree more.
In fact, I personally believe that in the future we will have many virtual currencies, in the same way we have now many ''offline'' currencies in the world.
In business and in the most countries people use only a few main currencies like USD, Euro, GBP etc.
It will be the same with virtual currencies and I'm sure that Bitcoin will be always on the top, one of the main used virtual currency.

I agree with you.  bitcoin have established it's fortress while other cryptocurrency are just digging for their foundation.  I never removed the fact that it is still an open market where everything is possible to happen.  I also believe that in due time bitcoin will have it's rival and it may possibly be overtaken by it.  But it is not now.

I really don't understand what most of you guys are saying on this thread... There have been no arguments as to WHY you guys think that bitcoin will not be overtaken by another currency.  All I've read so far is basically that Bitcoin will not be over taking because it is more widely accepted in the cryptocurrency world, and because, well, it's bitcoin.

That's not a very valid argument.  Bitcoin has been shown to have many flaws in it's code that devs are now working towards fixing... There are still debates going on about block sizes, anonymity, fungibility, etc. etc....

Simply saying that it is the most well known and that it is highly priced/sought after for is not a valid argument for Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is an experiment, so, it is possible that some other coin with more technical features may be replacing it in a few years. Bitcoin as a lot of limitations; many of the other cryptos already surpassed those limitations. There are a lot of cryptos out there so that means that the bitcoin killer was already developed or sooner or later will

Ethereum isn't really a "currency" like Bitcoin is, so it's like comparing apples to oranges... And then litecoin is pretty much the same thing as bitcoin without all the bloat...

None of these two coins change how we would use cryptocurrencies as a currency.

Well if Ethereum isn't a currency, what is it? A currency is defined as something used as a medium of exchange or something that is used as money, a definition that Ethereum seems to fill nicely.

Ethereum doesn't really change anything about cryptocurrencies aside from being generated though other crypto "resources" and being generated through applications and people moving things through it. it adds a nice concept, but at the core it doesn't do much more than add a few numbers and fuse some features together.

I mean that's true, but in some circumstances and in other cultures 1 cow and 2 goats will get you a plow for your farm; does this mean that when you talk about cows and goats you automatically think of "currency"?  No.

Ethereum is, at least how I understand it, a token that can be used for smart contracts/apps... It just seems, to me atleast, that Ethereum can be and should be viewed as something completely different than cryptocurrency.

I more liked to call ETH is half of the currency, because it's like a bitcoin and no having many different with bitcoin, and basically the working system eth in bitcoin is same but, maybe caused by it's rarely to find ETH exchange into the fiat , because a lot of people is exchange their eth into bitcoin before withdrawal it into the fiat.

If you think about it, so it bitcoin. It cannot be considered only as a currency because it also has the characteristics of a commodity.  If by some miracle a platform was created that can execute apps and will use side chain bitcoins to power these apps, what will you now classify bitcoin as?

It is true, can never really forget about Bitcoin as it is the founder of the most known set of cryptocurrencies and your explanation is pretty spot on.

Yes it is possible but i dont think will be happening in short time, bitcoin can or cant be replace its depend on the user and how the developer advertise and adapt their new coin
If a lot of user keep on using bitcoin then bitcoin will be hard to be replace because bitcoin is the pioneer and more people is getting used to used it
