hi, i've decided to take the plunge and have a go. i have two msi gaming 290x's under water. i can not find any modded bios roms for these? can anyone help? they both have hynix memory
set 1250 strap, and clock memory 1500. Stilt's bios for ref 290x works with this card. I flashed MBA_C6710101-100_K2_AGR_STILTMXT_V46.zip I got better hashrate with XMR and ZEC, but ETH mines poorly with this bios.

R9 390 1125/1625 (1125 strap, hynix): Looks like it is somehow memory limited, 1700 (1125) gives even more hash. Same clocks give 920 h/s on xmr and 31.3 + 313 on dagger+pasc.

Been a while since I updated this thread.
Basically with ZEC 12.2 Claymore the 7970/280x gets around ~320H/s.
His miner software improved so the hacked memory straps make less of a difference then before from stock speed.
What's disappointing is that the R9 290 runs at the EXACT same speed as the 7970. The Stilt Bios straps caused freezes and I had to revert to stock bios.
Going to play around with the Hawaii and see what I can get.
EDIT:
I got a Reference R9 290 with Elpida memory. Took the 1250 Strap put it into the 1625 and run at 1000/1625 and got 375H/s. So a little improvement. No idea if its stable long-term however.

repaste that r9 290 and you can get 1100 core out of it quite easily. at 1.1875v
i like to use the 290x rom and lower mem clocks though.
i have found removing the faceplate dramatically improves potential.

Removing the backplate makes a difference. Repasting any reference GPUs does nothing. Even repasting some AIB does nothing. Just waste of time.

Maybe the paste I used was crappy (AS5) but it made no difference on any reference GPUs that i've owned. Maybe made a difference on some AIB.

not crappy but as5 is old school and has a notorious cure time to reach maximum efficiency.
i'll concede the reference cooler leaves tons to be desired but re pasting usually entails dusting off the fins and if you're doing it right.. taking care of the mosfets and replacing those terrible stock memory chip thermal pads too. this brings new life to lots of equipment, not just the 290's.
i think for the compute unit itself, gelid's GC-EXTREME is a good safe TIM.. according to manufacturer as5 has like a 200 hour cure time and requires several thermal cycles on top of that. if you have a stable rig running 24/7, cycling it with breaks to cool components just isn't practical.

latest AMD drivers dont allow modding, they will crush windows and such. anybody knows which is the latest driver (and bios) that we can edit and not be flagged down?
there is this big issue on the cards now

Replacing the crappy stock memory chip thermal pads with what, exactly?
Please provide link to a better thermal pad, or explain if you are using copper shims.
Thanks.

Your speed is already fast, no more than 2-3% gain with the BIOS.
