But it's already implemented. Code doesn't just decay spontaneously, if it works it works. Also, its a lot easier to make modifications to code than to code something up from scratch. So if small modifications are needed in the future he'll be able to do it even if he is "less skilled". But even then, lets not knock web dev skills. I'm a backend developer myself and while I'm capable at web dev, I'm not great at it. I've come to respect those who are, as its a different beast with its own unique set of challenges. Bringing good web dev skills is important, especially since the website is what everyone interacts with. If the current state of the back end is functional and we got the web dev, I say we're doing OK.

@drays did a good job at getting some very valid points across. But I'm still not sure everything is kosher.

You don't know what you're talking about. The other dev left because he wanted something with a much bigger scope (and consequently about 100x harder to pull off). He also didn't like the legal status of this site (dodging lawyers isn't for everyone). The technical problems from webtorrents were solved with transitioning to IPFS.
