Will someone explain me why at over 30% increase in price in the last 7 days at bitstamp and over 50% increase at mtgox people are still selling big time? What's the logic there? Why not hold?

you're confused about what liquidity means

Are you referring to my preferring to consider USD volume? If so, I'd like to hear your thinking there. It'd be pretty amazing to see both, BTC volumes from a year ago and today's prices right now. Yet today, selling enough to, say, buy a house compared to selling the same a year ago isn't a very big chunk of the daily trade volume.

Or maybe you take exception to my ribbing about the general idea here that speculation should increase liquidity, therefore decreasing volatility. I could have phrased that better to begin with, but my point was: if that's true, then given the barrier to speculate has now been significantly lowered, volatility should decrease. I guess we'll see!

Smarter than you.... look at the charts stupid. We keep bouncing back and forth. Weak hands handing over to strong hands, mostly because of the zero fees.

You could always try and prove me wrong though! But looking at your recent posts, I doubt I will need to check back on this.

Well, my 0.76 has become 0.71 - like I said, even with 0% fees, I'll still end up with squat. It always, without fail, goes the opposite to what I do.
Maybe I should get a bot and set up to Crazy Ivan....

..well you should probably be re entering now.. if you sold in the 1100+ range.. and you'd be up. Remember watch those candle sticks.. you aiming to sell on a high part of  green and a re-enter on a low part of a red.

I don't particularly believe one way or the other at the moment. Looking at the charts for the last few hours, the swings seem to be much wider than before, but it's pretty early to say.

What I'm getting at here is:

-The general consensus answer I've seen here is that speculation is good since it provides liquidity.
-Similarly, the general consensus answer seems to be that liquidity decreases volatility. (makes sense on the face of it)
-Ergo, increased speculation should lead to decreased volatility. And lo, we have a live experiment!

That's all, really. If my point was fuddled before, I apologize. It is late.

Every time I go for a market order, it says I don't have enough funds, when I clearly do. It's so frustrating.
By the time I've refreshed the page, and re-entered the same volume of cash that I put in first time, the market has run off without me (again)

I think it's a vast improvement (although it could have been even better but whateve's) I'm happy that it tells you the fee you will pay.

having this problem too.

Make sure you hit MTGOX link over again (hit refresh on the page could do the same thing)

I think the engine is just going mad.

That being said I dont think the tops and bottoms are as easy to call as earlier and I've learned when i'm up to walk away so good luck, taking my 0.42 BTC profit and going to bed

If you're putting a market order in because the price is swinging like crazy or just dropped fast, you're likely not going to get filled anywhere near the bottom due to the gox-lag. Count yourself lucky that it prevented you from sending a market order or else your order might have only got there at a price you don't want. and cancelling it would take another lag time.

Also, I don't understand why you are using market orders during any kind of swing. Never use them, its a terrible and stupid thing to do. Place a limit order at the highest price you are comfortable with and it will take the lowest ask (or highest bid) once it gets there.

Also, copy paste does work and you should make sure you don't have any opened or pending orders.
