I remember one time around 20-ish years ago, I had changed my number about a year earlier, so I decided to call my old number to see if anyone answered.  I was not expecting anyone to answer, so when someone did answer, I was a little caught off guard, and so I said: "Is JJG there?" and the caller said:  "This is he."  He responded just like I would have responded, and he sounded just like me.  I can't remember what I said after that.  I probably just got scared (and freaked out), and I just hung up the phone without saying anything further.

This is so wicked..remember the "Frequency" (2000 release) movie?
If it was 20-ish years ago...maybe you just watched the movie and got spooked because of this?
EDIT: upon re-reading your response, it is almost exactly like "Frequency", albeit the protagonist in that movie talks to his dad 20-25 years earlier.

One day, maybe about 15-16 years ago, after I read "Moon is a harsh mistress" for the first time, I got a call that had NO number ID...and, because of what I just read, i asked..."Are you an AI"? ...or maybe I said "computer"?
Mind you, this was many years prior to the current AI crop and the massive volume of scam calls ...I only asked about it because of that book in which AI called the protagonist to establish machine-human intelligence contact.
The voice said: "Why do you think this is the case"?
I mumbled something inconclusive, but the voice did not lead in any interesting direction, so I disconnected.

First of all, JJG, you can't leave us hanging in the middle of the mystery like that. 😄

Who was on the other end of the line? Did you accidentally connect to another dimension?

I think we all have stories like these. One day we should start a thread just to share those weird memories.

I remember something similar around late 2006. I received a call on my old Nokia 8310, but instead of a phone number it simply displayed: NO NUMBER.

I answered, and the caller asked, "Are you MY FULL NAME?"

I said, "Yes."

Then he asked, "You are living in MY AREA?"

By that point I was already getting nervous, so I asked, "Who's this?"

He calmly replied, "Your friend."

...and immediately hung up.

I was so freaked out that I switched my phone off and didn't turn it back on for quite a while. 😂

Years later I learned that calls from certain security agencies or sometimes telecom operators could make their caller id appear as NO NUMBER. So it was probably just some sort of "security" verification call.

...which, thankfully, I seem to have passed. 😄

This thread is full of these stories, even the most private of us share once in awhile.

But you need to be here for it or read a backup as we usually delete when we share to much.

I remember my childhood phone #.  But don't know any of my immediate familys now. lol.
when i was a kid we only needed to dial the last 5 digits if we called local, guess life was simpler back then lol
Same here.
And if you were short on change, you could "morse" in the number quickly using the switchhook, which made it possible to call for free from public phone booths.
Transformation to digital phone networks ruined that too  Angry
Once i saw a YT clip where a couple of today's teenagers were confronted with an analog telephone (with the old dial plate) and asked what they thought this device is for and how it works.

Similar, but slightly less funny:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZSZB0z-Nt0

From that demonstration, I conclude that rotary dial is not intuitive, even though rotary dial has not been out of the mainstream scene for very long.

Nah, just kids these days are fucking stupid

The real problem is they are too stupid to know they're stupid.

I had a saying when I was a kid "Advice is free" and I listened always even when I disagreed.

Kids these day don't understand the value of a persons time that has been there and done that.

I don't know.  I got tongue tied (and startled), and I hung up.

That is right that each of us likely have several stories like these, and they might have differing variations/outcomes, and one funny thing could be that someone might call you and even act weird like that, and then you hang up and shut the phone off, but then later on you find out that in reality the person calling was some actual long lost friend, instead of some stranger who was trying to get in your pants.

These days so many of us tend to be afraid to answer the phone, even though every once in a while some of the calls are coming from people and/or businesses that we had pre-engaged, but they merely were not in our contacts.  Sometimes we might even forget that we are "expecting a call back" so we go into "silent mode" to our own detriment.

You might be correct that the level of their dumb that was shown in some of those takes were either made up or they really are dumb.  I doubt that young people are as dumb as they are made out to be, even though surely we have a society in which there are fewer and fewer opportunities for employment in repair, since so many products tend to be throw away, so then only a narrow set of people know how anything actually works, to the extent that there are still mechanics involved beyond the existence of software.

OT: yen intervention, JPY up to 157 something.
KOSPI (S. Korea) is up >17% today.
Normal markets, lol.

not OT:bitcoin is steady to up, surprisingly  Smiley

Bitcoin seems to be holding its own for now, in spite of the fairly severe negative blow to self-custody over the weekend, starting on late Thursday, no?

Researchers have developed an AI framework to identify Bitcoin transactions suspected of money laundering and other illegal activities. The system achieves an 89.4% accuracy rate.

If you are doing anything illegal, it appears you'll be easily found and dealt with.
Of course, within the powers that be, and certain dweebs promoting paper bitcoin without understanding what brings value to bitcoin, there is a desire to make it seem as if anyone who engages in self-custody and/or transacts with his bitcoin directly with another person or a business is or has been engaging in illegal activities, and if they had not engaged in illegal activities within one or two transactions back then surely if we go back several hops, then surely there were illegal activities in there somewhere, right?
Not to mention the one out of every ten people that are going to be persecuted for the false positive!

It is hard to know the numbers since for sure there are already a lot of examples of chain analysis evidence being used in abusive ways by the powers that be.  Perhaps a form of terrorism?  They are desperate, so they resort to desperate measures to unjustly prosecute and unjustly punish normies, especially if they seem to be advocating privacy and self/financial-sovereignty , which there are surely a lot of avenues for both privacy and self-sovereignty within bitcoin to the extent that the tools of bitcoin are not continued to be attacked and debilitated when possible which scares both developers and bitcoin users and also likely undermines bitcoin from achieving its own fair market value since bitcoin is ongoingly being beaten up by the abuses of paper bitcoin.

Yep sometimes "we" (not exactly royal in this case) do end up going overboard from time to time, and some guys even felt needs to change their user name (and start over).

I have likely not used a rotary dial in over a quarter of a century. Or to put it another way, the last millennium.

Though I think they still work with POTS and I assume the telcos still charge for dialtone service.

I drink 1 quart of water before I go to bed after supper say from 9 to 12 .

Started having to get up early to pee so now I try and make sure to drink something about an hour before bed then at bedtime drink a glass of liquid so I don't wake up thirsty and have a tactical wee so I'm not starting out behind the curve.
