He still has the current contract and instead of being happy that they want him so much, he starts to invent strange stories. Yeah, Barcelona is trying to reduce their wages bill, in particular they're setting a maximum of 10 million euros (about the same in USD as it's now at 1.06) for new contracts and renewals. They're also going to try to lower the current salaries as well, but not sure if that'll go well as you mention.

if we go back a few years, Barcelona has often pressured players from other clubs to insist on a transfer. Just remember Henry, Fabregas, Dembele Coutinho... now Lewandowski. I am not sure why they behave like that, what is worse, such transfers have most often proved to be failures.
