I think McTominay is still inconsistent and he hasn't really displayed abilities that can amaze people, therefore McTominay is always second in command. Playing as a backup is indeed not a good achievement but playing at Man United with so many other great players could be a place for McTominay to forge his skills (I think he still has plenty of time until he reaches his best peak).
