I would have asked why you would be thinking of death when you are apparently just starting your life, then it dawned on me that death is inevitable. I still wanna live very long so death is the last thing on my mind right now and I know God's gat my back but if I am to do what you wanna do, I would just write a will with my lawyer then open a safe with a good bank to keep all my wallet details which are to be disclosed to my lawyer in the presence of my named nephews and nieces and all beneficiaries only when I am deceased. I have an arrangement where if I should come up missing for a while, one of my close friends will reconcile my estate, that is, liquidate my positions, consolidate the funds, and pass them to the Miss.. I haven't really made any kind of plans in regards to something like that, but I guess I might as well set up something so that the rest of my family is able to get their hands on my Bitcoin in the event that I die. I don't know if the small amount of money they would get from something like this would be worth the time since there would be far large payouts from life insurance, assuming I die from something covered by that, but you never know.

I'll probably have a usb or two with text files with a ton of different keys, with IDs like A-1 or whatever, and on my will I'll have the correct private key listed.

Your siblings may not care about Bitcoin, but they likely do care about money. And if your wealth can help them or their kids or a charity i'm sure they'll be keen to figure it out.

Do you have a will? You should start with a will. And you don't need a lawyer for most of it, a lawyer will just have to deliver it to the Executor or Administrator (that you choose, someone you trust) to carry out your wishes.

Open a safe deposit box, put your private keys in it with instructions on how to use them and any passwords to online wallets you may have (where you don't have private keys). Then leave instructions on how to access the safe deposit box in the will (no need to state that there is Bitcoin inside).

In the mean time you should talk to your siblings or a close friend about your interest in Bitcoin and that if you die someone may need to cash a few in. Don't allude to how much you have, just say it was a little curiosity so you bought one or two.

Yeah don't trust those lawyers. For me what I did was store my private keys in paper wallets. Which means I printed out my private keys in documents and left it in security deposit box in the bank. This safety deposit box is written in my diary and in the event I die, my heirs will get it. Though it's nothing too much, but it could be something in the far future.

To be very clever here, I would say that you should give those private keys to their parents in a way that they won't be able to care much about it, like putting those keys in a locker and give the keys to either the parents or the niece or nephew themselves if any of them have complete sense and knowledge about what they are getting, and take a promise from them that they will only take it after you die. Well, one of the biggest things when it comes to Bitcoin and the owner dying with it as that you're going to have to establish something in writing with all your private keys and such, in your will with a LAWYER to ensure that everything is taken care of in an appropriate legal manner. I never thought about it like this to be completely honest, I don't really have any plans for who I can give my Bitcoin to in the event that I die. Maybe I should get that figured out before I do end up kicking the bucket to be honest.

Bad idea. Sharing your password with anyone is not a good idea, even though they might seem trustworthy right now. The whole notion behind bitcoin is that you don't need to trust anyone for your bitcoin to be stored, as opposed to a bank account. Of course this offers complications such as when you die, nobody has access to your coins, but this is a necessary sacrifice to make to get the anonymity of bitcoin.

As I said, nlocktime is an extremely good way of letting your loved ones have access to your coin when you do die. Obviously it's not something that everyone wants to confront but it does need to be addressed eventually. All they need is a bitcoin address, and the raw tx, unsubmitted. They can submit it once the block height is over a certain number.

I don't think that converting it into fiat is a good idea because the possibility of earning more money in the long term will get lose because the possibility of price increase in bitcoin is still high for these incoming years and i think that just converting it into fiat will unable them to earn and have a great asset on their young investment portfolio. I think it is better if he will just explain it to his niece and nephew on what is bitcoin first and try to find out if they are worth it to give inheritance to them.

Well it really depends on the amount of BTC we're talking about. If you give your lawyer access to 100BTC, he will look it up and see it's currently a nice amount of money. Maybe not enough to screw you, but he will not forget. Then in some years BTC is at 10000$ or more, the lawyer is tired of his job, he might think he can retire in a South American country with your BTC...

If you are worrying who will benefit on your bitcoin when you die, Evaluate your love ones first, think whose needed your help most  then, as soon as today, educate him/her regarding bitcoin.  If he or she shows no interest, then he/she losses his/her chance to benefit on your bitcoin.  Look for somebody in your family who will show interest and I am sure that one of them will show interest and maybe they will invest on bitcoin when he/she found out how you earn using bitcoin even you are still alive.  Then, both of you will benefits on bitcoin. It is still better and safe to just teach those kids about bitcoin instead of trusting a lawyer because you can't be sure if he will do his job in bitcoin, if he will turn over the bitcoins after of your death. Since Bitcoin is unregulated in most of the countries, it is certainly possible that anybody can claim your Bitcoins. I don't think will in this case would work too, you need to give out private keys to your nieces, nephews rest no chances.

Unless OP lives in an area where mystic wills are allowed (the will would contain the private keys), even those require three witnesses ready to testify the authenticity of that will which may be a risky proposition as those witnesses may or may not be alive/available at the time of the testator's death.

This problem can be solved by using smart contracts if there is a foolproof, non-tamperable way to digitally record one's death. I can't think of any such way other than, lets say, you not signing into your email account for more than 3 months or whatever you set it at.

Bad idea, obviously the odds of someone finding this seed in your book is extremely small, but it simply cannot be ignored especially if you are planning on giving massive amounts of bitcoin in your will. I would be lying if I told you I hadn't thought about this thing OP pointed out. Death is inevitable and most times comes when least expected. It doesn't select age before it visits. I think OP is just being very pratical about it and would like to have a very clear cut approach if anything happens tomorrow . Its actually a very nice thing for preparing oneself for any things that happens tomorrow. That is very easy. Before you die just in case make a letter. If that happens it will be delivered to one of your siblings. Tell them its a huge amount of money and explain everything on that letter on what they need to do. I think you should make a savings book at the bank. The money you earn from bitcoin is sent to it. You just make a will to leave all the property for your two grandchildren, they will inherit the whole property without worrying about being raped. Nope it is not easy at all, you say before you die, but what if you die suddenly, like in an accident then your coins are going to be lost, and if you reveal your private keys to someone then they are the owners of the coins, so like you see this is not an easy matter at all, since someone could steal the private key from the person you gave it to and then rob you and leave you with nothing.

Another option can be, put everything in a secret place. Records of all your private keys, records of all your bank accounts and properties and written testaments that if something happens to you, what's been written in your testament will be binding, and secure them in a safest place you think is and secure a trusted individual also or a lawyer and have them sign with the third or fourth party for the agreement. I haven't really made any kind of plans in regards to something like that, but I guess I might as well set up something so that the rest of my family is able to get their hands on my Bitcoin in the event that I die. I don't know if the small amount of money they would get from something like this would be worth the time since there would be far large payouts from life insurance, assuming I die from something covered by that, but you never know.

I'll probably have a usb or two with text files with a ton of different keys, with IDs like A-1 or whatever, and on my will I'll have the correct private key listed.

I also haven't been considering on what to do with my Bitcoins in the event of my death because I'm still young, but that is irrelevant because death can come to anyone at any point. I also don't have anyone I can rely to since I am also single and without any living descendant.

So in case of something happening to you that trusted person will take care of things after you . I think this one sounds fairly nice solution to the ops question. They should put the hardware wallet into banks locker which would be most safe place around. Then as per the bank norms he will have to put the name of nominee in case of the death and the stuff. So easily he can out either siblings name or parents name on the nominee list and give it bank. Then rest is assured I guess. Moreover there will be no question of lawyers and stuff as he will have it clearly stated that value access to be given to those particular siblings and thus they will understand the rest once they see what's inside it. Well that note should be protected by a will, that only the event of your death that is only the time they will know the passwords to your Bitcoin wallet. Also you should know that there are no guarantees that it will fall into the right people because the possibility of the one who will inherit your Bitcoin does not have any idea on what Bitcoin is, to avoid that happening you must train them first hand on what Bitcoin is to give them some first hand experience on using or at least cashing out their Bitcoin.

If a person has no close relatives he wants to give his bitcoins, I think the option of letting the bitcoins get lost on purpose can be given a thought.
When somebody is dedicated to the bitcoin project and he wants to do the whole community a favour, he has the possibility to reduce the supply of bitcoin by removing his share of bitcoins out of the system.

I think it is better to just create a simple tutorial or instructions in a notebook and tell your wife or other part of your family to read it when you are completely gone because it will be the guide for them to have your bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies as a insurance that they will get money once you die and they don't need to worry for their money because they can sell your cryptocurrencies and get it into fiat.

My siblings dont care about any of this, however I would like my nieces and nephews to get some of my profits but they are still very young right now. I dont trust lawyers to give them my private keys. I am wondering, what can I do?

You can trust me bro, just kidding, how about you try writing a letter explaining everything about BTC then store it in a safebox hide it somewhere safe give them the password then ask them to find that safebox once you're gone.

If you die it would be too late to do anything or assign a directive to anyone. That will be dying intestate sort of. This isn't really what OP seeks. Sorry to disappoint you though. Anyway, I think many  people will eventually fall to this kind of scenario at their death except death writes a letter for warning us of its coming. There's so much secrecy around the Bitcoin or cryptocurrency in general that everything looks like a secret that should be kept tight. From password to private key to seed to what else have you that should be hidden always.

I agree with this one. Since you are single, go out, explore the world, make connections and maybe you can meet someone whom you can share your life with. No one can tell whether your nephews will be interested in bitcoin in the future. That's why I think, you should have your bitcoins converted into cash and buy a one or two property or anything tangible that you can pass down to your nephews. Let's say, a educational plan, maybe. Surely they can use that once they grow up. This way, you can make sure that they will be able to use whatever you will leave them rather than just the private key.

Generally in banks we have nominees which means that after our death our nominees will be able to access our bank accounts but no such feature is present in the case of Bitcoin. In Bitcoin all our BTC's are secured in the online wallets which are opened by the private keys that only we know. It is right that if we will die than nobody will be able to access our wallets and our whole money will be wasted.The only way to overcome this is that we can share our private keys with the one whom we trust.In this way our money will be used by our loved one after our death and our hardwork will not get wasted .

Look for a partner right  now if you have money you can look for a partner very easy. Entrust your private keys to her so if ever you will die there is someone who will cash out your bitcoin.  And one thing more say to your partner to help your nieces and nephews.

Nobody should benefit from your wealth anyway mayb your children or your parents. Just let your wallet cease and indirectly you are helping the entire crypyocurrency community by actually burning some of them xD. I would make myself a riddle giving clues on my fat BTC wallet and if they could solve it means they are worthy enough to access my private key. You can just hide your keys and organize a quest for your relatives. I guess they will be happy to take part in it in some decades when bitcoin reaches enormous amounts
