Can't say about only ERC20 but can say about all of altcoins. ICOs are still very perspictive but there are a lot of projects and you should just carefull learn about company where you want to invest.

It's only promising if it is unique than the others and are not making exaggerated claims. If it is not one of those that I mentioned then don't invest in it. But still make a critical assessment of yours just to be sure
