I am changing prize to 1 black factory sealed trezor. This trezor is provided by trezor they made an error on my order sent me too many black ones and not enough white ones. This generously fixed the order by send me whites ones on their dime. I told them I would do the next promo and give away a black one. While mentioning their generosity in fixing an error. I also must mention when btc added bcc trezor did a good job of allowing access to the bcc. New contest picks to start at block 1116.Experimental Image Contribution: Let's see how this holds up over time. If it works well enough, feel free to quote it Phil. rules to follow old thread link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2057465.0

HMMMM this Trezor not the other one and Trezor was good enough to send me a white one free of charge due to an error on their part. Not many crypto coin companies are that good for service.

isoneguy = 3.0 <- getting ahead of myself curious what became of the previous prizes thanks phil! they are on hold and will be given after this prize. I had promised trezor I would do a promo for them the next round. Once they were nice enough to send the white one out to me. I will run the contest until I give away the Trezor then the 2LTC + 1 compac stick. Would love to see more players so I can give away the prizes.

This is not yet a guess, just fun with numbers.
If Difficulty were to go up (just) 8.32% this go-round, we'd be at difficulty of 1E12. I recall late summer 2013, when no one believed that difficulty would hit a Billion by the end of the year. (It did, block 276192, on 12/21/13)
I've been sharpening my dart this week. This is a more difficult prediction than I thought. Thanks for funding the contest!

While I have participated in these before, I have lost my sense of how the range works when we are into negative territory. If as an example, what would I choose for the following: Estimated Next Difficulty: 922,529,973,147 (-0.08%) Would that be -.1% -or- 0.0% ? I'll wait a bit to make a guess, but thought I would ask now, since it seems possible to me will be in for decrease in diffiulty. Thanks for doing this again!!!

This time I had to guess on my own. I couldn't get the cats to cooperate. The oldest was scared of the garbage truck, the middle one wasn't interested, and the youngest one was eating (he's a bit of a pig).
As always, thanks for contest Phil!

If someone wins this time, you should update your Trezor firmware as soon as you get it. They've fixed a recently found vulnerability.
The vulnerability requires physical access to the device and cracking open the case, so it's not that earth shattering. But it's still worth doing.
I updated mine as soon as it was available.

just updated mine today, mainly to split the bcc out. whoever wins this, trezor is probably the best hardware wallet you can get.

wow this bitcoin cash drama is escalating. I expect bitcoin hashrate to go down while people switch to the most profitable coin. i mean, why wouldnt you ? But it all depends on the price. I still have my Bitcoin Cash, waiting for it to pump like crazy at the height of the drama. Dont expect it to replace bitcoin though.

Mining BCH has been NEGATIVE profitability 'till very recently, as they took too long to get the diff down and the price was too low. Recent price jump is turning that around. I'm sitting this contest round out as I don't have any interest in the Trezor.

I am guessing alot of Antminer S1 and KnCMiner Jupiters are coming online to mine BCASH. Since those ASICs might actually be profitable again for some...
Seems like the hashpower came out of nowhere. BTC difficulty is not dropping significally.

Interestingly enough a tweet says Bitmain has or will plan to move 170PH of hashing power to BCH. It won't be the longest chain as it still won't have the most cumulative POW, so don't worry about it too much.

At least one major private mine with their own chip seems to have started miner deployments. It's NOT all about Bitmain and hasn't been for most of this year - just largely so.

Just like Trezor developers, I think add2psu developers are honest too. I have ordered 3 add2psu delay from them and received add2psu instead. After telling them the issue, they sent me replacement order with correct items very quickly. I also learnt this mistake after selling my bag thinking that they are delay ones, and buyer informed me. I have offered him either full or partial refund and he has accepted partial refund.
Organizing a promo to giveaway your free Trezor is a good idea.

Miners switching to BCH finally made their impact. Will be interesting to see what will happen after BCH gets its needed difficulty adjustment and profitability on the chain drops, likely people switching back to BTC.

Gentlemen, the difficulty show is just beginning. Volatility ahead ! Bitcoin core better implement solutions for the mempool soon...if not everyone is in for a rough ride once the spam comes in like crazy and miners switch chains again to mine BCH. transactions will be costly.

Right now, it looks like it will be another roll-over.
Bitcoin Difficulty: 923,233,068,449 Estimated Next Difficulty: 882,157,991,586 (-4.45%) Adjust time: After 185 Blocks, About 1.4 days Hashrate(?): 5,678,041,587 GH/s Block Generation Time(?): 1 block: 10.6 minutes 3 blocks: 31.8 minutes 6 blocks: 1.1 hours Updated: 16:40 (6.1 minutes ago)
Looks like going forward, difficulty changes may well be driven more by BCH activity and price, and less by new mining hardware being added, or old miners being removed. Wild times indeed.

Looks like hash rate will keep sloshing back and forth: https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/why-bcash-mining-shouldnt-affect-bitcoin-much-bitcoin-mining-could-ruin-bcash/The reason why miners can do that is the BCH rule that allows for mid-period downward difficulty adjustments. Without that, it would be a lot more costly to keep the BCH chain alive when it's less profitable. Effectively BCH was designed to enable coordinated miners to manipulate the block rate to their advantage. This will continue forever as long as long as BCH has enough value to make it worth while. It could well be that this is the only tangible reason why BCH exists. It's not because big blockers wanted it. It's because the large mining pools can profit by it.

yup. may turn into the equivalent of altcoin profit switching. massive amounts of hash power flipping back and forth as miners use autopilot profit calculating programs to run their farms.

Hopefully the November 2X fork won't cause a similar issue or else they'll have even more to slosh between. I guess we'll be seeing BCH for a long time and possibly 2X if the entire community doesn't go with it. Will be interesting for BTC price as well.

I sold off some coin today .38 for 1576 usd
I do not think I will be holding heavy coins I may sell off over the next 2-4 weeks.

That's not new to SHA256 - quite a few altcoins out there already to switch between, though most of them have been TINY compared to Bitcoin (like Namecoin or DGB) and therefore the profitability has bounced a lot on them.

Well, as of now BCH is just a trader and speculator's toy to mess around with and a miner's dream for more profit. 2X will be another fork like you said and it could have a more drastic effect on BTC's price (and possibly mining if it uses another BCH-like difficulty model). Only time can tell at this point, but from what I can tell 2X won't be too pleasant.

Sure there have always been other SHA256 coins, but they've only amounted to a tiny bit of noise on the Bitcoin signal. You have to admit that the scale here with BCH is unprecedented. Even Garza's Paycoin (everyone here remember that scam?) didn't have this effect on the difficulty of the main chain. That said, I agree that BCH will wain. It has no value except for speculation and cyclical mining profits (for the moment). IMHO, BCH is just Bitmain enabling the big block true believer bag holders. Guess who wins in that scenario? If the 2x hard fork actually happens, then we will see the original Bitcoin verses two speculative alts. If BCH hasn't already tanked, it will at least have to share the remaining table scraps with the new 2x alt. Sure, 2x wasn't designed to enable miner manipulation, so Bitmain won't support it. But 2x is sure to to have a speculative following of some sort. Regardless, competition among the alts that have no real economic reason for being will help dilute them both. I suspect that come the new year, none of this will matter. Miners will for the most part return to the original Bitcoin, and the forks will flounder. A year from now the forks probably won't even be in the top ten.

I see btc diff dropping more then 20% hashrate is about 6,700,000,000 for the current diff of close to 886,000,000,000 I can do longer find current diff numbers live time and current hash rate according to viabtc is at 4,700,000,000 Why are the live time diff trackers off line?

Try this: http://bitcointicker.co/networkstats/good it works and we are looking at a 20% drop in the diff! but switching is easy look at the hash on viabtc 6600p is close to the baseline or a 0% change at 4300 for btc at 3800 for bcc/bch a drop from 6600p to 4300p = more then 33% drop. if btc goes lower hash then bcc/bch we will no long have alt coins since every coin will be an alt coin. we would just have cryptocoins just definitions as I see it.

It would be nice if the bitcoinwisdom guy would update his website - he seems to have largely ignored it most of the last year and some, and the "freezeups" are getting irritating. Seems like quite a few folks have been "bouncing" between BTC and BCC the last few days, since BCC price went up enough to be competative on profitability, per https://blockchain.info/charts/hash-rate?timespan=30daysUnfortunately, that chart doesn't track diff, but https://blockchain.info/charts/difficulty does.

Yeah and on Aug 24th 1:58 am we were at block 2016
So 24 + 24 + 10 = 58 hours
so 257/58 = 4.43 blocks an hour vs 6
or 73.8% that means -26.2%
I need to check the time span better
block 482093 was at 2017 8 - 26 - 16:04
block 481834 was at 2017 8 - 24 - 04:49
that is 24 + 24 + 11 = 59.25 not 58 as I guessed at above
so 257/59.25 = 4.337 blocks an hour vs 6
which is 72.29%
or a 27.71% drop
freaking amazing!
now we are only 257 blocks in.
and the hash is on BCC/BCH it can flip back here at any time.
So the 27.71% drop can move up fast.
I could be off just a bit as I think the new diff started at block 481834 if someone knows this to be wrong or true please let me know.

This will be one spectacular drop if it's even more than 20%. Never thought I'd see the day this happens, difficulty will probably keep increasing as it was once BCH profitability lowers and if EDA is modified but 2X could be yet another alt causing difficulty drops. Don't know about you guys, but if this format continues difficulty contests will be like finding a nail in an even larger haystack than before.

I think I will suspend it this time. I have a trezor and then 1ltc+a compac for two prizes. But the work needed to keep track would be a lot. viabtc.com claims Network HashRate 7271 P for btc Network HashRate 615 P for bcc/bch The math comes to 482293 (Main Chain) 2017-08-28 01:52:08 481824 (Main Chain) 2017-08-24 01:57:37 so 469 blocks in 96 hours should be 576 blocks in 96 hours 469/576 = 81.4% which is a 18.6% drop so a big shift back to btc. but so far we know the shift can happen tomorrow and bcc could be at 3700p with btc at 4400p .. I will do a suspension of the contest for one adjustment as I want bitcoinwisdom to work again to help with picking

definitely makes the contest different.
before you could try to find trends and pick based on that.
before towards the end of a contest you could see who was closest and those folks could pick up a bit of excitement. now in one day a wild swing could end up with a pick at the other end of the range winning.
now its like throwing darts at a dart board.

There's some interesting analysis floating around regarding the effect EDA (Emergency Difficulty Adjustment) will have on BCH ongoing. The ability of miners to periodically accelerate block creation will result in premature reward halving. If things stay as is, there will be two BCH halvings by early 2019 (compared to one for Bitcoin in 2020). That means the BCH block reward could fall to 3.125 in a little over a year. While the miners force cycle the difficulty, BCH goes through periods of extremely slow blocks followed by periods of ridiculously fast blocks. How can there be any economic support for a blockchain that goes through regular drought cycles where transactions take hours to confirm? So if BCH has a dramatic reduction of block rewards and there's no significant increase in fees due to lack of economic support, the coin is basically dead. Miners will cycle it into oblivion until there's no value left to extract. In the meantime those large blocks go largely empty, with the only transactions used to transfer BCH from the miners to the bag holders who have been conned into believing in this failed experiment. I can't imagine that the BCH devs can leave things as-is. They're probably going to have to remove EDA. Assuming Bitmain allows it

Assuming Bitmain allows it And on the other end by dropping btc as low as 4200p vs 6600p for 2 to 3 days each jump. btc diff could be flat or neg for the next 5 or 6 jumps. if coin stays at 4000 plus and diff does -2 % 6 jumps in a row it is a big windfall for btc miners. not sure what is going to happen to btc's price if it is manipulated this way for the next 5 to 6 jumps. This would be a fun diff game if I had a good tracker service. I will suspend the game this jump. these are active trackers: https://data.bitcoinity.org/bitcoin/difficulty/5y?t=lhttp://bitcointicker.co/networkstats/https://pool.viabtc.com/these seem dead: https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficultyhttps://bitcoincharts.com/and manual can be done via https://blockchain.info/block 482365 8-28-2017 15:20:29 = current block 481824 8-24-2017 01:57:37 = start so 541 blocks in 4 days and 14 hours is about 110 hours x 6 = 660 541 vs 660 = 81.9 % or a 18.1 % drop which can move with ease by the hash shifting from btc to bcc

This really took me by surprise - I'm pretty sure even BCC/H did not foresee this kind of wild swing. If ever we were in doubt that miners (pools) could have this much control, this evidence should be quite definitive. This must force BCH devs into intervening sooner or later. Also, I wonder how long more price can hold if this pattern continues, though? There's got to be some nett effect of simple profit-taking on the market, at least for the medium term. And all this coming up to November, too. Just goes to show how much/little I really can predict about the network! Sorry to see the game suspended, although I don't necessarily think it being more difficult is a bad thing. Maybe some of us like finding that needle in the haystack

So the manual numbers are the only accurate way?
Block Height Time Relayed By 482667-------- 2017-08-30-- 15:47:29 = now 481824--------- 2017-08-24-- 01:57:37 = start
843 in 6 days and 14 hours.
948 would be 0% for 6 days and 14 hours.

yeah and you then do 843/948 = 88.9% or an 11.1% drop but lots of blocks left and https://pool.viabtc.com/has btc at Network HashRate 7812 P and BCC at Network HashRate 684 P these numbers reflect a big jump for btc since 6600 p = 0% so if we stay at these numbers the 11.1% current drop would be close to 0% mind you this is really good of you are mining. a 0% diff and a 4600 usd price is really nice. But tracking is hard as I would need to do manual 2 or 3 times a day. Not sure I want that work. I am still hoping to see bitcoinwisdom with a current number. I could start contest back up and not have to keep up records.

great for me, maybe my s7 can stay profitable for just a little while more perhaps if bitmain keeps cranking out miners as they have been hashrate won't keep dropping... I just hope the EDA is fixed so this sloshing in hashpower stops. Bad for both chains.

I am having trouble with exact block the new diff started at. https://bitcoincharts.com/this claims block 481824 was first block of new diff Blocks 481823 Total BTC 16.523M Difficulty 923233068449 Estimated 887736944047 in 1 blks Network total 7983858.406 Thash/s Blocks/hour 7.25 / 497 s if true 482085 (Main Chain) 2017-08-26 16:27:59 481824 (Main Chain) 2017-08-24 01:57:37 261 blocks made in 24 + 24 + 14.5 hours 261/60.5 = 4.314 blocks an hour vs 6 4.314/6 71.9 % or a 28.1% drop at the 261 block number so we know the hash is at bcc/bch and can shift back but a 28.1% drop in diff and price of coin over 4100 usd for btc would be a nice gain for miners 483840 (Main Chain) 2017-09-06 13:23:15 483840 (Main Chain) 2017-09-06 13:23:15 481824 (Main Chain) 2017-08-24 01:57:37 2016 blocks in 13 days and 11.5 hours. 1953 would be 0 % so a 3.22% jump so from -28% to + 3.22 % in about 11 days time we are watching very interesting manipulation of hash rates . oh bcc is getting a big pump today

Well if coins stay at 3800 and diff jumps 20% a huge swing will go to BCC/BCH at the moment 8233ph = BTC coin price is 3900 974ph = BCC/BCH coin price is 514 BTC diff is pushing a big diff jump BCH diff is flat 8233/974 = 8.45 8.45 x 514 = 4344 so when that big diff jumps for btc if btc is at 3900 and bcc/bch is at 514 a lot of hash will switch to BCC basically for every 3900 you earn with btc you would earn 4344 for bcc/bch this is really dangerous may make market nuts.

I would have thought the BCC "Emergency Difficulty Adjustment" (as I understand it) would have "expired" by now and it would be back to the normal 2016 block adjustment interval. Right now it appears that BCC still needs this "crutch"?
That seems like a poor situation long term, though maybe the "Emergency" only needs to last a while longer.
I can understand why BCC seemed desirable to Bitmain since it would supposedly increase the set of folks that would want an S9 (i.e. BCC-only miners).

I'm guessing they're keeping this "crutch" up only so that people will actually mine the coin. Without it, it seems not a whole lot of people would mine on that chain and thus they're likely keeping this in place just to incentivize people to mine there. Realistically this should've lasted at most a week but it seems like this emergency is extremely prolonged or there's miners involved/incompetent devs.

Realistically this should've lasted at most a week but it seems like this emergency is extremely prolonged or there's miners involved/incompetent devs. the problem will show when BTC jumps 20% if it does not rise to about 4350 BCC is the clear coin to mine viabtc.com has btc at 9580ph 3900 usd bcc/bch at 900ph 500 usd https://bitinfocharts.com/comparison/bitcoin-difficulty.html#3m diff is 922 diff is 119 the diff will jump to 1106 for btc 1106/119 9.30 to 1 so 500 x 9.30 = 4650 vs 922/119 7.75 to 1 so 500 x 7.75 = 3875 so right now bcc is 500 btc is 3900 current diff is 7.75 to 1 btc is slightly better to mine once diff jumps btc to bcc/bch needs to be 4605 to 500 to be better. to mine so we are going to see swings. viabtc offers auto switching: so a lot of hash may switch to bcc next jump maybe bcc prices crashes or maybe btc price rises

My S7 is still truckin along barely profitable right now... thinking of just throwing it in the miner museum with a few other old relics. I'm surprised these things have made it so far, two years of mining... shame Bitmain doesn't make anything nearly as reliable these days.
BTCC suspends trading and price plunged to $2500 temporarily on the exchange... with the difficulty rises combined with that I don't see this thing making it that far anymore sadly.

It's ONE company "GMO", and I believe their originally announced May 2018 timeframe was way optimistic. They seem to have toned the timeframe back to "have working silicon in 2018" which sounds like they are targeting TAPE-OUT by the end of 2018 and might be a viable target (that would put actual PRODUCTION into 1Q or 2Q of 2019).
They seem to have also had some bad timing on when to get involved, with the recent news out of China - unless China DOES in fact ban Bitcoin and it puts Bitmain/BW.COM/EBit and the other smaller Chinese miner makers out of business (Innosilicon will probably survive, they'll go back to being a custom design house like they were before they started doing Cryptocoin ASIC).

Many thanks for your insights. There is another one called DMM. https://www.coindesk.com/e-commerce-giant-dmm-to-launch-bitcoin-mining-venture/Apart from the bad timing aspects you mentioned, I still can't get my woolly head round the 7nm part - thought the limits were being reached around 10-12nm. Further, do you actually believe these announcements? Haven't we all heard more such announcements than were to be believed? As long as they stay up I will start it back up.
Great news. Sorry for off topic.

IBM has mentioned used HYBRID Germanium/Silicon wafers in their 7NM experimental development (this would end up on Global Foundries since GF ended up with the IBM fabs some years back when IBM decided to spin off that part of their business).
This should probably move over to the "Phil's 6'th thread" for any further discussion.

quick question, do you think you'll organize another difficulty contest in the near future ? Hashrate is still all over the place and shows no sign of....normalcy. Plus another fork is incoming in a month (maybe), now that will be interesting to watch. One thing is for sure, Bitmain and friends sure succeeded with their evil plans for higher profitability....10% bonus on bitcoin balances + mining profitability for sha256 is much, much higher than before.
