I do not think this is possible because it is a decentralized currency.

I think that's very unlikely to happen. Unless there will be an interruption in the power grid all over the world or the internet will be shut down. As long as we are in the digital age bitcoin will keep on functioning and keep on growing.

I was just wondering, what would it take for the Bitcoin Network to be shutdown completely?
To be able to finish Bitcoin you just need to remove internet and Bitcoin will no longer exist. But this will never happen because the internet is an important factor in sustaining this development. The promulgation of the ban limits Bitcoin's development without destroying it.

The blockchain is a living thing and it would take many years to bring the network down.

I don't think it's possible. Nobody can close bitcoin. If you want to kill bitcoin, you can only shut down the Internet, but I don't think that's possible. Now we can't live without the Internet. Even if all countries in the world ban bitcoin, it can still be traded on the Internet.

Yes, of course. The government may shut down Bitcoin’s presence (in the same country controlled by that government) so that it becomes “basically non-existent”. The government may simply say that the mining of the Bitcoin; and/or buying/selling of the Bitcoin for the national currency; or some other services; or even the promotion of the Bitcoin or products based upon it is illegal – and punishable by a fine and/or XY months or years in prison.

I can't think of anything to close bitcoin, which I don't think is possible. When all countries in the world ban bitcoin, bitcoin can still be traded on the Internet. Just as drugs are banned all over the world, people still buy and sell drugs.

I think  electricity and internet are logistics support that make it happen but some other factors like governments legal prohibition all over the world can also make it ineffective and useless. Anything becomes obsolete when it has no use.

I think not.
But it can be disappear because no more people using it anymore.
Since it decentralized and it's really free for anyone, i think no one can shut this down

I think in the distant future Bitcoin will disappear and replaced with more modern virtual currency and more gadgets. But it is a very distant future, maybe a few dozen years to come true because Bitcoin's value is still high and still receives a lot of attention from many investors.

Theoretically, it is possible, as long as the global power failure is enough, but this theory is very difficult to achieve, and it is almost impossible.

How will bitcoin shut down if there isn't even anyone that has full control over it? Bitcoin is a decentralized bitcoin currency and yes there might be times that someone can try to manipulate the price but that will only be to a certain extent. As long as there is a demand for bitcoin it will never cease to exist.
Without that central location to shut down, any meaningful crackdown would have to be a global endeavor. Even if a country was to somehow prevent bitcoin transactions from taking place within their borders, a simple VPN or Proxy system would let users operate internationally with little issue. In my personal it is posible to shutdown bitcoin but its not that easy.

Yeah, there is a possibility to shut down bitcoin but will takes a lot of time and will really require cooperation of all countries.

True. The internet is a central gateway to tap into the decentralized space. If that gateway is cut off, It'll be catastrophic. But that, however, isn't the purpose of bitcoin. Bitcoin main objective is to provide a decentralized infrastructure for peer to peer trustless payments. Soon we'll have a project which will focus on making a decentralized internet. One which won't be controlled or censored by ISPs (Internet service providers).

Why not banning internet node ?
South Korea can do that too. China has already done with Google stuff.

But as there are many out there who are supporting BTC ( luckly ) making their own machines as full nodes - the network can not be shut down - because they are still increasing.

And if you might have 50% +1 more power - IF YOU CAN REALLY HAVE ONE - they gonna find a solution for that and maybe switch or make a official statement with right blockchain where everyone should follow ( and not the corrupted one ).

So if you think to control the system, you'd better go and buy as many BTC as you find and just trash them - but you gonna have thousands of bilions to trash  Grin
