Nope. We honestly do not need dApps or smart contracts. All we need right now is a functional cryptocurrency with a strong community support and lots of recognition worldwide. I don't think that it is disputed that bitcoin is the #1 crypto.

You're right in some point but when people started to realize that not only Bitcoin can give them high investment profits but also other Altcoin does, they need to be educated that there are some promising altcoins that is worth more investments than Bitcoin. in my opinion, yes, ethereum have the possibility to outpace bitcoin.Just like bitcoin,  ethereum may explode in value,it has many capabilities compared to what bitcoin can do.  Ethereum has more chance to be the representative and the typical cryptocurrency of the society, because of its features like being used for building applications and the transactions can be done within just a minute, although Bitcoin is more valuable . I do trade with Ethereum for bitcoin and I can see that there's a lot of projects that are coming out with it's ERC 20. But bitcoin is the real and only one coin that will be supported in the future where everyone agrees to support only a certain coin. So I don't think that there's a potential that ETH will replace bitcoin.

It is possible but only for the very long perspective, maybe in 5-8 years!
